Tropic of Tommy Bahama

The closest I’m getting to a tropical island

is sipping Fiji Island Water~

So for Kathleen’s Let’s Dish Destination Challenge, I’m heading to the Tropic of Tommy Bahama. . .

In a world of schedules, to-do lists,

and the lost art of relaxing,

I’m digging my toes in the virtual sand

and idyllic island life of Tommy Bahama~

The Tommy Bahama® philosophy:

“Tommy Bahama can help you escape

the troubles of the modern world in favor

of a place that’s relaxed and worry free

. . .where life is one long weekend.”

“There is a warm westerly breeze rustling the palms, the lulling roar of crashing waves – it’s a celebration of island living, courtesy of Tony Margolis, Bob Emfield and Lucio Dalla Gasperina. In 1992, the fictional Tommy Bahama character became the inspiration behind the experience of traveling to exotic locales where the food is good, the beaches are hot and the mood is relaxed.”

To get yourself in the one-long-weekend-mindset,

mix yourself a cocktail and

savor the tropics ~wherever you may be~

sipping on a Cayman Cooler, Kentucky Mai Tai,

or Bronx Bomber™.

You can find Island-Time Cocktail

recipes from Tommy Bahama, here.

In celebration of island living,

I set a table to evoke a

westerly breeze rustling the palms~

With my passport to paradise, I’m visiting

Tropic of Tommy Bahama ports of call~

Cape Relax, Catch A Lot Island, and Tropic of Couch Potato. . .

I pulled out my Hula Leaf placemats~

according to Tommy,

Life is better when you know how to hula!

In the spirit of making life one long weekend,

you can learn about the ancient art of hula, here.

A bag of crushed shells from Michaels

creates a shell-dotted reef at the table~

And a compass wine bottle stopper from Pottery Barn

functions as a hot & sunny weather finder that

will keep us on course to our destination~

Where we can enjoy the Ocean’s Song~

Island-Time recipes can be found here,

to help with your weekend luau

or to create an island-inspired meal,

courtesy Tommy Bahama.

Shrimp Avalon, found under the appetizers,

could easily be a summer evening meal

with a generous serving of shrimp and crab,

garnished with avocado!

Mixed and served with a veggie blend

of cucumber, tomato, onion and cilantro.

And served up with a brown sugar palm tree,

created with a sand toy from Dollar Tree~

You can find a printable recipe

for Shrimp Avalon, here.

This setting just says “fun” Mary! Love it all, the placemats, chargers even the flatware is just too cute! I’d love to kick back and enjoy one of Tommy’s tiki drinks with you and just watch the boats go by:@)

This is the most upscale and very Tommy Bahama beach table I have ever seen! Oh my, this might be one of my favorite… but then everything you do is my favorite!
I love the way you style crushed shells to be a work of art!
I was in Barbados a couple of years ago and visited the Tommy Bahama rum distillery… I could not get off the bus for the next stop! Nothing like drinking rum at 10:00 in the am! Barbados air smells like sugar!

  3. July 18, 2012 at 7:00 am

You’ve done it again… the clever award!!!! So much FUN!!! Not to mention the recipes and DRINKS! :D :D :D

What a creative transformation. Love how you brought Tommy Bahama to the Lake! The crushed shells were ingenious, they really help capture the feel.

Hi Mary, it is very hot here on the cape and I think I need one of those cooling rum drinks! I have always wanted to do the hula so I checked out the video and I think that’s on the schedule for this evening when it cools off a bit! Unfortunately my hubby had to rush back to NYC last night because some deal just had to happen–some change in the winds or something–but at least he was wearing his old Tommy Bahama shirt so I hope that will help him relax! Your table is beautiful. I think I have some dishes with another design that are part of that set and I really like them. The shrimp and crab dish will definitely go on our menu here!!! Send me your address so I can pop your postcard in the mail and try to stay cool! Looks like you have the right setting! Linda

The folks at Tommy Bahama couldn’t have done it better themselves, Mary! This is fabulously fabulous fabulosity!!!!! The reef and the brown sugar palm tree are just incredibly creative!!! I wouldn’t mind taking a little trip to the tropic of TB if this is what’s waiting for me!

  10. July 18, 2012 at 11:01 am

Love everything about this table. I would sit down, enjoy the drinks, food and wine and never want to leave! Your attention to detail never fails to amaze me. I’m more relaxed just looking at this!

  11. July 18, 2012 at 12:31 pm

Darn, I wanted to see where the animal print chargers came from and they were a gift:( POO! I LOOOVE this table. You are so darn creative, every post is a delight to me. And your commentary can’t be beat either. I was just seeing the beach on the news and wishing I was there. Thanks for transporting me!!!! Have a fabulous weekend. I am trying some of these recipes. XO, Pinky

Oh, take me away! The ocean breezes are calling. Mary, your imagination is such fun. This table is full of island charm. I smiled all the way through this clever post. Shrimp Avalon looks delicious. I’ve decide that’s what we are having for dinner. ;-)

Your tablescape is gorgeous and I love all things Jimmy Buffett! This ranks right up there with him!! That shrimp looks divine!!! Hope your summer is going well Mary!! xo Jeanne

  14. July 18, 2012 at 2:21 pm

What a fun trip! Love the whole table…Please wrap it up and send post-haste!

My son was hoping to host a “Castaway” beach party this summer to celebrate his 20th anniversary of his arrival to this island, but health issues have sort of put a hold on that…but this theme would be perfect to use as a backdrop.

    Another inspired hit, Mary!

  15. July 18, 2012 at 6:02 pm

You slay me with the “tropic of Couch Potato” Mary. Your imagination is as big as the whole wide world me thinks…bigger perhaps.

  16. July 18, 2012 at 7:12 pm

Wow, this is a spectacular tropical table! Every detail is perfect!

  17. July 18, 2012 at 7:51 pm

Those map plates are wonderful! This is a perfect table….

  18. July 18, 2012 at 7:57 pm

Perfect as always! Just drooling over the Shrimp Avalon! Everything is PERFECT!

  19. July 18, 2012 at 8:43 pm

Perfection again, Mary! Wow, I love those hula placemats and those animal print chargers. I also love the crushed shells forming the reef and the brown sugar palm tree (you’re having too much fun playing in the sand!!). I want a taste of the Shrimp Avalon right now.

  20. July 18, 2012 at 8:49 pm

Mary, I want to book a Tommy Bahama weekend at your home! The Hula Leaf Placemats are so tropical! Thanks for the recipe.

  24. July 19, 2012 at 8:49 am

Another of your fabulous posts that makes me gasp. I love everything about this table. The plates really send me, as I’m a big fan of anything with a travel or coastal themed. The brown sugar/sand things are sensational and I’m heading to Dollar Tree to see if I can find any sand toys, although in a landlocked State like Missouri, I’m not sure this is possible.

  25. July 19, 2012 at 8:53 am

Mary, you asked me about propogating hydrangeas. I have never tried since I have 10 bushes BUT I have seen instructions on Pinterest. All of my bushes came out of the TRASH!!! When I was working at a florist, she would throw them away when they started looking bad and she didn’t mind if I took them. We used ALOT of them 2 years ago for in the centerpieces for our daughter’s wedding. Check Pinterest and/or google it. XO, Pinky

  26. July 19, 2012 at 9:35 am

I never knew Tommy was such a philosopher! He and you, really know how to do it up grandly! Crushed shells reef! Amazing!
You certainly took us to a clearly defined and well executed destination! Excellent presentation!
Thanks so much for linking to Let’s Dish. Looks like it was too hot for many to do the challenge! I am glad you did!

  27. July 19, 2012 at 9:36 am

Mary, I propogated a lot of hydrangeas. email me!

  28. July 19, 2012 at 9:40 am

Beautiful, fun and very inviting! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  29. July 19, 2012 at 10:23 am

My mom and I were just remarking yesterday that you are, hands’s down, the most gifted tablescaper that we “party” with! Every week, you just amaze me with the masterpieces you come up with. This week, you had me at the placemats and just got better with each layer.

Really, Mary, no false praise: You’ve got a gift!

  30. July 19, 2012 at 10:52 am

Love your table reef. In fact, everything about your blog is inspiring and beautiful and tasty. Through your details in your decorating I can tell you absolutely love making beautiful environments, and cozy at the same time. Speaking of art of relaxing, I’ve attached my blog address. I did a little post on “art of sitting”. Linda http://lindasescape.blogspot.com/2011/08/art-of-sitting.html

  31. July 19, 2012 at 12:45 pm

This post was a complete delight from beginning to end! Now I will defintely be looking for Tommy Bahama. My first roommate in college was from Fiji, and she was such a sweetie. Thank you for sharing all of this with us–I feel like I was swept away on a fabulous vacation for a few minutes, and I needed that!

  32. July 19, 2012 at 3:46 pm

Goodness Mary, I’ve never been one for the tropical island thing, but I’m now re-thinking. Wow! This creation is so cool! I think my favorite thing is the seashell reef and the brown sugar “sand” palm trees. You are seriously talented. I also love the hula place mats; I’ve never seen anything like them. I almost hate to mention this since everyone is probably sick of “Pirates of the Caribbean” but when I saw this table I couldn’t help thinking, “Heave Ho, me maties, yo ho.”

The shrimp and crab looks so juicy and succulent, Mary. Yum. I am so missing our beach trip last summer. Thanks for sharing your wonderful ideas and have a great weekend.

Mary, you and Tommy Bahama have whisked me away. with your imagination and creativity, as always. Great seashell reef and what fun hula leaf place mats. I’m chillin’ out and hoping someone will bring me another Cayman Cooler.
Thanks for a fabulous trip to the islands.

  38. July 20, 2012 at 12:55 pm

Gorgeous table and food, Mary! The shell decorations and placemats are gorgeous! After the sad news of this morning I need a place “to get away from it all” Maybe a Tommy Bahama would help?!

I am an island girl, and this table is one of the most wonderful I’ve seen. When I lived in Fiji, we were near the hotels on Viti Levu in Nadi. Our friends would often call to see if they could shower their kids in our garden hose, or fill jugs of water from our house because our water was never turned off (being on the water main going to hotels) But a common occurence in Fiji in 1996 was to have the water turned off unannounced due to drought. One could be in the shower with soap in her hair, or entertaining guests. I can never buy the bottled water bearing the name of that sometimes dry island nation. My daughter’s friend who lives in Fiji says the American owners of the company give back to the people. But it’s not water.

I always look at your blog and enjoy it, but often do not comment but today…girl, you outdid yourself! Everything you do is amazing but those sugar palm trees are over the top. What a fantastic setting. Peggy from PA
