Stem to Stern

Memorial Day kicks off Boating Season at the Lake.

In anticipation of boating over the course of the long holiday weekend, I decorated the pontoon for fun~ from Stem to Stern ~ including a few stems in a mason jar.

A few pillows. . .

Some Red,White & Blue to dine with. . .

A beverage tub filled with drinks to keep us hydrated. . .

A breezy day~ with the wind whipping the flags :-)

Watermelon and Feta~the creamy, salty cheese is the perfect partner to the sweet, juicy melon~ in a flag formation with the addition of a side of blueberries :-)

I found this idea in Southern Living Magazine where Foods Editor, Scott Jones, fondly remembers the BBQ Sundae served at the Rebel Barn BBQ in Oxford, Mississippi.

An entrée, not dessert, the sundae layers pork, slaw, and baked beans, all covered in thick, sweet red sauce, or Lexington-Style sauce in our case. Perfect and portable for tailgating or picnicking~

My husband smokes a “Boston Butt”, “Picnic Roast”, “Pork Shoulder” or “Shoulder Blade Roast” ~ all names for shoulder cuts that make great pulled pork.

Our pork shoulder is brined for 24-48 hours, depending on the size & how organized we are :-) . . . in a mixture of ½ cup of pickling salt (which dissolves in cold water), 2 quarts of water and ¾ c of molasses.

Remove from the brine, blot with paper towels, brush on olive oil, and liberally add a dry rub/seasoning blend of salt, sugar, pepper, paprika, garlic powder etc.

Smoke at 225 degrees over lump charcoal with some soaked hickory or apple wood chips for about 1  1/2 hours per pound. Remove from smoker, wrap in foil and let stand an hour. It should fall apart, with all the fat melted away :-)

Wishing you a Safe & Happy Memorial Day~

Thank you for your visit, I’m joining:

Well, that was mouth-watering! I’m trying to imagine all of the layers in a jar – it’s really new to me.
Your pontoon is gorgeous – I can just imagine a sunny afternoon slipping away during nap time on the sofa.

Such a colourful display of red, white and blue. A wonderful spread of tantalising food. A lovely way to spend the day!

What a beautiful post! I love the flag with the watermelon and feta cheese! What an interesting combination but I’m sure it is delicious together. Thanks for the pork shoulder recipe, too. I’ve never brined one, but I bet it is fabulous.

Whoever gets to be guests on your pontoon boat for Memorial day sure is in for a treat! Everything looks so beautiful! Hope you enjoy the day.

Can I just say that your creativity blows me away? The watermelon, feta, and blueberry flag just sent me right over the edge. :)

Your photographs are so vivid. I just love looking through them. I am such a fan of red, white and blue so, of course, I just LOVE your beautiful design. The pillows and quilt make everything so homey. I also like how you have displayed the flatware on the plate. And flags everywhere…just fantastic!

I am visiting from Seasonal Sundays at the Tablescaper. As soon as I read the caption, I just knew it was your blog “Home is Where the Boat Is”. I don’t even know where to begin with this one, the flag fruit platter knocked me out. And then the meal in a jar, I can’t. I just can’t. I am your newest follower! Oh, to be a passenger on this boat! I’d even swab the decks. xo,

Mary, the watermelon “flag” not only looks delicious, it looks festive and so much easier to prepare than all those fancy “flag” desserts that become so ubiquitous this time of year. Another post fabulously well presented and beautifully done!

Likes others above me, the watermelon, feta and blueberries salad just gobsmacked me into a delighted aha moment…..this is what I will contribute to the 4th of July pot-luck get-together with our friends…. Perfect!
Your collection of accessories is amazing….and your taste for displaying them is impeckable. Thank you for another enjoyable read!

    Hi Mary,
Great Americana decor and accompanying vittles. Very cozy afternoon you have got going on there. Do you ever have any trouble enjoying your pontoon ride with all the motor boats on the lake. Do you find a cove and just “drop anchor”? Gee, sounds like I know how to do that! Hope your holiday was fabulous.

Now this is how I want to spend time on the lake. Your pontoon looks like a living room. And the watermelon and cheese idea looks delicious. I’m going to try that. Seriously envious of those polka dot utensils. Your cupboards offer the perfect details for every occasion. Hope your day was special.

Superbe! tut simplement superbe!

Wow! You really did it up right for Memorial Day! Your pontoon looks great. I did a Hawaian theme for my husbands birthday last year. When we started crusing a little too fast all the decorations started coming down. He wasn’t as impressed with all the decorating as I was!

  20. June 1, 2011 at 7:56 pm

Looks like someone has the red, white and blues. Wow!

Oh how I love this! The red, white, and blue just is so wonderful. I love the barbecue, slaw and beans in the jar. I love the red and white varied silverware. I love the watermelon, feta and blueberry flags. I love your whole boat decorated in red, white, and blue with the flags blowing in the wind. I have tried to do my deck in red, white, and blue but other colors keep on pushing their way in….:). If you didn’t already get this, I love it. Joni

  24. June 1, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Hi Mary! How festive that all looks! I enjoyed every bit of it! We had a picnic for our small beach community at our ballfield and I decked everything out in r w and b, and then forgot to take pics as I was so busy serving the crowd!
Love everything about this post, and yes, God bless America!

  25. June 1, 2011 at 9:37 pm

Well you have definitely got it going on!! This is quite wonderful, from the great napkins and place settings, the cozy seat, to the pulled pork in a jar, this is just great. I want to hang out with you next Memorial Day!! I will be using your watermelon, blueberries, and feta flag on the 4th. Such detail with everything, I truly enjoyed myself, and I will probably visit again to make sure I didn’t miss anything!!

This is just the cutest. I love the cokes in the glasses…and the flag watermelon. Really, so cute and patriotic!

  30. June 2, 2011 at 12:25 am

Beautifully conceived and executed! I have a set of giant tumblers that I intend to use with a bottle of something in them…just haven’t, yet. Do you have to make your friends go home? We had lake homes and boats for many years. We used to say that the only thing better than having a great boat was having a friend with a great boat! LOL. Thanks for sharing your wonderful design. (…catching up on my blog reading…I didnt even manage to get my “once a week” post up last week! But am glad that I was able to see your lovely post this week :o)

  44. June 4, 2011 at 6:09 pm

I’m intriqued. I’ve never spent any holiday on a boat…okay, I’ve never spent any time on a boat, but this looks so grand and fun!

Love the idea of the bbq in the jar. I do salads and desserts like that. It sounds delicious. And I need to try watermelon wih feta. It sounds interesting. My daughter has a Turkish boyfiend and he always puts feta on cantaloupe, too!

Thanks for a glorious stop this week!

    A+
