Cedar Linings

DSC_0299-001

The weather has been unpredictable and typical for winter here~ 60 degrees for a few days, then temps dropping to the 20s & 30s, thunderstorms, then a welcome snow shower. . .

DSC_0222-001

This cedar tree, a casualty of a thunderstorm

and high winds came down,

 thankfully missing the house.

DSC_0102-001

Biding my time until spring,

I looked for the cedar lining

and to our downed tree~

And added some cut cedar for a little evergreen

freshness to perk up the fireplace~

A new-to-me Goodwin’s Ironstone pitcher,

found at a favorite antique mall, is ready

to hold flowers or cedar until spring~

DSC_0033-001

I was drawn to her full-figure

and generous curves :)

DSC_0038-001

 Around the same time,

I also found this knife with bird

that I’ve been trying to identify~

DSC_0068-002

The knife was nesting in a bowl with other silverplate,

 endangered from the other knives

 and flatware, of becoming scratched~

DSC_0047-001

Like a good conservationist, I rescued this endangered

bird and brought it home :)

It’s marked anchor Rogers AA, Ricki Jill

identified it as a trout server!

But no luck yet as to the pattern.

And I added some cedar to a basket

on the door of my Potting Shed to

I love that you put the unfortunate demise of your cedar to good use! Your decorating style is fresh and beautiful!

  3. February 20, 2013 at 7:30 am

Beautiful photos as usual! I can almost smell the fresh cedar.

  4. February 20, 2013 at 8:03 am

Well, you know the old saying…”when life gives you lemons, make lemonade!” You surely did that! Great job!

  7. February 20, 2013 at 8:50 am

It must smell so good around your house and shed now, Mary! I keep looking at all my fallen trees but now most are in the woods and difficult to get through over all the stone walls. Love your pretty new full figured pitcher! I’m sure you will find many uses for her! Linda

Spring is on it’s way or here! Pollen on my door this morning.
The freshness of the green cedar branches is so calming and inviting. I love your new white pitcher! The trout server is beautiful. My husband loves to trout fish and eat it too.
Sorry about your tree but glad no damage was done.

Mary your posts always put a smile on my face! I love your creativity, I would have never thought to bring the cedar indoors. Brilliant!

  11. February 20, 2013 at 9:19 am

Ah, man! So sad about the tree!!! I HATE it when that happens!!! Not only do you lose a beautiful sight to behold in your yard, but you lose the shade it provides in summer AND there’s a big ol’ mess to clean up. You’ve made the very best of the situation, though, by using some of those great smelling branches all around. That is one of the best smells!!! Hooray for your conservationist approach to the trout server! :-) It’s beautiful!!! The pitcher is a knockout, too! I love classic white pitchers for serving AND for decorating. You can send me that clock anytime you’re ready, too! :-)

  12. February 20, 2013 at 9:35 am

Mary, you make the best of every situation. Sorry you lost that tree, but so thankful it didn’t damage your home. Fun to see snippets of your fireplace. It looks to be a cozy spot. Like the basket of throws sitting at the ready.
Love, love, love your curvy new ironstone pitcher and that knife, you already know it steals my heart. You have such a great eye!
Enjoy your day lakeside. Hopefully rain here in the next few days. At least that’s what the weatherman promises. ‘-)

  13. February 20, 2013 at 10:02 am

you make me wannta buy dishes…..I too have a cottage/shed and believe it or not a stained glass window to the left of the door, wish I had the lake.
Thanks for the wonderful posts, inspired! look forward to them….. a great way to start the day.

Sorry about the cedar tree, but you are using a lot of it and the smell must be delightful in the house. I’m sure you are very thankful that it didn’t hit your house.

What a beautiful post. I love how you used the cedar to freshen up your baskets for rest of the season. The white pitcher is beautiful as is the silver ‘trout’ knife. I’ve never heard of one before. I wonder how it’s used. Pamela

Soooo glad the tree missed your house Mary! My neighbor up the street had an elm come through his roof during Sandy! Love that you used it to your advantage and any pop of green in February is very welcome-enjoy:@)

  21. February 20, 2013 at 6:40 pm

I just love how you took advantage of the tree accident to be inspired and creative. I happen to love cedar in the house. My favorite part of all is the door with the basket and plate. LOVED that.

  22. February 20, 2013 at 7:26 pm

This is really a great post! You made something beautiful out of something that was not so good. Thanks for sharing this great post!

  23. February 20, 2013 at 7:40 pm

That was very fortunate that the tree didn’t fall on the house…phew!
I love the smell of fresh cedar…when I lived in SC we had several in the yard and I liked to cut a few branches to put in the closets…specially when the weather was gloomy (we lived in 70 acres of woods by a river) and closets tended to start smelling damp and mildewy at times…
    Great post!

  24. February 20, 2013 at 7:42 pm

Only you, Mary, would find the cedar linings to your downed tree! What a cute post! I love your new pitcher and pretty trout server. Your potting shed looks happy with its basket of cedar and transferware plate.

  25. February 20, 2013 at 8:14 pm

What a great way to use all the cedar branches – so sad that the tree came down, though! The knife is so unique and lovely!!

  26. February 20, 2013 at 8:42 pm

Your knife is something, so pretty! I love your potting shed wreath…the basket, greenery and dish are just perfect together!

  27. February 20, 2013 at 8:55 pm

It is so sad to lose a tree. So sorry, but I bet the cedar smells divine inside. the new pitcher is gorgeous as is the fish server!! xo marlis

  28. February 20, 2013 at 11:42 pm

So sorry to hear you lost a tree in the latest storm, good news that no one was hurt. I love the texture and color of the cedar in the new pitcher. Beautiful vignette, lovely photos!

  29. February 21, 2013 at 6:21 am

So sorry you lost a tree! Looks like you made lemonade from lemons, though. I love the vignette featuring the bird knife, as well as the basket of cedar with the pretty plate!

  30. February 21, 2013 at 6:55 am

You were so fortunate that the tree missed your house! One of our neighbor’s trees fell in our yard this year and missed everything, too. It fell perfectly between two of our trees! It was a dead pine tree, so I did not have all of that lovely cedar to use. You have used it beautifully. I do love that knife. I have Sheffield plate fish knives that have beautiful fish designs on them. I am wondering if yours is to supposed to used for eating some sort of game birds – you know those Victorians – a fish and fork for every possibility!

  31. February 21, 2013 at 9:36 am

The loss of a tree is always heart wrenching. Thank goodness it didn’t hit the house. Your use of the branches around the house and your pictures are fabulous, I can almost smell the cedar.

  34. February 21, 2013 at 7:55 pm

Happy that the cedar didn’t fall on the house! Love your vignette.

  35. February 21, 2013 at 8:07 pm

So sad that the tree came down but I can almost smell the heavenly aroma of the cedar!!!! I always love your basket on the shed door. The trout server is beautiful! XO, Pinky

  36. February 23, 2013 at 6:58 pm

What a shame about your cedar tree, but I’m glad you didn’t have any damage to your home. Your cedar arrangements are making me think I’ll go cut some from my cedars..love the basket arrangement in the fire place.

  37. February 23, 2013 at 7:19 pm

Oh my goodness, I love how you found the cedar lining! You made such great use of all of that cedar.I must admit the basket on the door with the little plate stole my heart.

Great to have you be a part of Seasonal Sundays.

I have cedar trees on my property, and I love using them like this! This weather has indeed been crazy – one day last week it snowed an inch in the morning, then the sun came out and melted it, then we had thunder and rain. Happy Saturday from the enchanted oven.

Love the “cedar lining” comment! The nice thing about cedar is how long it looks good! I’m also drooling over your beautiful blankets. Any info on them?

As someone who lives in a redwood forest my motto has been “when life brings you storms, make wreaths!” Love your blog, so inspirational!!

  42. February 27, 2013 at 11:56 am

When I come visit you, I’m always just in awe of how pretty everything is. Putting the pieces of cedar around and combining it with that plate is just so pretty! I might copy that idea. :)

  43. February 28, 2013 at 10:48 am

oh I hate it that your tree came down, but the basket filled with clippings is wonderful, and that knife is just amazing,. Trout knife? wow, yay for Ricki Jill!!! smart girl!
