A Stars & Stripes Salute~
In a centerpiece and a book for the coffee table~
in celebration of the American flag
for Independence Day!
I found a copy of Long May She Wave for $9.99 at a bargain outlet last week. I’m pledging allegiance to shop for books there more often. :)

The Revolutionary Congress resolved in 1777 that ‘the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white, that the Union be 13 white stars in a blue field representing a new constellation.’
Since that time, the American flag has been raised high in wartime triumph and peacetime celebration; burned in fervent protest; sewn lovingly onto quilts, caps, pillows, and bags; appropriated by the commercial sphere to sell goods as varied as cigars, and designer clothing, and rock-and-roll albums; and faithfully honored every 4th of July to celebrate America’s independence. This collection of more than 3,000 Stars and Stripes artifacts ranges from Civil War-era banners and Native American braided moccasins to an early 20th-century ‘friendship’ kimono and original flag art by several of the world’s leading designers.
In its deluxe format with over 500 illustrations, LONG MAY SHE WAVE gives wide berth to the flag in all its manifestations, and the result is a stunning visual history of America’s most treasured symbol.

Since I love mixing patterns, I appreciate how you’ve combined your red, white and blue dishes. These days I’m liking anything that uses blue and white though I have very little in that color way. Hope you are planning a boating outing on the 4th.

What a lovely tablesetting!! The birdcage with the flags is spectacular! And the cobalt vessels with the hydrangeas and the flag are perfect (I need to remember that one. [wink]) The top blue plate is stunning…it’s sort of reminiscent of bandana art.

Mary, I’m thrilled you found a copy of Kit Henrich’s book. I had the good fortune to see his exhibit in NYC in 2000. I was there for the 4th of July, and the American Institute of Graphic Arts had his collection on exhibit. This was before he published a book. It is my favorite coffee table book! I’ve given it as a gift at least a half dozen times. It’s a must have for anyone who loves patriotic memorabilia.
I want to pull a chair up and dine at this beautiful table! I thought those napkin rings were antique at first glance. Guess I’ll make a stop at Pottery Barn later today. Love the one with square details!

This is truly beautiful, Mary. I especially love your quilt table-topper and the unique bird cage. The cobalt blue bottles are wonderful! Your book looks quite interesting; I have a “geeky” fascination with flags :) and I’ve always loved our beautiful American flag.

I never would have thought of combining my Pink Willow dishes with blue ones but they pick up the pale red in your quilt perfectly & I love how much of the rims show around the edges. Well done!
Now I’m off to find that book!

Your various transferware layers fit your patriotic theme so well and pair beautifully with your lovely blue goblets. The superb quilt sets off your tasteful napkins and I love the birdcage adorned with flags as a centerpiece.

Hope your fourth hasn’t been as wet as ours since you probably had boating plans. It has rained all day here but I have enjoyed the restful sound of the steady rain. I actually like rainy days and we had no plans this year. Kind of nice.
