In the Potting Shed: Tabletop Nesting with Blooms and Dishes

DSC_2801-001

You may have noticed that playing with flowers and dishes are two of my favorite things. ;)

DSC_2343-001

I took the time to stop and smell the peonies and shared some pretty in pink blooms around the Potting Shed this week.

DSC_2825-001

Blue and pink are a favorite color combination especially when it comes to pink flowers and blue dishes.

DSC_2835-001

I had a little tabletop fun in celebration of peony season with a few Ball jar bouquets in the window and on counter top of my Potting Shed.

DSC_2850-001

Birds flew in to nest on white dishes and along the border of dinner plates. I have a set of four assorted bird dishes used herethat I found at HomeGoods several years ago. I continue to get questions and emails about where to find them.

DSC_2867-001

They still fly in to roost at HomeGoods from time to time ;) but you can find them on Amazon right now for the set of four: Gracie China Bird Trellis Porcelain Accent Plates.

DSC_0039-1

They’re just the right size to serve an easy dessert! Use a cookie cutter to cut a bird shape out of puff pastry, brush with egg wash and sprinkle with sanding sugar and bake until golden. Serve with lemon curd, berries and whipped cream.

DSC_2816-001

I used reversible napkins as placemats, layering some blue and white pattern and color over a jute runner.

DSC_2875-003

A pair of garden gloves hold a napkin and provide a pocket for assorted vintage flatware, a fun addition if you’re having a garden party or for lunch with your garden club!

DSC_2843-001

I’m always happy to add a flower to my garden of flatware, especially if I can pick a pretty blooming handle for a $1 a piece!

DSC_2838-001

And on the look out to add a stamped spoon marker and garden metaphor for life: “Love what you grow and what you love will grow”.

Ball jar are filled with bouquets of fragrant peonies and privet that’s blooming now. . .

Blue and white delight Mary! Love the way you’ve mixed things, it all comes together to make such a cozy spot! The white bird dishes are wonderful, such a handy size. And your peonies, wowza! Your very green thumb has been so successful, what a treasure to have those blooms growing in your garden!

Oh my, be still my heart! Your playing with dishes and flowers brings us such joy, Mary! I love the pink white and blue combo with all your magical touches. I love those birdie dessert dishes, and filled with berries, lemon curd, whipped cream, and topped with a crunchy sweet bird, even better! One of my favorite things that you collect is the vintage, assorted flatware….swoon! Enjoy your time playing, Mary!

Love it all…and the bird cut out on the berries thrilled me. YOU make my day!

Oh Mary….(notice that is how I seem to start out all my comments to you?) This post has given me SOOOO many great ideas! I’ve been wanting to host a “Meet the New Neighbors” luncheon this spring. These settings & that LUSCIOUS fruit compote would be the perfect touch, with the darling baked birds!!!
I have the same pretty blue glassware but would have to use my Blue Willow dishes instead of the delightful mix you’re created. LOVE the little white birdie plates!! You do seem to have a “thing” about birds, huh? LOL
Thanks for sharing ALL your wonderful ideas & great finds. I hope you know how special you are & how you make my life so much richer via your blog.

My spirit just had an ah moment when I saw the dew captured on the pink peonies. Your photography is on a professional level. Each picture has wonderful composition and great lighting. I greatly appreciate the time you put in so as to share with us. Thank you.

Ooooh, I’ll have one of the berry treats please! Blackberries were 99¢ at Aldi’s last week, I couldn’t believe it:@)

I swear, Mary, nobody does it better when it comes to tablescapes. Gorgeous! I think those bird dessert dishes look even better stacked on the blue & white (even though they look terrific on the white stack, and I use little to no blue in my house).

Mary, the combination of blue/white with the pink peonies makes my heart sing! So beautiful! Pa @ Everyday Living

Your photos are always great but that dessert looks divine! You can taste it through the screen. I shared your idea of using garden gloves for the flatware with the hostess of our Garden Club luncheon. Everyone was impressed. I think you would be pleased with her interpretation.
I’m green with envy of your beautiful peonies.

Mary, this post brought big smiles from start to finish. Love the pretty dishes! It’s obvious that you have fun with dishes and flowers in the potting shed. I get vicarious delight from it all. Cute stamped spoons. I have one from a friend, but should add some more. Cute touch to the table!

So much prettiness so little time! I can imagine sitting there having my morning coffee and danish pondering what I will do on that day. You create such storybook settings- love it! Those pink peonies are striking with the dishes. I can’t imagine how good that must smell with all of those peonies!

Oh how I love the little bird dishes!! They are the most fun and delightful dishes ever. Thanks for the inspiration, I found them several years ago when you posted and am so grateful, just can;t tell you how much I have enjoyed these and by friends love them at the table also. I found the cutest white bird figurines that I realized was a vase and of course, they had to come nest at my house. Ever ytime these are used for a meal, I think of you Mary and just have to thank you for all the joy and inspiration
