The challenge was to find a photo for tabletop inspiration to share and recreate. I had the same plaid dinner plates as Susan that I purchased from Pottery Barn last year.
When I saw the Better Homes and Gardens salad plates on Susan’s table, I couldn’t resist picking up a set of four from Walmart for $2.99 each. Thank you, Susan!
With her table as inspiration, I added a plaid tablecloth
and layered napkins, one plaid and one identical to hers
with green velvet trim.
My napkin rings have a pine cone like Susan’s
but with the addition of bells to jingle all the way :)
My white chargers are solid instead of pierced,
and I added a square woven charger
for a little rustic texture . . .
. . .and I added a little tree to the
table with some birds and ornaments.
A littleChickadee migrated from my friend Lynn’s nest, at Happier Than a Pig in Mud, and has been flitting back and forth from my Potting Shed to the table.
I used green goblets instead of red
at Susan’s table and green handled
flatware instead of twig.
Dear Santa: I know you’re always watching and I have been a good girl this year so it would make me happy to find twig flatware in my stocking . . .
Hi Mary, I love all your elements together–the plaids and woodland dishes and the sparkly chickadee and cardinal! Your little tabletop tree is so cute too with all the pinecones and burlap ribbon. The two tables have such similar pieces and yet have such different feelings. I would look forward to sitting at either one! Linda
It’s beautiful, Mary! Great copy!
I bought some of those salad plates this year. The tree and the farm scene. That table is coming up Thursday in A Farmhouse Christmas. Just love those little ol’ dishes!
Love your table and of course Susan’s. I bought these plates when they first came out and ordered more on line. Also, a set of 12 for my daugter-in-law. Couldn’t resist since they are great all winter for everyday. Like that they are not so Christmassy. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful and festive recreation! I too, am guilty of purchasing the BH&G salad plates from Walmart and I absolutely love them- can’t beat the price for the quality and I’ve no doubt twig flatware will make their way to Lake Norman from the North Pole :)
I’ll bet everybody will be heading to Wal Mart for those darling salad plates, Mary! I’ll, instead, be heading to jury duty, and on icy roads (oh my!). You did a fabulous job of copying Susan’s table. You, however, don’t need to copy anybody, as your tables are always inspirational. xo
I really love this setting Mary, plaid is always a favorite! Cute plates, I can see why everyone loves them! As I’m looking at your pretty table we have quite the snow storm going on, we’re expecting another 5″ today… I’m sure the chickadee is very happy to be down south! Thanks for the shout-out:@)
I love the Walmart salad plates…went out and bought them immediately, but my Walmart was out of the cardinal plates. I am at the “boxes all over the house” stage of decorating, and am hoping for a burst of energy today so I can finish things and remove the boxes! Your table settings are very motivating!
omg i am stuttering, if those salads are from walmart i have to get the heck into town pronto, but i was just there this weekend and saw nothing at all like that… i am WILD OVER THEM! i am making scott shop every walmart today on his way home… CUTE CUTE CUTE! you might imagine i am a nature loving freak… thanks for creating the cardinal sins so early, greed and lust! beautiful as always… and DANG I WANT THEM!
Well, darn! I never thought to do a table like someone on their blog for the challenge! I bought the same dishes at Walmart! I planned to do a table soon, with them so it MAY just be very similiar, since I planned to use a plaid tablecloth:):) It will never compare to yours however, you are the BEST!!!! XO
Mary, you do “nature” like no one else. It’s so beautiful with the plaid as a background, my faves are the squirrel ornament and the plate with the little deer!
Mary, I love your table setting! So many things to love…the plaid table cloth, the darling pine cone/jingle bell napkin rings and the beautiful tree. Those rascally bunnies are adorable, too! I love that photo with the little bird perched on the plates. It’s like the plate has come to life! :) I just know Santa will be bringing twig flatware your way…you’ll find so many uses for it! I would love to find some of those wonderful tray chargers…they remind me of some I’ve seen Mary Carol Garrity use in one of her books. Thanks for sharing this beautiful table!
Oh you chose the perfect inspiration for your table…I love those pretty plates from BH&G…even though you gain inspiration from another table, you always set out to make it your own by adding your magical touches..you had me at “plaid”…
So gorgeous, I love all the dishes you chose especially the plaid. Everything is so pretty, love plaid for Christmas, it just goes!!! Your tree and ornaments are just beautiful.
Adorable plates, Mary. I admired them when I first saw Susan’s table. Love mixing them with the plaid. I’ve had to use restraint to not rush out to buy a set for our table. ;-)
Fun to see the challenge. Not sure if I’ll get a table set this week. But I did pick out a photo just in case I get inspired to actually pull it together.
I really love the Walmart Salad Plates!!!! But when I went to my local store they had nothing like that on their shelves. When I googled it, they showed up on ebay but I can’t find them on Walmart’s website. Is it a mixed set or are they sold as a “Cardinal Set”, “Christmas Tree Set”, etc.? On ebay a bid on one Cardinal plate is currently at $7.50!!! Guess I must have missed seeing them in the store…..darn. Love your place setting, it is absolutely beautiful…….your blog pictures always brighten up my day! :)
Hi Anita, They must have gone quickly! Online they’re sold as part of a 12 piece ‘holiday set’ but it appears they’re out of stock. You can see them here.
I loved Susan’s table when she recently posted it and your recreation is just as wonderful! Maybe it was her inspiration table, but your table is all “Mary Style!” I love the velvet trimmed napkins, gorgeous, but I wouldn’t dare let anyone use them! Clever to bring out your hares, bunnies are always in season!
Jenna
This is so charming Mary, and so funny! I wonder how many of us dashed off to Walmart this morning to grab some of the Better Homes and Gardens Christmas plates? I did, and was halfway successful. I did find the sweet deer and the birds salad plates and the dinner plates but not the snowy tree salad plates. I could always roam further afield to more distant Walmarts but I have no excuse to add to my collection (addiction) of dishes. Great post!
I adore plaid, and your use of it with your table cloth and ribbons, plates, etc. is simply inspiring! I have those velvet trimmed napkins, and they’re my favorite. I can’t believe Walmart has those plates! Who knew?!
Love it!
I have the plaid plates and some plaid napkins…would love the Better Homes & Garden salad plates but haven’t seen them at our Walmart…I guess we don’t get everything that the mainland Walmart stores offer…
I absolutely love plaid. But I don’t have tons of it for Christmas, except in napkins and stockings. But I do have lots of red and white ticking! I love the cardinal ornament….they’re my favorite!!!
Simply gorgeous! You did a beautiful job of following the inspiration photo, yet adding your own creative touches. I think we’re all drawn to plaid elements at Christmas!
Hi Mary, This copycat tablescape is every bit as lovely as the original. You have kept the feel and spirit and the wonderful woodland feel. I love your chargers and the tartan tablecloth. I love tartan, I mean really love tartan in a tablescape. I plan to do one next week. Have a wonderful week! Candy
Back for a second look. I was in a big hurry earlier. You met the challenge perfectly. I love hearing your thought processes. The BHG dishes are charming on top of the striking plaid plates and white chargers. I need to check out World Market.
Mary your table is lovely! I really love those WalMart plates and the plaid! Your little tree is so cute with all the birds. I used one of your tables as my inspiration for this challenge, hope you check it out. I didn’t come close to copying yours, but I had fun doing my ‘interpertation’!
Hugs,
Linda
Oh my I do love your creation! The inspiration is a great one of Susan’s tables! The plaid table cloth is a beautiful background for the plaid plates and the Walmart plates. The Christmas tree with all the woodland creatures is precious as the centerpiece. You met the challenge and were so successful!
Wonderful interpretation from Susan’s table. Love the plaid wrapper for the tree and all your sweet ornaments. The dishes, napkins and napkin rings are wonderful!
Of course I am loving the plaid!! I am doing plaid this year – I just find it so warm and comfortable feeling, just like your beautiful table. I am crushing on your plaid plates!!! Hope Santa is good to you and you get your twig flatware!! I want to see all the things you do with it!!
OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m going to slip into Walmart tomorrow and see if there are any of those salad plates left! I love the ones with the deer!!!
You did an amazing job of duplicating your inspiration table, Mary! I am another that is going to check out WalMart this weekend for those adorable plates, especially the one with the tree. I ♥♥♥ that squirrel ornament…can I ask where you got it?
Gorgeous tablescape and fabulous copy, you pulled it perfectly! The salad plates are simply gorgeous too! I love the plaid tablecloth with the dishes to go along…love it all!
FABBY
Mary,
I, too, am quite smitten with the Woodland Theme of these salad plates!
I hinted and hinted to “Mr.Ed”, but we’ll see. . .
I’m sure I’m on the Nice List this year!!!
I adore your hares on the tablescape!!!
Visiting from Susan’s!
Fondly,
Pat
I have been looking for some plates like this. I have the tablecloth that matches and was wanting 6 plates to sit on chargers as an accent just for decoration on the table. I’m on a fixed income and not wanting to spend a fortune on just 6 plates. if you know of anyone who wants to sell some please let me know. Thanks.

Susan will be flattered by your table! A wonderful theme and I love those walmart plates. Only if I could sneak them in my house! Hehe
It’s beautiful, Mary! Great copy!

Good morning Mary! What a festive table you set. Very inviting! I love a beautifully set table and you do it best!

Sooo excited that I found the salad plates at Walmart.com!! The baby deer is my favorite!
