A reprise of our {Less} Labor Day Picnic~
I hope you enjoy a second helping!
We’re enjoying a lakeside picnic over the holiday weekend~
I’m testing the theory that everything tastes better out of a jar~ it certainly is convenient & more fun :-)
A layered salad made in advance~ a minimum of 8 hours or up to 24~ chilling for the flavors to meld.
You can enjoy the fruits of your labor later ~ since that’s the point of this summer holiday :-)
Tasty & satisfying~ and a salad that my husband enjoys.
You can pack individual salad jars, so serving is less problematic & less labor is required :-)

I substituted some chickpeas for yellow bell peppers~ not as colorful~ but pleasing to our taste buds and used a blend of Monterey Jack & Cheddar cheese instead of Swiss since that’s what I had on hand.
If your grocery store bakery sells corn muffins, you can skip making the corn bread for even less labor for this salad :-)
Skewers of cherry tomatoes, artichoke hearts, prosciutto, cheese, olives, & cheese tortellini~
Citrus infused water with lemon & orange slices~ refreshing & thirst quenching~
Dessert in a jar with very little labor using fruits in season~ plums, peaches, berries of any kind or combination.

Instead of making a custard, I mixed a jar of lemon curd with 8 oz of 1/3 less fat cream cheese~ (less labor :-)
Layer custard or lemon curd mixture with the angel food cake (or pound cake), peaches & blueberries. Assemble, chill & enjoy!

I think using the jars for a picnic is brilliant. It also helps with the cleanup! I love the colorful quilts, flatware, and flowers. The textures of the baskets make the vignette perfect.

Just as good the second time around. We’ll also be having a picnic with everyone contributing to the food. It’s not likely to look as pretty, but it will be good!

I KNEW I could count on you for a lakeside post! I soooooooooo wish we were going to the lake for the weekend. Or taking the boat out but, hubby hates a Holiday Weekend at the lake because so many accidents happen then… Sooooooooooo I guess we’ll be staying home. Thanks for sharing. I could feel my heart rate slowing to a nice lazy pace as I took in your picnic by the lake. All the pretty colors make for great eye candy and the food–let’s just say it ALL looks scrumptious! Great timing on the dessert as a friend gave me a HUGE bag of perfectly ripe peaches and I am scrambling to find a way to use them. Hope you have a delightful and labor-free holiday weekend!

I love your (less) Labor Day picnic with your beautiful quilt as a backdrop. All your jarred food is so creative and mouthwatering. The gingham and polka dot flatware is fun and whimsical. I’d gladly partake at your outdoor setting anytime.
How pretty and the salads and dessert are making me so hungry. Love the idea of citrus flavored water. I’ve put lemon slices in water, but never thought of adding orange slices. I’m going to pick up some more lemons and oranges at the grocery to make some.

We love picnics and this year’s Labor Day was a perfect opportunity to go to our favorite High Park in Toronto and have a little fun with our children. But now that I’ve read your post I am looking forward to our next trip even more and I’ll definitely use some of the creative ideas shown in your pictures.
