Moving Day for the Potting Shed

We had an unexpected move at the end of October, required by a local ordinance to set my Potting Shed 50 feet back from the water.

My photos have been waiting in the wings with the holidays stacked up, and with the fact that I prefer to share photos of something pretty or delicious, and this is neither.

While I was wringing my hands in anticipation &

preparation, I’m happy to say *she’s* no worse for wear.

*If you have a floral cafe curtains skirting your

work benches and storage, you are a ‘she’ :)

Moving her was a relatively quick and easy job for a 70 ton

Link-belt hydraulic crane and veteran crane operator.

The crane operator estimated she weighs in at

about 4 tons.

Digging and setting new footers and

unloading her was the biggest chore. . .

Everything hanging from the rafters

came down in advance of the move. . .

In hindsight it was fascinating to watch, if you

A few tree branches got a good clip but

 otherwise the move was uneventful.

Landscaping is on the agenda for the spring and fall, with planting in full sun where she is now, as opposed to the shade~ under the trees where she sat before.

On the bright side, I have access to the window side now to plant or use for seating, where it faces my field of dreams. There’s also room off the back now for larger steps and small deck area.

I hope she’s going to be happy next to field

and bloom where she is planted!

Happy to hear the move went well. So sorry they made you move it in the first place. There is always something! You have the cutest little shed and it is decorated so darling before. Can’t wait to see it all finished. All the best to you.

So glad she survived unscathed. She is so darling. And I’m fascinated by the pictures so can imagine how it was for you 1) being there in person and 2) concerned about her. Looking forward to her blooming!

Wow ! New opportunities for you both . The old place looked always so cozy ! How was the winter for her ?
My little shed is waiting for a “little” redo .The weather is still “wintry” but as soon as it gets warmer , I`ll start. In the meantime I “collect” some inspirations. Thank you for sharing .

Such a beautiful potting shed…so glad everything went without a scar. Excited to see things blooming around her and a deck added! Love reading and seeing all the beautiful pictures you put on here.

Oh, my! I would have been a basket case watching this! Sounds like you have some fun work ahead! (And I still plan on moving in…….)

I can not believe how cute the inside of your potting shed is decorated! You are so talented, it’s unbelievable!!! Love looking at all your pics and I can tell you are a very special person! Thanks for delighting us always with your beautiful displays!!!

I loved seeing these pictures, thank for sharing. Sorry though for the frustration an expense. I too know the pain of the unexpected. We had five year of ground water flooding, lost MANY plants/shrubs/trees. (The engineers said it was the wettest art of the 100 year flood cycle.) Of course we moved here in the drought and I planted mostly dry land plants and natives. Then when the drain extension finally came, (ditches/culverts/trees cut down) I had to MOVE all the plants in the way-that took me two years of digging up and transplanting. Then of course the daily watering to keep the pots alive and the then the replanting and re-spreading all the mulch that washed away in the flood. You have a wonderful opportunity now for a lovely new and amazing garden in the sun… I urge you to explore NATIVE PLANTS. Have fun with your planting!

Sorry to learn of your inconvenience, however new opportunities do abound for you and your girl! Embrace the move and enjoy all that it has to offer. I have no doubt your shed is going to thrive in her new location and I can’t wait to see her basking in the sun!

I sure hope your magical potting shed will love her new place in the sun. Hopefully change will be a wonderful thing for Miss Potting Shed and she’ll enjoy her new surroundings and sunshine. I’m looking forward to the results. xo

You had a good safe move. The county had us move my husbands potting shed and it too went with no problem. Have a great weekend!☀🌴

“Wizard of OZ”!! , is what came to my mind the shed in the air and landing in a new beautiful place (at times) . I’m sure you will have it landscaped beautifully ! So glad the move was a success that is for sure :)

oh my goodness Mary, this post has me in tears! What a harrowing experience for you, I can’t imagine standing there watching your beloved little potting shed uprooted and dangling in the air! I probably would have had to wait months before I could talk about it too! Whew, it’s over now and the rainbow I see is you happily fixing it up all over again in it’s new spot. I know it will definitely BLOOM where it is now planted!
    Jenna

  17. February 21, 2014 at 8:19 am

Mary!!! I would have been very worried about those leaded glass windows! I cringed as soon as I saw the braces too. So exciting now to have a new view where she can dream next to the flower field and of course room for expansion is always a great idea! Please add a few rooms for us all to stay in! Linda

  18. February 21, 2014 at 8:24 am

I don’t know how you kept this to yourself. This was a major happening packing up all your breakables not to mention the worry of something going wrong. Of course, you didn’t skip a beat and I stay amazed at what you get done regularly. You will enjoy landscaping with the sun in mind which give you all kinds of possibilities.

  19. February 21, 2014 at 8:24 am

Mary, I’m so sorry that you had to undergo all the work and expense of moving the shed! I would have been such a nervous wreck that I couldn’t have watched her move! But it looks like she weathered the move just fine and I look forward to seeing her decorated for spring!

  20. February 21, 2014 at 8:30 am

What a gorgeous potting shed! You’ve got a real gem there!

  21. February 21, 2014 at 8:31 am

Ah, the local government, don’t you just love them?! Glad it all worked out, and I do believe that good comes from bad, so can’t wait to see the new deck and seating area. :-)

She will THRIVE in the SUNSHINE. I’ve had a cottage ‘at the edge of the forest’ … and my biggest sadness was that I could not plant colorful plants around her! I think you both will be very happy in her new ‘sunny home’.

  25. February 21, 2014 at 9:35 am

I know this must have been so frustrating, to have it just right and then have to move 50 feet! I can’t wait to see how she looks in her new home. I know she will be as beautiful as ever.

  26. February 21, 2014 at 9:49 am

Oh my heavens! One of the most beloved structures in all of blogland… being moved. I was biting my nails through the whole post! Thank goodness OUR beloved potting shed was fine and found a new area! Can you just imagine what you can now plant around the shed. Oh, I am so looking forward to this spring and fall at the Potting Shed!

  27. February 21, 2014 at 9:53 am

What?!??!! They can actually make you do that on your own property?!??!! Wow! That’s kind of a bummer. I guess the edict is in place for a reason, but still…..that seems like a lot of trouble and expense to go through for “The Man”. :-)

I’m glad everything went well and that the ol’ gal seems happy on her new plot of land. It will be fun for you to plant sun-loving flowers now!

  28. February 21, 2014 at 10:14 am

OH- I am so happy I saw this today! We will have to move a playhouse that is about the size of your garden shed when we move. We will be moving probably a very short distance and they will set it on a flatbed truck. I am so scared of it getting wrecked so I am happy to see that your move was successful. xo Diana

    • February 21, 2014 at 12:10 pm

Hi Nana Diana, I’ll keep my fingers crossed your move goes off without a hitch!

  29. February 21, 2014 at 10:22 am

What a beautiful shed!.. I love the interior, all your touches. I have what could be a charming shed near our house in the garden, but the husband has it loaded with “shed stuff”.

The pictures and process is fascinating. Thanks for sharing! I am so glad your beautiful shed survived the process and hopefully, you will enjoy the new location even more than the last one.

    February 21, 2014 at 11:14 am

Wow!!!! Boy, can you keep a secret!!! I was nervous thinking of all your wonderful treasures inside and how you had to clean out, get ready for the move and then just watch helplessly as your baby went on it’s journey, but I’m glad to see it was uneventful and everything is okay. I’m wiating for some new goodness to spring forth from her!!!

We also have a 10 x 16 shed — it is my One True Love. I get a lot of comments about it from friends and family. Including my sister who said (upon seeing my drawing of it) “Oh. Will you have someone paint windows on the outside?” Uh, no. They’ll be real windows! With ball-fringe curtains and candles in the windows. Some people have a different idea of what a shed should be. I think you share my idea of what a shed is really for.

Anyway, the purpose of this comment is to tell you that we had to have a building permit before we could build our shed. They told me at that time, what the setbacks needed to be. After the shed was built, the building inspector came by for a final check.

Sorry to hear that you had to move your little Lady, but I’m happy to hear that it went off without a hitch. I’m looking forward to seeing the landscaping and modifications for the new site.

    • February 21, 2014 at 12:09 pm

Thanks Lois! The county required us to buy a ‘special’ permit and required us to anchor it down with hurricane bolts. Then they came out to inspect it to make sure it was anchored down. Then they required us to move it. You have to love the convoluted ways of government.

What an ordeal! Glad it all went OK and it gave met an opportunity to see the inside of your shed, which I had never enjoyed. Wonderful! Good luck with the new landscaping and all the other silver lining aspects of the forced move!

  36. February 21, 2014 at 11:43 am

Wow Mary….I was so nervous just seeing the pics of the crane moving the garden shed…Can only imagine your heart racing as you saw it being lifted into the air…so happy that all went well….i can only imagine the grand plans for landscaping around your beautiful garden shed!

All I could think was EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!

I remember a wonderful lil’ book from childhood where there was a sweet happy house on hill with a cherry tree and a family. Time passed. The house was surrounded by humongous (mean) buildings. The house was very sad and down spirited. One day, a big truck came and hooked up the lil’ house and drove and drove to a lovely hill with an apple tree and a new family! A very good and satisfying ending.

May your darling shed be as happy…..

    Cheerio! E

  42. February 21, 2014 at 1:16 pm

So nice to see the rest of the pics and how wonderful you shared so many action shots! Love your mulched bed, you are all set for a fabulous new garden. It was DARLING in the trees by the lake, but now she can really spread her wings and grow, plant a fruit tree to pick from the porch, roses to scent the air, a Xmas tree for the season and fall colors to tumble, you have the perfect place to plan and play the four seasons away~

  43. February 21, 2014 at 1:38 pm

Glad that she made it in one piece. Every time I see you potting shed I could live there. I is so beautiful and I agree take advantage and plant glorious all year color around her.

Glad all worked well. I’m sure she will love her new spot and can imagine all the fun you will have now planning and planting…plus a deck, oh, my!

  45. February 21, 2014 at 3:11 pm

OMGoodness, I was a nervous wreck just looking at the pictures, I can’t imagine how YOU felt! You sure are a good secret keeper!!! It will be sad to not have the view of the water BUT I can’t wait to see how you plant around her in the SUN and how she will be decorated for SPRING!!!! I bet you are working on that as I type!!! We had a tree cut down in the back of our old house and they lifted it OVER THE HOUSE just like this. This brought back that memory. BTW, our settlement is next Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FINALLY:)

  46. February 21, 2014 at 3:38 pm

This post made me nervous just reading it! Happy the move went well for your little potting shed. I would have been sad if something had gone wrong!

Well, if it’s any consolation, I know without a doubt that you will make it beautiful. And you can plant so many more beautiful plants in the sun. You’re going to have a wonderful spring. Enjoy!

  58. February 22, 2014 at 10:05 pm

  61. February 24, 2014 at 11:20 am

What what an undertaking! We built ours on a concrete slab and if we ever moved the little barn/shed that slab would not be going anywhere! Too bad you didn’t know in advance about their ordinance before you built her. She’s so darn cute- I’m glad she relocated so well! I’m trying to figure out how I can take over our shed/barn and make it all mine! I don’t envy you having to empty her all out, but Im sure you’ve got her back in order!

  62. February 24, 2014 at 1:08 pm

I am sure it will be lovely in its new space – can’t wait for Spring, but that certainly was a scary move.

  63. February 25, 2014 at 11:09 am

Oh my goodness. I can’t believe you had to move that. It must have cost a fortune! I love the way you have decorated your shed both inside and out.
