A Little Bit of Fall

DSC_7335-001

Fall is a week away, but it still feels

like summer in North Carolina.

DSC_7352-001

While I’m ready to fling myself into fall,

dress in layers and harvest pumpkins,

I’m easing my way in, until

Mother Nature cooperates.

DSC_7339-001

Mums are readily available and help ease the transition~

I found tricolor pots of mums at Lowe’s,

that blend the colors of summer and fall.

DSC_7336-001

I added some natural materials to enhance

and soften a wreath, with the same method

as my fall garland on my table.

DSC_7390-001

I started with an artificial wreath as a base,

and added a pair of vintage garden tools.

DSC_7392-001

Cable ties hold the tools securely,

and allow for easy removal later.

DSC_7385-001

Dried hydrangeas and oak leaves were

added for some softness & fullness.

DSC_7319-001

DSC_7327-001

Leaves won’t turn here until mid-October

and pumpkins won’t arrive for another week,

I’m ready to cozy up with pillow versions of both!

Love your autumn design, so fresh, so pretty! I think this is the year of tri-color mums, they are showing those here in Michigan too. Inspirational!

Wonderful! Come on Fall! What would you do without your shed?! What would *we* do without your shed?!!!!!

Hi Mary, Your fall setting is so inviting–I want to curl up in that plaid blanket right now! We have had just a touch of fall temps this weekend and spent some time on the deck cozily wrapped in a blanket watching the clouds drift by and a hawk soaring overhead, but the leaves have not yet changed. My mums are in, but your pictures are inspiring me to get the rest of my fall decor up too! Linda

Your attention to detail and all things beautiful are always inspiring! Lisa

Your setting is so pretty, Mary. I love your enhanced wreath and all your special touches. The brown leaf pillow is my favorite and looks great with the cozy throw on the bench. As for summer, I’m always ready to say “good riddance”, at least here in Texas, and bring on Fall! xo

Love your styling! Recently discovered your blog, and you’re my new favorite! I look forward to each post for inspiration. It’s still hot here too – I’m happy that it’s just in the 90’s and hopefully we’re out of the 100’s for this year (Dallas area). But I am SO ready for fall – and fall decorating!

  7. September 16, 2013 at 8:14 am

I , like you, am ready for fall! It has been too hot too long! Ready for the mums. Will have to go to Lowes. Have to get ready for the trick a treaters🎃
    Enjoy your week!

Here in the northeast I would love it if summer would continue a little longer…it’s too short for me! Your garden setting is a lovely mix to transition us into fall. Thanks for the kick in the butt! I need to give it up and move on with my fall decorating.

  13. September 16, 2013 at 9:35 am

This is so pretty Mary! We bought a truckload of mums yesterday! It is finally feeling like real Fall in StL.

I love the tricolor mum pot! I hope I can find those here, we have soooo much to do outside, everything is “overgrown dead!” You have given me lots of ideas and creative energy as usual, and now I’m looking forward to it instead of dreading it! I love the vintage tools tucked in your wreath~are the “girls” from Gathering in the Garden still around? My copy is supposed to arrive today, I can’t wait to see this beautiful book in person! It’s still 90 here too but beautiful cool mornings~ok, I’m off to pretty things up a bit, thanks for sharing your talents!

This is my favorite blog! I love the settings you create. I live in the Phoenix area & am trying to “think Fall” as well.

  17. September 16, 2013 at 11:45 am

Beautiful, I am ready to start decorating for fall. You are always an inspiration.

  18. September 16, 2013 at 12:26 pm

Mary, what a pretty setting for fall! I would love to put some mums out back on the porch area; but, it is still so hot here! I can live vicariously through you!

  20. September 16, 2013 at 1:26 pm

I will be in the Winston-High Point-Greensboro area later this week and am hoping to feel ‘fall in the air’…probably too early to see leaves turn, but still will be a big change from our ‘almost summer’ fall temps here!…Hmmm…maybe I can get my siblings interested in a day trip closer to the mountains… ;-)

    September 16, 2013 at 2:24 pm

We have a touch of Fall colors in the mountains. Alas, they are relatively dull due to the extremely hot Summer. It was our hottest summer ever here according tot he weather bureau. Your decorations are wonderful, as always.

  22. September 16, 2013 at 6:29 pm

It is still most definitely SUMMER in Texas! Please,,,,cool air….come soon!!
    Gorgeous photos!!

  23. September 16, 2013 at 8:12 pm

To answer your question, a little bit of both. I do kinda hate to see summer go BUT I ADORE Fall, being able to layer my clothes, sip some cider, watch football, etc. I am NOT happy that we will have to do the LEAVES at the old house again:(. Your gardeb vignette is beautiful. I have been hunting for a throw and can’t find a pretty one like yours. Where did you get that? I also was at 2 Lowes this weekend and didn’t see the tri colored mums, THEY are fabulous! Have a beautiful week. We are getting a taste of Fall SOME days, then it warms up again:)

I too have brought some big mums, plus a few smaller ones for my window box. I like how you used the garden tools on your wreath, I have the same green one it was my moms.
    Have a super day!

I am so ready for fall! Your beautiful post has me wanting to stop for some more mums and cornstalks on the way home from work tomorrow!! We have had some beautiful weather the last week here, just right for outdoor decorating. You have created a perfect little fall retreat!

  26. September 17, 2013 at 2:36 am

Hi Mary! I am really ready for Fall! I love the autumn colors and temps and warm days with cool nights! Your decorations are beautiful! It is in the 30’s here tonight. I am cozied up with my girlz and a down blanket! Nothing like it! Hugs to Chloe and Gracie!

  27. September 17, 2013 at 5:53 am

Just gorgeous. Greetings from Toronto, Canada. Our nights are getting chilly now… I love a new centrepiece that I recently saw– it was a hollowed out pumpkin with flowers in it. Very beautiful. Hello from your Canadian cousin. : )

Dear Mary, as usual you display everything so well. Is just beautiful!!!
I, in South Florida, do not see much of a change in seasons. But this September can actually feel a change in the air. This little change is enough for me. Interesting pic of your acorn tree, have never seen a real one. Enjoy your autumn days!!!!

Oh I love this. The plaid throw and all of the beautiful wreaths, flowers and accessories create such an inviting spot to sit and enjoy. Stunning. Thanks so much for linking to Inspire Me. Hugs, Marty

  31. September 17, 2013 at 11:18 am

Beautiful early fall vignette, Mary! I love the idea of holding things together with twist ties! Very clever!

  32. September 17, 2013 at 3:06 pm

Mary, our local Lowe’s did not have those tricolor mums or I would have fallen for them, too! That was a great tip you gave about using ties to attach things to wreaths. I was sweating bullets when I decorated our porch (not a very pretty image, huh?) but it is a gorgeous day today with a hint of fall in the air.

  33. September 17, 2013 at 7:59 pm

oh i love your big leaf pillow, cute cute CUTE! so many wonderful shots, you have me pining for fall…

  34. September 17, 2013 at 11:39 pm

Mary, would you just come on up and get my house ready for fall?

  35. September 18, 2013 at 9:11 am

So so beautiful! I love the tip about the zip ties for holding heavy objects. We’re still sweltering here in Dallas, it was already 81 when I got up at 5:30 today :( Let’s all hope for cool weather soon.

  36. September 18, 2013 at 9:35 pm

Absolutely gorgeous! I agree with Mary…will you come get my house ready for fall too? I’d be honored if you shared this at our All Things Thursday Blog Hop. It just went live at 8pm Central. Hope to see you there!
    Blessings,

Such a pretty setting, Mary! It at least looks like Fall in your neck of the woods. : ) Love that Lowe’s has tricolor pots of mums.

  39. September 19, 2013 at 4:05 pm

    Beautiful….love the birdhouse.

  40. September 19, 2013 at 5:02 pm

    Mary:

Your fall display is lovely. The vintage tools are a great addition to the wreath. And that blanket is awesome.

I’m flinging, I’m flinging!!! love that wonderful settee, I think I may come by and camp out on it!

  42. September 19, 2013 at 7:28 pm

Great fall display. The rake with leaves is cute. The bench with the blanket looks cozy and I can imagine sitting there wrapped in it having a cup of coffee watching the steam roll in the morning. The wreath with the vintage tools looks great too. I had something like those once! Love the mums- they’re so colorful and set the tone for fall! I’ve seen a couple of trees with color, but basically we’re still green up here. It will change by mid October though. I love it but wish it would last so much longer!

  43. September 20, 2013 at 4:32 pm

Very, very pretty, Mary. I like all the browns that you used & I don’t usually care for brown very much. You make them look good!
Our leaves are already changing colors, even though it is still very warm. *sigh*

I love everything about your Fall Potting shed decor…….My hubs is building me one and yours is the model!!! Thanks for sharing your beautiful ideas!!

  46. September 30, 2013 at 7:18 pm

I love all of your fall seating area, but I especially love that chocolate brown maple-leaf pillow and the brown and teal plaid throw under it–so pretty!

  47. September 15, 2014 at 10:52 am

The wreath looks fabulous- and the mums are the perfect fall touch! The plaid throw and pillows look great there. I am ready for fall- I’ve kept myself busy enough through the summer to feel I accomplished enough and now I’m ready to slow down and relax. We had a nice fire going out on the patio last night- love the coolness in the air- makes the fire so much more enjoyable!
