Susan’s blog {and store} is a feast for the eyes and taste buds~
You can see her post for Country Apple Dumplings, here.
I decided to pull out my skillets for
Skillet Apple Dumplings~
I was keeping an eagle eye out for recipes for my 6.5-inch Lodge Skillets ~ideal for smaller servings for two people to share or have their own :) Cornbread, Cobbler, Dutch Pancakes, etc.
The ingredients were surprising~
Besides sugar, butter, and cinnamon~ you need 2 cans of refrigerated crescent roll dough, 2 Granny Smith Apples, and last but not least, a 12 oz. bottle or can of Mountain Dew.
To cut down on the sugar I used Diet Mountain Dew which was in the fridge (my husband’s substitute ‘coffee’ for fishing trips :)
I also reduced the amount of sugar called for~ from 1 1/2 cups to 1 cup~ using 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup white.
This recipe makes 16 dumplings, which I cut in half~ requiring only one roll of crescent dough and one apple.
The directions call for baking in a 9 x 13 pan, but the skillets serve double duty~ to bake and serve~ cutting down on dish duty and ideal for Country Apple Dumplings!
For a single dumpling serving, you could use adorable
Perfect for your individual cast iron skillets. These look delish! Will have to give this recipe a try. Praline gelato is one of my favorite summer treats. I buy it at Whole Foods. Is Front Porch ice cream a local brand?
Oh, Yum!
REMINDER TO SELF: I need to pull out my mini cast iron skillets…not sure if mine are the adorable 3.5 or 4 inch ones, but they are perfect for individual servings! I meant to try your berry skillet cobbler for the 4th of July and then forgot all about it!
Mary , these look so adorable in the little skillets. Don’t you just love it when you stumble upon something so simple and good? Thanks for trying it and making it look so gourmet!
This is PERFECT TIMING. I am in charge of dessert for our dnner group on Sat. and THIS will be our dessert!!! Thans so much! I wll substitute some brown sugar too! I thin you meant tha you ended up using 12 cup regular sugar and 1/2 cup of brown for a total of 1 cup sugar, Right??? Thanks, Mary! XO, pinky
I would really love some of those mini skillets. They probably taste just as good in the 9 x13, but the skillets brings something extra to the party.
This is a delicious looking dish and a really interesting sounding recipe!
Oh my goodness, they look delicious! With Wisconsin apple season coming shortly, I can’t wait to try this wonderful recipe. You made them look even more appealing in those little skillets! I think I could buy everything Lodge makes :)
Mary, I haven’t made these in a long time because they’re was so sweet, but I’m going to make them again using your lower sugar recipe. LOVE your little cast iron skillets. I have a large one for corn bread and a griddle, but no small ones. They are so cute. Small cast iron skillets are now on my shopping list along with the Praline Coastal Crunch ice cream.
Thanks for sharing this lower sugar recipe…yum!, and have a great weekend,
Babs
Oh thanks Mary. I’m always looking for ways to cut down sugar or substitute sugar with Splenda. Your photos are beautiful and the dumplings look like I could reach in and take a bite.
Mary, I have tried this recipe as it is easy peasy…and so delicious….Great idea about cutting down the sugar with the diet version. I put my ingredients in one pan…i like the way you used the two skillets!
Yum, yum, yum! These look soooo good to me right now! Those pans are adorable and I checked out your link, then added them to my wish list! I always need good cooked apple recipes as Charlotte is allergic to some fresh fruit, including apples, but loves them! I will make these when my pans arrive and C comes home next time. Linda
