Flower Fix

What’s a girl to do when she needs a Flower Fix,

with temps in the triple digits

and there is nothing to

be had at the garden center until fall?

When it’s much too hot to garden~

and pots of annuals, watered twice a day,

are struggling in the heat?

 I turned to

 Mr. Marshal’s Flower Book

in the comfort of air conditioning~

Where I can pick a bouquet

from the pages, while sipping

from Helianthus blooms

on a glass~

And enjoy some sunflowers

from Trader Joe’s indoors

on a flower-filled platter~

I was thrilled to get an unexpected

Flower Fix

from an antique mall last week!

And find a 95-piece-bouquet,

ripe for the picking~

At a bargain price of what

the 14 knives alone

would have been at Replacements.

And the floral equivalent of paying for a single rose

and receiving 2 dozen long-stemmed ones instead :)

Oneida Community Evening Star~

“Alexander Marshal’s Florilegium, or flower book, is one of the most exquisite and fascinating historic works of botanical art. The only surviving compilation of flower watercolors from seventeenth-century England, it has been admired for centuries for its dazzling color and its incredible attention to the intricacies of a varied array of plant species.”

“A highly skilled, although self-taught artist, Alexander Marshal was a horticulturist and famed entomologist who believed the cultivation of plants was essential to the study of the natural world.”

“He created his masterpiece over a period of thirty years, and in the nineteenth century, Florilegium was presented to King George IV to be housed in the Royal Library, where it has been preserved ever since.”

Lemon Sherbet Float~

lemon-lime beverage of your choice~

“Exquisitely beautiful, the flower paintings of Alexander Marshal have a timeless resonance that makes them look as fresh today as they did when they were first created more than 350 years ago.”

How delightful! I love this post, Mary, and I really, really like your Anthropologie glasses. I might try to order some for us to have!
I was so tired of leaving for the lake cabin on Friday only to return to dead containers on Sunday. Mr. Art @ Home bought me this watering system from Lowe’s that places tiny little sprinklers in each pot, and I set them to water twice a day @ 8AM and 8PM. My pots are thriving, and they are *huge*.

Your lemon sherbet float looks *so* refreshing. Yum!

    Adorable post as usual!

Nothing like bringing the garden indoors. Great idea. I sure can’t go outside to enjoy blooms. What a find the Oneida Community Evening Star was! Well done! I’m going to go get some sherbet. It has been years since I’ve had a sherbet float. Fun childhood memories!!!!! oxox

What a great book and to center this interesting post around. The sunflowers are so cheerful and as always your photographs are perfect. My husband would love that float. I can’t imagine a more perfect treat for a hot day. And that silverware! Overload of great things here!

You certainly know how to beat the heat. I’ll have one of those sherbet floats and enjoy that delightful book along with you. Sorry you are having to suffer through the heat this summer. I’m so thankful that our summer has been fairly reasonable. After our ordeal last summer, we feel extremely fortunate when yesterday’s high was only 100. Hot, but not anywhere like the temps we suffered last year. Being inside in the AC is a good plan, especially when it’s in an antique mall and one is finding beautiful bargains. ;-)

    What a great find!
I don’t think we can ever have too many flowers – they are such a luxury in the dark days of winter and such a joy all summer long. Why not collect as many as possible and make one’s surroundings a bower?

Mr. Marshall’s Flower Book looks amazing. You always find the best things from the book to the Sunflower cloche to the silverware, accompanied by that enticing beverage. I like your idea of gardening indoors!

  24. July 22, 2012 at 11:14 pm

Beautiful! I have mostly given up on outdoor gardening this year. I decided to do some indoor herb gardening. Hopefully that will work out better!

  25. July 23, 2012 at 1:25 am

You tied the book in beautifully with the rest of this lovely post. I definitely want to get my own copy. Flowers have such restorative properties that even just looking at pictures of them lifts the spirits. By the way, what a shopping coup on your flatware find. It’s really a fabulous set, and perfect for a summer table. (Or any table for that matter.) –Lucinda
