Dear ThunderShirt…♥

Dear ThunderShirt,

My name is Chloe, but my mom

calls me High Maintenance. . .
DSC_6199-001

We wanted to let you know that your

shirt works like a tranquilizer for me and my

mom says she wishes we had found you sooner!

IMG_2472-001

My sister Gracie is not like me. (Thank heavens my mom says!) I have a lot of excess energy and anxiety, throwing all the pillows off the sofa (which she is fine with), whining (which drives her crazy) and begging for attention and food. . .

All. The. Time.

Around 4 to 6 pm is an especially hard time of day for me and my mom. We are both glad when my dad comes home from work and my mom says she is ready for a glass of wine. . .

DSC_6209-001

But once I’m strapped into your shirt,

hugging me like a sausage casing :) I’m instantly

calmed and the whining stops.

I actually wag my tail when she picks my shirt up

and heads over to me to put it on when I need it. . .

IMG_2474-002

My mom says “Thank Goodness for ThunderShirt”,

otherwise me & my mom were both

going to require medication :)

Love, Chloe

OH MY! Anxiety, energy, begging for food? Thought you were speaking of my two little ones. And seems like the magic hour of the day, evening when Mom and Dad want to relax…HELLO! Yep, and I’m hearing you about the wine glass! My friend got a Thundershirt for her dog and suggested I give it a try…guess I will be getting that now!!! Thanks for the good read. My challenged daughter gets your emails too, I hooked her up last year on her new IPad and she just loves seeing the pics of your two little ones. She will love this read! Thanks again!!!

Always wondered if the jacket worked. I have a friend who’s dog could really use one. So happy for you that you found a solution. Your dogs are just darling.

Thank you so much for sharing, Chloe! I am a 10 year old Bichon with syringomyelia. Because of that I can’t have cataract surgery and have partial blindness. Nights are scary for me so I keep my Mom up a lot and she is sleep deprived. I am going to try the thunder shirt. Love, Lacey

Good morning! I am glad to hear that the jacket really works. Wish I had it when my Bichon was younger. He is now calm and still begs for food! Oh well, they are cute and lovable !

  7. May 17, 2014 at 7:46 am

Oh my, what a good solution for Chloe and her excess energy! It’s like a swaddle which calms babies. I will have to tell my son and DIL about this for their dog. Thanks, Mary!

  8. May 17, 2014 at 8:06 am

I am amazed, never heard of such a thing, now I worry my husband would buy one for me, heck surprised he hasn’t thought of a straight jacket before… with all our pets I am the one who needs gentle soothing pressure!

DARLING puppy pics, would be cute if they sponsored you, every 2 weeks we see the girls calm and relaxed around town and country :-)

I often wondered if the shirt worked. I’m so glad Chloe is calmed by wearing it as I’m sure you are. I loved your story…so funny and thanks for sharing it with us. We have two Labs and nothing bothers them but they can be annoying when they want to go for a walk or when it’s nearing dinner time. I don’t think there’s anything I can do about that though…Ha!

  10. May 17, 2014 at 8:11 am

I too used this shirt for our Shitzhu who was afraid of storms. It really helped and I would recommend anyone with an anxious dog to try it!

Our golden retriever, Chester, loves his thundershirt too…a real sanity saver for all.

  13. May 17, 2014 at 8:54 am

I’ve been planning to order a Thundershirt for my Maltese, Cupcake, who hates storms. I never thought of using it other times, for calming her down when she’s too hyper. Thanks for the info!

  14. May 17, 2014 at 8:58 am

Wow! Thanks so much for the recommendation. Miss Molly does not like storms…plus she has a few other “issues”.;-) Perhaps we should look into Thundershirt.

Chloe is a cutie pie and so is her sister Gracie.

I have never heard of such a thing, but it’s been a while since I’ve had dogs. I’m so glad that it works. I wish they made them in adult sizes.

My golden retriever Granddog would freak out over thunderstorms. The shirt calmed her right down and made life so much better!!

  19. May 17, 2014 at 10:33 am

The Thundershirt is WONDERFUL! We have a female chihuahua that use to go bonkers…yes we could tell it was the weather that was making her bonkers above a chihuahua’s normal bonkers, LOL! Our girl would not try to hide under the couch, bed or covers, she would freak out, pace the floors and want to go right out into the bad weather. Crazy I know, but the first time we used the Thundershirt she calmed down immediately and ignored all the rain, thunder and lightning. It was a miracle. I have a sister that is really terrified of storms and thought about contacting Thundershirt to have one made for her :)

  20. May 17, 2014 at 10:34 am

So interesting! I taught Autistic children; weighted vests and tightly fitting vests helped them stay calm too. It’s fascinating that the pressure calms their senses. I’m glad to know about this. I have a cat that is very anxious in the car. I’ll give it a try. Thanks!

  21. May 17, 2014 at 10:46 am

What a great (and unsolicited) product endorsement! I will check this out for our Kerry Blue Terrier, who is extremely anxious during thunderstorms. Thank you!

  22. May 17, 2014 at 11:05 am

My next door neighbor has a Westie named Archie. Archie loves his thundershirt, too. Amazing things! Yeehaw to Chloe!

Hi Mary, I often wondered if this really worked. Rosie has storm anxiety. I will be looking into getting one for her, thanks for the review.

We have 2 dogs – 1 pit, 1 mixed. Our mixed Nina used to drive us crazy with thunder storms and fireworks or when we have workmen at our home. The thunder shirt has saved our sanity. When she gets excited we say Nina do you want your shirt and she comes and sits in front of her. Our Candy couldn’t care less and just bops through life. I’m glad it worked for Chloe too.

  25. May 17, 2014 at 11:49 am

Sadie has a ThunderShirt too. She is a nervous little girl when it comes to going in the car and doesn’t like storms either. Darling post! Sadie says she understands completely. ;-)

I’m so glad the Thundershirt works so well for Chloe. Wow! My good friend had a Bichon who always begged for food and wined until she got some. Haa! One of my Shiba Inus, Scout, shakes when it thunders outside. I need to try the Thundershirt on him. It’s sad to see him shake from fear of the weather. Chloe has the sweetest face.

I have a Thundershirt for my 13 year old australian shepherd/border collie mix. She has anxiety during storms & when riding in the car. We’ve been using the Thundershirt on her for a few years now & it immediately calms her panting & whining during a storm. Just like swaddling a baby. I wish I had found it sooner, because Rosie bites the window sills during a thunderstorm. Not a window sill in my old house that doesn’t have her teeth marks in it! So glad it is calming all of you too!

  28. May 17, 2014 at 12:25 pm

I am so sorry to hear that Chloe has “issues” but SO glad you found Thundershirt!!! And, that it works!!! My KIDS used to get rammy at the same time….JUST as Daddy was getting home from work too! Too bad there are not thundershirts for KIDS:):) The 2 legged vartiety:):)

  29. May 17, 2014 at 1:32 pm

Darn, I wish I had known about this when we had our little fur babies… both our Roger and Phoebe would go nuts during storms and fireworks…our solution was to put them in a bathroom with blankets, food and toys and that seemed to help some, but the Thundershirts sound like a miracle.

Thank you, Chloe. If we ever have 4 legged children with anxiety issues again we will keep the Thundershirt in mind.

  30. May 17, 2014 at 2:06 pm

I’m glad it works for you but for my little girl when there is a rain storm it doesn’t do anything:( Wish it did.

  31. May 17, 2014 at 4:37 pm

Hi there, I’m so glad you found Thunder Shirt-the first time I had seen this type of product was for a granddaughter on the autistic spectrum and the vest really helped her with anxiety. In the past, I could have used one or two, because all our dogs had terrible fears of thunder and fireworks. Our Hunter is the very first dog who didn’t. Thank you for sharing this valuable resource.
    Wags and hugs,

I so need one of these for my dog. She fears everything.
Thanks for the wonderful post and the information.
What a sweet dog you have. She’s adorable!

Mary, I enjoyed seeing these adorable pics of Chloe! I had wondered if the Thunder Shirts really worked. I have a cat whose personality has totally changed with age. All he does now is beg for food. I think I’ll look for the cat version!

  34. May 18, 2014 at 2:43 pm

I am so glad that this works for you and Chloe. I purchase one for Waldo as he is terrified of fireworks, thunder or car back firing. It did not help him, he still shivered and shaked with it on, so I took it back and got my money back. The only thing that I can do is give him his medication and sit real close to him. The other dog – no problem. I am so glad that it works for Chloe.

oh what a sweet baby, I didn’t know you could use thundershirts for general anxiety, how fantastic! Do they make those for grandchildren :) 5 o’clock is not their shining hour either! Chioe certainly seems to be understanding and sounds like she sincerely wants to be good for her Momma~ just tugs my heart strings~ one of my friends tried this for her dog with no luck, every thunderstorm [and we have A LOT] she had to put her in the guest room with lights blazing, curtains closed and TV full blast…she finally moved to Minnesota!

So tickled to see Chloe’s sweet letter and adorable pictures. She is a gifted writer like her mom! Our precious bichon Barkleigh climbs onto my husband’s head if there’s a storm in the middle of the night! At other times we wrap him securely in a large bath towel and hold him until he stops vibrating.(Several years ago our new vet told us that bichons should only drink distilled water! Have you heard that?) Thank you for all your beautiful tablescapes, lake pictures, doggie stories and recipes. I look forward to every post!

    • May 19, 2014 at 6:43 am

Thanks so much Kathy! This is our second pair of Bichons, I’ve never heard of giving distilled water to them, ours drink good old tap :)

  37. May 18, 2014 at 7:14 pm

We lost our beautiful bichon, Kippy, 3 1/2 years ago. She was with us almost 16 years. If I had known about the thundershirt then, things would have been so much better. Fourth of July and thunderstorms were always a problem. Your Chloe looks so much like our beloved Kippy. Please hug her fo rme.

    • May 19, 2014 at 6:41 am

So sorry to hear that Susan. Chloe & Gracie send doggie hugs & kisses ♥

  38. Kathy Davis
    May 19, 2014 at 7:29 am

The vet said bichons are prone to developing bladder and kidney crystals and stones which Barkleigh did. Hence the distilled water as aiding in prevention/maintenance.

  39. May 19, 2014 at 8:07 am

What a great thing….it is like swaddling right?….Chloe makes up for her “extra energy” by being “cute”….!!..Chloe is is gifted writer like her mom!

  40. May 19, 2014 at 8:17 am

Mary, This sounds like an incredible product! I have had a few cats that would have benefitted from a Thunder Shirt. I might get one for Nellie too as she is terrified of staying outside at my Mom’s house–we don’t know why! Chloe’s face is so adorable. I wouldn’t be able to resist giving her all the attention and food she wanted! Linda

I wondered if this worked. I have two mini doxies and since I have MS and they always threw up in the car we weren’t able to socialize them well. Now the throwing up has stopped but they are afraid of everything. I don’t know if this would work for our pups. It is more fear then anxiety. We are moving into our new house soon and there is going to be more socialization there which will be a very good. Thanks for sharing t his.
