However you slice it, nothing says “summer” like a fresh-from-the-garden tomato. . .

I spied this recipe for Heirloom Tomato Pie on the cover of the July/August issue of Food Network Magazine. . . it looked so mouth-watering, I had to try it.

We were not disappointed! Definitely worth the effort.

The key to this pie for me is the cornmeal crust, and the addition of thyme and manchego cheese. . .

How luscious and opulent! Absolutely mouth watering photos and recipes!
Is that poke berries mixed into the tomato centerpiece?

    • July 24, 2011 at 5:35 pm

Yes :-) Some wild growing green grapes thrown in for fun too~

  2. July 24, 2011 at 5:34 pm

Oh, goodness me!!!! This is just so gorgeous. Wait….gorgeous doesn’t even really begin to describe it. It is magnificent!!!! I could throw about a gazillion adjectives at it and none would ever come close to describing how fantastic it really is! Those tomatoes in the centerpiece are just fabulous! I have a stone planter very similar to that one, and I may have to borrow your idea for filling it one of these days!!! I have had it forever, but it is just so heavy that I just don’t do a lot with it. Bravo!!! (P.S. – I had fried green tomatoes for lunch today!)

Beautiful post! Beautiful pictures and beautiful arrangement! Prettiest and most unique I’ve seen in a very long time. Love it all!!!!!!!!!

Your photos are fabulous, that tart, wish I had a slice right now. The centerpiece is gorgeous. Love the plates. xo,

Oh my gosh, You must live near me. I see you used wild muscadine and poke weed in your gorgeous centerpiece. I love the colors of the poke weed and how they work with the tomatoes. Beautiful!! I love using wild plants in an arrangement. The Heirloom Tomato pie and salad are gorgeous and I’m definitely trying both. You mentioned German Johnson tomatoes. Have you ever tried Mortgage Lifter? It’s a cross between German Johnson and ?? I forget what. That was one of the ones I planted this year.
Anyway, LOVE your post. It knocked my socks off. LOL

Yummy post, Mary and gorgeous also!

  8. July 24, 2011 at 6:37 pm

Wow! Unbelievably beautiful photographs once again. I feel as if I’m getting a sneak peak to a magazine spread or a feature in a decorating book. I love it.

Your tomato table is gorgeous, mouth-wateringly gorgeous. The centerpiece makes me smile – pokeweed. This is the only time I ever enjoyed looking at it and it does look great in your arrangement. The gold goblets really add a nice touch to the ‘scape.

I’m wondering why in the world we didn’t plant any tomatoes this year? I’m going to have to stop at the farmers’ market this week so I can try some of these wonderful recipes. Thank you for a fabulous post!

  16. July 24, 2011 at 10:49 pm

Awe inspiring! And that from a girl who doesn’t like tomatoes! Mary, your photos are exquisite. You had me wanting to try that tomato tart. Honestly! I do sooooooo enjoy each visit to your place. Your creative touch shines through in every detail. ~ Sarah

  17. July 24, 2011 at 11:08 pm

You are my favorite tablescaper! I love your tables. Everything is so pulled together and beautiful. I want to be you next time I set my table. :-)

  18. July 24, 2011 at 11:54 pm

Hmmmm, looks good. I planted two tomato vines and they are absolutely loaded with little tomatoes. If they all grow and ripen, I’ll have enough to stock the tomato bin at the grocery! I make a couple of tomato pies/tarts as appetizers and they are always a huge hit. Mary, I’m wondering when you are going to run out of amazing tables. You should put them together in a book, if not one for publication, then one to capture your creativity.

    Yummy & beautiful!

Those “poke berries” are very unique. I like the contrasting colors in them. Could you share more information about them? Curious.

Thank you for your lovely blog.

You are the master of the beautiful, luxurious, bountiful table and you outdid yourself with this one. A ripe tomato holds so much promise! I love how you allowed the texture of the wicker table to show through. Your efforts do NOT go unappreciated!

you can say tomato, but i will just say MINE! i have these same dishes and as we were leaving for sea dream last week i said its about time to do my tomato table, sooooooooooooooooo funny to see yours! and so dang beautiful as always! mine will be the ugly step sister version when i get around to it now… actually, tomatoes are not ripe here yet, we have had such a cold spring, and cool summer the produce is not flowing like it should be.

i adore your new table, i could sit for hours taking it all in there with the birdhouse, lake and boats, snacking on your fresh good, egad’s what a life… i so love your centerpiece, i love the warmth of harvest photos, it always touches me in a good spot, that the earth can be good, kind and plentiful.

    just gorgeous girl!

off to catch up some more with you, its always heaven here for me~

I get so excited to look at your table scapes. Not only are they lovely every week, but they really take me to my favorite vacation spot in New Hampshire. Thank you!

  32. July 27, 2011 at 11:01 pm

I, also, love tomatoes, and I can’t say enough good things about your beautiful table. You should think about publishing these pics, they are that good!! I had thought of doing a tomato ‘scape–I found some adorable plates at a thrift store–could I bring my stuff over to your place to set up? Seriously, I adore your blog. I have a vase like the one you used in your southwest design, only mine is blue. I think I saw another one in another post? Maybe a green one? Anyway, all your designs are so lovely!! Not to mention the food, yumm!!

This is delightful. Love your tomato tablescape. I live in an area that takes our tomatoes quite seriously! People come from quite a distance to get our “Hanover tomatoes”. Your pie looks wonderful — I made one a couple of weeks ago and was sooooo disappointed — it was a waste of good tomatoes!
