Banner Yet Wave Tablescape and a Giveaway!

Our Star-Spangled Banners are Waving

in anticipation of Independence Day!

I’m Proudly Hailing my love of Red, White & Blue

AND

Picnic Love~ in one portable toting package~

 this Vintage-Style Metal Picnic Basket!

I spied this plaid picnic basket at World Market before Memorial Day~  drawn to its retro-1950’s-style, like a child to a fireworks display :)

We packed it with jarred salads, chips, and Mini MoonPies for our Patriotic Picnic~ here.

I picked up an extra one to share and give away, (and packed  a few goodies inside :) in celebration of the Red, White, and Blue~ in time for you to enjoy it for your Fourth of July celebration!

My picnic basket is proudly serving as a centerpiece for my table~ protected and lined with plastic, filled with an assortment of plants that can be taken apart and planted permanently in pots on the patio~

Red Coleus, White Petunias, some stems of Blue Hydrangea (nestled in a plastic water bottle and concealed with moss), trailing Ivy, and apropos of the holiday~

Patriot Plantain Lily!

Napkins are folded forming pockets to hold flatware, sparklers and mini patriotic pinwheels~

Lanterns are flying flags and housing battery-operated candles, so the flags remain gallantly streaming with no risk of flag burning :)

Our Star- Spangled Menu will feature

Banner Yet Wave Burgers~

Mini burgers or sliders with a mini flag pick~

Mini in size~ since we pledge allegiance to small bites~ allowing us the freedom to snack in good conscience over the course of a long holiday :)

Rockets’ Red Glare Potato Salad~

Red, White, and Blue Potato Salad, using a trio of potatoes, with a recipe from Cooking Light.

This potato salad is flavorful and light~ liberated from mayonnaise! Oil & vinegar based instead, with chopped red onion and hard-cooked eggs, chives, parsley & dill.

Since my dill is blooming, our potato salad is garnished with a bursting fireworks display of flowering dill :)

I found a 24 oz. bag of Green Giant Klondike Medley petite potatoes, with all three colors at Super Target.

Blue (or purple) potatoes are starchier than the others and they tend to bleed, so you’ll want to cook them separately.

This potato salad can be served warm, room temperature or chilled~

You can find Cooking Light’s

Red, White, and Blue Potato Salad recipe here.

Broad Stripes Berries~

White Chocolate Dipped Strawberries, rolled in blue sugar and served in a Bright Stars cupcake liner :)

I inverted the stars cupcake liner which I nested inside a striped one for a stars & stripes salute!

Ready for the Giveaway?

For a chance to win this picnic basket, and a few goodies packed inside :) mention in a comment that you would like to have it for your own Patriotic or Plaid Picnic!

Subscribers/followers automatically get a second entry.

For an additional chance to win, leave another comment and tell me a favorite food/ beverage for your July 4th celebration :)

A winner will be chosen June 25th!

The giveaway is now closed.

This basket is just fabulous. :) Of course, I would love to have it for my 4th of July party. And, yes, even though I live in Germany, I usually have a small 4th of July party. :) Thanks for the chance — and even for the extra chance as follower (and also subscriber).

    Greetings from Munich,
    Birgit

  3. June 11, 2012 at 6:15 am

A burger is something I definitely want to have on 4th of July. Burgers aren’t common around here (gasp!), so, yes, they are special food for me. Hard to believe, huh? Once I made a blue-red-white cake in honor of the occasion. Maybe I will get around to make another one this year, if strawberries and blueberries are still sold in the beginning of July. :)

    Happy Independence Day,
    Birgit

  4. June 11, 2012 at 6:31 am

Oh would I ever love to have it. Patriotic would be so delightful. Love your patriotic tablescape. The flags in the little burgers is such a cute idea! Everything is so beautiful. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

Cute table Mary, lovin’ your great runner! The basket is adorable, I’d like shish-ka-bobs for the 4th:@)

  8. June 11, 2012 at 7:27 am

What an amazing giveaway, Mary! Love your basket and table.

A favorite 4th of July food would be burgers, with the usual sides and homemade ice cream.

The foods I remember best for childhood Independence Day celebrations, are fried chicken and watermelon. Nowadays, we have watermelon year round, but back in the 1950’s,here in Missouri, we enjoyed our first watermelon of Summer on the 4th of July.

  9. June 11, 2012 at 7:35 am

Oops, I forgot to separate the food.:-) The favorites still stand as I mentioned in the first comment.

I am adding another favorite; an iced down wash tub, filled with bottles of soda and the above mentioned watermelon.

Hope this counts as another chance to win that wonderful basket.

It would be so special to take snacks to the parade and then later to take on a picnic this year and years to come. Can’t wait to see your next post! HAPPY MONDAY TO YOU!!!

  11. June 11, 2012 at 8:06 am

Mary, I just adore that red, white, and blue metal picnic basket, so I’d love a chance to win it. As I have said before, you are just amazing with your tablescapes. From the little flag picks in the burgers to the decorated strawberries, every detail supports your theme. Just beautiful!

  12. June 11, 2012 at 8:09 am

We usually barbeque ribs on the 4th, and corn on the cob is usually on the menu. And I usually make a red, white, and blue trifle. May have to steal your strawberry idea this year, though!

  13. June 11, 2012 at 8:25 am

Hi Mary, I would love to win that fabulous tin basket!!!! I fell in love with it on your last post and I can imagine so many ways and places to use it! Hi again Mary! Can’t miss another chance to win your wonderful basket, so I’ll tell you what we are having for our Independence Day cookout. Lamb burgers–ground lamb with cumin and lots of mint and minced garlic–I let it sit for about 8 hours to blend flavors–put on grill–serve on toasted buns with chopped tomatoes, add some couscous salad with grapes and pignolia nuts, and Blueberry Boy Bait or Puzzle Pie for dessert! Iced Tea and Lemonade. Lots of sparklers and family fun too. Linda

  28. June 11, 2012 at 10:01 am

Love your table and menu. Can you watch fireworks on the water there?
I remember my mom buying sparklers for July 4 th! I don’t think we can buy them here anymore.
Of course I would love a chance at your give away! Thank you, and thanks for linking to Let’s Dish!

  29. June 11, 2012 at 10:08 am

Let’s see, July 4 th food. The usual burgers and dogs, baked beans cooked all night, salads and Long Island clam chowder.
Growing up I remember the men eating clams on the half shell. Someone would always dig a bushel in the morning and get them icy cold. A spoon full of spicy cocktail sauce and down the hatch!
I chop them and make baked clams, but I can’t eat them raw.

I would love to win that fabulous basket! As someone who is quite “design challenged”, it would be a real treat to have something so put-together, so stylish, and so inviting. What a gift to be able to pull together so many different elements (using reasonably priced items), spin some of your special magic and then have something so wonderful emerge.

    Marilyn (in Dallas)

  31. June 11, 2012 at 10:33 am

Oh! I am so hoping my # comes up, I would LOVE to have this wonderful basket. What a nice giveaway!!! Of course I am a follower. Your table is a patriotic pleasure!!!! You never miss a detail. I’ll leave another comment for another chance:):) XO, Pinky

  32. June 11, 2012 at 10:34 am

ONE of my favorite fourth of July foods is deviled eggs. Of course I make them all summer but we love them at any picnic our outdoor meal. Also a diced summer slaw has become another favorite. I should do a post on it. XO, Pinky

  33. Marilyn
    June 11, 2012 at 10:42 am

I love to serve all the traditional 4th of July food ( hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, icy cold watermelon etc.) but also love to grill fresh fruits and vegetables. Fresh peaches are great. Just cut in half, remove the pit, and grill.

    Marilyn (in Dallas)

  34. June 11, 2012 at 10:54 am

Mary you have such a great talent for taking a few things and making them look spectacular. I loved your table. Where did you get those napkins, they are perfect! I love hamburgers and hot dogs with potato salad on the 4th. We’ve had that menu since I was a kid and even though I’m tempted by bbq chicken or steaks, it just wouldn’t be 4th of July without hamburgers and hot dogs!!!

  35. Betty
    June 11, 2012 at 11:13 am

Thank you for sharing your wonderful gift for artful table settings. I would really enjoy a picnic basket like the one you used for your 4th of July display. Maybe I’ll be lucky and win it.

I agree that there must be watermelon for any July 4th celebration!

  37. June 11, 2012 at 11:31 am

Mary, you have me wanting to grill burgers and make salad. Flag Day is my 50th birthday and I have decided to be very grateful for all my blessings. The red, white, and blue picnik basket wouldd be a welcome addition here. hugs, olive

    June 11, 2012 at 1:09 pm

Mary, I love the red, white and blue strawberries. I just went strawberry picking this morning, and had already planning on dipping several in chocolate. I might have to try some of these cuties :-) We enjoyed a July 4th menu over the weekend at the lake since my entire family can’t all be together for the true Fourth celebration. I made the best baked beans ever. Of course, I would love, love to win the basket. Thanks :-)

  39. June 11, 2012 at 2:01 pm

Fabulous post. I love to decorate with a patriotic theme from Memorial Day to 4th of July and you have provided lots of ideas. The adorable picnic basket would add just the right touch to my decorating. Thank you.

  40. June 11, 2012 at 2:04 pm

Favorite foods for the 4th of July are sliders and your delicious feta, blueberry and watermelon flag salad. Love it!

What exciting strawberries. I love it all. :) Jenny

  42. June 11, 2012 at 2:41 pm

Oh, yes, Mary! I’d LOVE to win this awesome giveaway! Christmas and the patriotic holidays are my favorites! That picnic basket it wonderful–perfect for my tables :). Your table/pictures/post are all beautiful, as always. Thanks for throwing my hat in the mix! ~Zuni (aka Atalove by WordPress…sorry for the confusion).

  43. June 11, 2012 at 2:43 pm

Hi, Mary. Zuni/Atalove here…:) Over the last few years Amish broasted chicken (fried in a pressure cooker) has become our favorite meal for the 4th. We’re lucky to have a wonderful IGA in a small nearby town that prepares it to order, so we pick up tons of it and freeze what we don’t consume over the holiday. With baked beans, potato salad and other must-haves, it’s a vaforite meal.

  44. June 11, 2012 at 3:15 pm

You do the most magnificent patriotic tables!!! You always come up with the most creative and inspiring tables. As I’ve mentioned before, the sparklers bring back wonderful memories of my childhood. My best friend(since we were 4 years old, and are still best friends but live on different coasts)always lit sparklers on the 4th of July. My dad would do the honors of lighting and soon the entire neighborhood had sparklers going up and down the block with fireworks in the sky. Your picnic basket is charming and what a fabulous idea to have mini-burgers. Wow, your table is fantastic and have me in the mood for a very festive Fourth of July celebration.

    June 11, 2012 at 3:37 pm

Love your wonderful tablescapes. You have such talent and I appreciate you sharing all of your wonderful ideas. Would love the picnic basket as a focal point of our 4th of July picnic!

    June 11, 2012 at 4:21 pm

Fourth of July is my favorite holiday to celebrate! I love the food, the family and friends – and the parade! And you have given me such inspiration for my table setting – I would love to win the metal basket! How cute is that!! We always have Italian sausages, burgers and hot dogs. Of course you also have to serve potato salad, baked beans, and watermelon.

  47. June 11, 2012 at 4:57 pm

Our family hosts an annual 4th of July bbq in our backyard. We serve hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, baked beans, etc. This year I plan on making banana pudding and serving it in the little mason jars. I love all of your tablescapes but I must say that your patriotic posts are my favorite. This past Monday I drove into the city with every intention of going to the World Market based upon your recommendation, not only for the metal basket but also the parchment paper. I think the metal basket would be a great centerpiece for the buffet table! Blessings, Tammy

OMG! I have lusted for that tin picnic basket since I saw it on your Memorial Day post!!I spent an hour searching the web for one of my own, no luck. And, one of the reasons, (one of many) that I love your Blog so much is that I am crazy for the color combo of red, white and blue. And one more reason is I spend 4th of July every year on my sister’s boat on Lake Winnipesaukee in NH and I bring a Basket for her filled with red, white and blue goodies. So, I sure hope I win this great give away, thanks SO much for the chance, very nice of you!!-Lee

  50. June 11, 2012 at 7:16 pm

WOW I love this! So creative and charming. Perfect table for Independence Day celebrations (including the burgers :-)

  51. June 11, 2012 at 7:29 pm

We love and share potluck picnics with friends and I would be so proud to carry my contribution in such a patriotic metal picnic basket!

I hope the dice roll with my lucky number!

  52. June 11, 2012 at 7:31 pm

I don’t know why but my favorite summer picnic dish to take anywhere is my own baked beans…I also love a good potato salad, but the baked beans is the first choice!

  53. Irene
    June 11, 2012 at 8:05 pm

My fav 4th of July food is the American hot dog with all the trimmings. Gotta have potato salad, baked beans and brownies, too!

  54. June 11, 2012 at 9:38 pm

I am glad to see you getting a jump on the 4th of July holiday! It’s always such a huge celebration, and you have lots of fabulous ideas here! I saw that basket at World Market last week and loved it! Of course, I would love to have it!!!! Who wouldn’t?!??!?!?! I keep looking at the strawberries and wondering abouat the immense amount of patience that HAD to have gone into doing those. They look so neat, especially the manner in which you have them displayed!!!!! Everything set here is just right for a boom bang 4th!!!

  55. Kathy Moody
    June 12, 2012 at 2:15 am

Oh my, what an awesome giveaway and the pictures are beautiful!! We always celebrate the Fourth at some friends house who live on the lake. From their house we can see our annual city fireworks display. Such a great time each year. Thanks for the great giveaway!

  56. June 12, 2012 at 2:16 am

I would love the chance to win your amazing basket full of goodies! How fun it would be to take to the firework show and have a picnic. :o) I like to eat barbecued burgers on the 4th, but make them with ground turkey instead of beef. Delicious! I recently discovered your blog and have been in awe of your amazing tablescapes and beautiful photos. Thanks for the chance to win!!!

  57. Kathy Moody
    June 12, 2012 at 2:17 am

For my second entry, we always have hamburgers. I am always required to bring my spinach dip and cream cheese pound cake. That sounds so good at this moment. LOL :)

  58. Sandra Farrington
    June 12, 2012 at 7:48 am

I love to see your displays and table settings. We have very similar taste, sas I have many of the Target and Pottery Barn pieces that you use on your website. However, I do not have a World Market store located close to my home. I would love to have the picnic basket give away that you offering. It would go perfectly with the items that I already have. I just purchased blue and white swirl enamelware from Horchow and I cannot wait to use them for our 4th of July celebration dinner.

  59. Sandra Farrington
    June 12, 2012 at 7:52 am

My favorite menu for a patriotic 4th dinner would include fried chicken with all the trimmings and the drink of the day would be a white wine spritzer embelished with fresh blue berries and fresh strawberries.

  60. June 12, 2012 at 9:09 am

This is totally unreal. Love that picnic basket. You are amazing, everything is perfect. Thanks tons for joining TTT. Hugs, marty

  61. June 12, 2012 at 12:51 pm

Would I like to have it? Are you kidding? I love it and the whole post. I want to try that potato salad that’s liberated from the mayo, and those dipped strawberries are adorable. We’re fixing finger foods for a patriotic themed celebration later in the month, and I need to show that to my mom. VERY cute!

  62. June 12, 2012 at 2:03 pm

awesome pictures! Would love my own Patriotic picnic but it won’t be as amazing as yours!

  63. Linda Kemp
    June 12, 2012 at 4:10 pm

The patriotic picnic basket is absolutely beautiful and the entire display tugs at my heart. I would love to have that as a centerpiece for my holiday table. We always read the preamble to the Declaration of Independence. My son-in-law who is with the U.S. Embassy in Denmark usually reads it but they won’t be here this year :-( They will be home for three weeks beginning July 11th. We will need to celebe twice.

  64. Linda Kemp
    June 12, 2012 at 4:17 pm

I forgot the food. We always have husband’s famous barbequed chicken, corn on the cob, potato salad, cole slaw, and Katherine Hepburn brownies with raspberry sauce. I may make watermelon salad this year. I think those strawberries are adorable.

  65. June 12, 2012 at 5:02 pm

It’s so pretty, Mary! It took a while to take it all in. I love the red, white and blue picnic basket filled with seasonal flowers in patriotic colors, flags and cute pinwheel. The runner caught my eye and the tasteful napkins. I would like to buy both of those things for my 4th of July table if I won the basket. If not I need to buy one of those too.

I am definitely a subscriber and enjoy all your posts so much.

  66. June 12, 2012 at 5:11 pm

I am so hungry looking at the yummy burgers, potato salad and cutely decorated strawberries! The little flags in the burgers make the meal so festive. We do different things but barbequed ribs, low country boil and burgers are favorite foods at our house for the fourth. Homemade ice cream is also a favorite. I really like your recipe for the potato salad without mayo and plan to try it soon. The lantern with flags adds to your table.

  67. June 12, 2012 at 5:55 pm

What a beautiful post; I’m so glad I found your blog! Beautiful photos, and so inspirational!

  68. June 12, 2012 at 10:08 pm

Everything, as usual, is just perfect. Clearly I don’t spend nearly enough time shopping as I missed out on that darling plaid basket at World Market and can’t believe you found those goblets at the Dollar Tree. The burgers look tasty, but you really wowed me with the strawberries — I love the white chocolate and blue sugar. I have lots of summer entertaining to do, so I’d love that basket! Thanks again for an inspiring post.

  69. June 12, 2012 at 10:09 pm

Pork steaks — a St. Louis thing — is always a Fourth of July favorite around here.

If I had that basket, does that mean I’d be just like you? I’d love to have you sprinkle some of your magic touches at my table, no matter what the occasion.

  73. June 13, 2012 at 8:22 pm

Yes, yes, yes, I’d love to win the basket!! I would certainly use it for my very own patriotic picnic. Now, on to your post…what do I love most…hmmm, the berries, so adorable, the flower-filled basket, the red, white and blue potato salad WITH dill fire works, the flag-clad sliders…it’s all spectacular!!!

  74. June 13, 2012 at 8:24 pm

My favorite dessert to make for the 4th is a fruit pizza with the fruit shaped as a star.

  75. June 13, 2012 at 8:40 pm

Love love love!! Your attention to details is what makes it stand out. Especially love the folded Napkins with the sparklers and pinwheels! Too cute!

  76. June 13, 2012 at 9:05 pm

Mary, Visiting you is like opening my favorite magazine! Old Glory never looked better! I love your napkin fold and all the goodies you tucked inside. Would you consider joining me for TUTORIALS TIPS AND TIDBITS next Wednesday night at 8:00 pm. with this fun post. You have some great tips in here!
You picture of the potato salad is delicious!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this! I would love to have this patriotic basket to share with my family and friends. The 4th of July celebration is a big deal in my family as we have many military family members (retired and active duty). I love to decorate with red, white and blue and your posts show such amazing designs….they are just charming! I love the fact that you list where items can be bought. You are definitely a STAR and I love your blog!

I love the traditional food for the 4th of July….burgers, baked beans, potato salad, slaw, etc. But my favorite part is the dessert! I love patriotic looking desserts (the chocolate covered cherries, cake with the blue berries, strawberries, and whipped cream to make a flag design). Not only are these desserts beautiful and fun to make but they are delicious!! :)

  79. June 13, 2012 at 9:33 pm

Oh my, this is absolutely delightful. I was in love with the basket way before I realized you were offering it as a give away. Thanks for the opportunity. Cherry Kay

  80. June 13, 2012 at 9:35 pm

I’m a happy follower. My favorite 4th of July goodie would have to be fresh peaches in many forms…cobbler & homemade peach ice cream come to mind immediately. Cherry Kay

Mary, you know I’m smiling as I scroll down through this magical post. I do love patriotic colors. The picnic basket is adorable, and I rushed to WM as soon as I saw it in your Memorial Day post. So I already have one of these beauties. My thought was to use it as a centerpiece as you’ve done. It’s perfect for that! All the details are fun. I need to find some sparklers to add to my 4th of July stash. LOL
Thanks for sharing another fantastic table. I’ve already been a recipient of one of your generous give aways, so will cheer on the others. Some one in Blogland is going to be very happy! My favorite 4th of July food ~ fresh Texas peaches and ice cream.

My mom’s birthday was July 4th, and we ALWAYS planned a picnic for her birthday, always had watermelon, and bing cherries for a special treat,
and ended the day, watching fireworks somewhere. Your giveaway
just touched my heart with memories of those years. It would be fun to
win your picnic basket full of goodies, to continue the tradition in a special way. And continue on with the next generation. Thank you for this
    opportunity!!

I am passionate about our country, though it is not perfect, it is still the best place to live. I have a vintage plaid hamper like yours but in beautiful fall colors. I would sure love to have this one also to use in my 4th of July decorating. I know what ever you pack in it will be great.

I would love to celebrate with this red, white and blue picnic basket. It would just be the perfect thing to pack sandwiches and chips for an afternoon boat ride. I’m a tea drinker, and on a hot day like July 4th, it’s the perfect drink to quench the thirst. I love all your posts – really love seeing the boat decorated so beautifully the way you do.

LOVE IT! Winning this red, white and blue pinic basket would like Christmas in July! We love to celebrate the 4th of July with good food, friends and fun. Our menu will be beef & chicken kabobs…mini burger sliders…grilled corn on the cob with flavored butters, a variety of salads..mixed with good friends..laughs..and fun! Love your blog I troll it daily! :) Happy Fourth to you and your family!

  88. June 14, 2012 at 9:39 am

The RW&B basket reminds me of a plaid one my folks had. Wax paper wrapped sandwiches were laid so carefully inside with 2 bottles of milk. My mom would take it with us on a car outing. Love 4th of July. We’d have SWEET TEA to drink for sure. Maybe some die hard Pepsi on hand as well. Love your blog. Fun stuff. – Jan

I am mad for the tin picnic baskets starting with my MIL’s 50s faux bois basket. I swooned when I saw your plaid find! Our daughter and 3 grandpeeps will arrive back home from their recent move to Germany on the first of July. We are making grand preparations for a Red White and Blue welcome. Would this not make a fantastic addition to our festivities!

And for my final entry. My favorite 4th of July menu is good hamburger fresh off the grill. But no cheese (have to watch the calories, lol). Lots of onions, tomatoes, lettuce and my new favorite mustard with horseradish. Yum. Can’t forget dill pickle spear on the side. And of course potato salad and baked beans. Oh, and corn on the cob. Now I am making myself hungry. Can’t wait until the 4th. Thanks for hosting such a great giveaway. I would love to win the basket. I’m now going to be obsessed with getting one.

Oh, oh, oh! Love all the grand ole flag stuff in your picnic! Americana is truly making its come back this year. I have been putting together a Red, White and Blue themed table on my porch (Seats 12!) for this summer. I hope to have a huge party for the 4th! That divine picnic basket in your giveaway would be holding garlic cheese biscuits on my table! Love your blog….I will be a follower now!

  111. June 15, 2012 at 3:19 pm

I would love to win this basket! Hopefully it would look just as stunning with my items as well! I don’t love blueberries, so I am choosing white chocolate dipped pretzel sticks (with red, white and blue sprinkles!) as my favorite food. If you don’t love blueberries or black berries you have to settle for blue frosting! I also love hot dogs and corn on the cob for the holiday.

I, too, have a lake blog. May I use your photo of the flag, and lunch box with your banner “Home is where the boat is?” Actually I will post a link from my blog to yours, so my followers can subscribe to yours, too!

  143. June 19, 2012 at 8:28 am

What a beautiful picnic basket! It would definitely complement my array of Fourth of July table accessories that I just love to get out every year and use for my picnic celebration! It would look perfect sitting on my red, white and blue plaid tablecloth. :) My husband is so tired of me storing all my themed table ware, but it just makes things so festive. All tradition at our celebration: burgers, dogs, and a potato salad recipe that my late mother-in-law shared with me many years ago and admitted that it tasted just like hers when I made it! The family just wouldn’t have it any other way.Couldn’t ask for a better compliment.

Just landed upon your blog-love your ideas. I grew up hearing the phrase “go to the store and get a dope and a moon pie”….of course the dope was an RC cola…..I hope I win, but if not thanks for all the ideas and photos!

I hadn’t thought of moon pies and RC cola in a long time – it brought back fond memories of hot summer afternoons. Would love to win your basket and give it to my parents – especially mom – she loves moon pies!

Love the moon pie story! Being cornbread fed above the Mason/Dixon, vacations were always down home. PawPa would always buy us kids a box of moonpies for the trip home. One time, we forgot them. He called the town sheriff to pull Daddy over until he could catch up with us! Thanks for the memories!

Your posts are always so inspiring! I’m only going to a 4th of July celebration this year instead of hosting one, so a basket for traveling in style would be wonderful!
Love your blog. Thank you for sharing your talents.
