Identifying Birds & A Winner!

I spotted Audubon’s Masterpieces,

like a rare bird, hidden in a clearance

stack of books for $9.99~

Complete with 150 prints of John James Audubon’s

beautiful and scientific renderings~

Fun to compare his artistic illustrations with

our bird sightings at the lake~

and occasionally the rare Blackhawk. . .

I spotted a bird last week that

I’m still trying to identify. . .

Even Mr. Audubon’s Masterpieces

and detailed illustrations were no help~

Although it does bear a resemblance to

the Carolina Turtle Dove or Common Magpie :)

DSC_0061-001

I discovered it nesting in a bowl with other silverplate,

and endangered from the other knives

and flatware and becoming scratched~

So like a good conservationist, I rescued it

and brought it home to roost!

Markings identified the knife as anchor Rogers AA~

Congratulations Susan! Mary, that knife is just gorgeous. I hope you find out the pattern and will be able to get more pieces. A tablescape with that pattern would be awesome!

What a great price for the Audubon book. Most of them are snapped up quickly and dealers frame the prints for big bucks. I think I would just cherish the book to enjoy over and over. It is magnificent.

Your knife is very beautiful too.

I am beginning to see birds that have been away. Robins and our neighborhood hawk that resurfaces this time of year. The pair of hawks destroyed my neighbors begonia on her porch eating it down to the numbs while they were away! Actually just breaking off the stems and mutilating it. I think they were scratching for lizards that lived in the pots.

Delightful post to start my day!

Congratulations Susan! Oh Mary that knife is beautiful!

  5. January 23, 2013 at 7:57 am

    Congrats to Susan!
Mary your knife is a trout server, but I’m unsure of the pattern. It might be by Crosby Hunnewell and Morse.
I love your Audubon book with the lovely prints in it. My husband’s grandfather was the architect who designed the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, so we appreciate his scholarship and talent.

    Great post!

    Congratulations to Susan!
Mary, your knife is beautiful. I wish I knew the pattern. You found a wonderful treasure with that book. My parents property in CT was right up against the Audubon preserve. They always had a wonderful display of birds at their feeders.

Hi Mary, I started reading your post but got happily lost in your links! I am wondering if your neighbors think “there goes the crazy blog lady floating under the deck with her camera”… The blackhawk is made right here in CT and my hubby and son (with the Scouts) have been in the factory and even sat in one. Quite impressive, although when they fly over our house the windows do shake. Your bird shots are fabulous!!! We have three different woodpeckers on ours right now and with the extreme cold expected this weekend we will have to refill it each day. Linda

Mary, love the book. I have a set of Audubon Nature Encyclopedia left to me by a great, great uncle and they are a treat.
I do live a treasure hunt! Could you post two more pics of your lovely server knife? One of the back stamp and one of the entire piece including the actual handle? The AA was a designation of the quality of the silver plate. There were many, many silver companies with Rogers in the name.

Your photos of the Audubon prints are lovely, as too are the photos you’ve captured of the birds at your lake! We live on a small lake and have seen a vast array of birds and wildlife over the years and are always amazed by the variety and their beauty! They are so fun to watch! I look forward to your postings and marvel at all the beautiful and creative things you come up with! Thanks for sharing with us!

  28. January 23, 2013 at 11:48 am

Mary, the book was a wonderful find. Audubon’s plates are all gorgeous. This book belongs in your library. And the knife, it too has found the perfect home. I smile at the way you share these treasures………always so cleverly! ~ Sarah

Always enjoy seeing your beautiful bird photos. Birds on a rope has been a favorite from the beginning. What a book find. If you take the time to dig in the piles, somrtimes you get lucky. The knife is exquisite. Carolyn NC

Mary, you are one of the luckiest people I know…that book was a real score and the knife is gorgeous! I hope you find the name of the pattern.

I’ve always enjoyed your photos of the wildlife around you. Your ‘camera eye’ is very talented!

Beautiful book–Audobon prints are always so beautifully detailed–and the knife is just lovely! And such a gorgeous, stylish birdfeeder! I’m sure that our local pair of blue jays would love to trade our shabby-chic wooden feeder for a weekend escape to your deluxe birdhouse retreat! :-)

What a fabulous find in the Audubon book and the butter knife with the swallows?. I’d love to know the pattern if you should find out. I looked online, but with little success. Congratulations to Susan for winning.

  37. January 26, 2013 at 7:55 am

What a fantastic find that book is! I love the pattern on the knife. No help I’m afraid in identifying the maker but I believe the bird may be a swift.
    Good luck with your hunt.
