In this indispensable entertaining guide, Michael Devine, a well-known tastemaker, shows how the garden can be a perfect and easily transformable setting to stage enchanted events in every season.

An Invitation to the Garden, Seasonal Entertaining Outdoors by Michael Devine

From the Foreward by Charlotte Moss:

“In his enthusiastic greeting at the door, the festive decoration of the table, and the delicious menu, Michael’s desire to delight his friends is on full display. Whether the settings are casual with color scheme reflected in paper lanterns and bright zinnias, or more formal with walls luxuriously draped in pagoda fabric and a mountain of lilacs on the table, one thing you can be sure of as Michael’s guest: The atmosphere is one of ‘We’re so glad you’re here.’ “

An Invitation to the Garden is a feast for the eyes! You’ll be inspired to have a Lilac Brunch, a Rose Pink Breakfast and an Alfresco Dinner with Hydrangeas!

Butterfly Luncheon, An Invitation to the Garden

I had some table inspiration from the Butterfly Luncheon,

set in summer to coincide with the arrival of the butterflies. . .

Since it’s a little early for dining with butterflies,

I brought some to the table. . .

flatware and glasses. . .

sleeping beauties and serves as a centerpiece.

Mini Arugula and Scallion Pizzas

from Michael Devine’s Butterfly Luncheon menu

provided some Dining with Butterfly inspiration . . .

Fig, Goat Cheese, Prosciutto & Arugula

Ingredients

Box of Puff Pastry
Fig Preserves
Arugula
Goat Cheese
Prosciutto
Butterfly Cookie Cutters

DSC_8780-001

Thaw puff pastry according to box directions.

Heat the oven to 375°F.
Unfold the pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Roll the pastry sheet lightly to remove the fold marks.

Using butterfly cookie cutters, cut shapes for mini pizzas and place on a parchment lined baking sheet.  Prick pastry shapes with a fork several times and place in oven and bake for 10 to 15 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven.

DSC_8777-001

Microwave desired amount of fig preserves until spreadable and can be brushed or spread easily onto puff pastry shapes. Top with goat cheese. You can run the puff pastry back into the oven for 5 additional minutes if desired, or skip this step and proceed to top with prosciutto and arugula.

The combination of flavors makes a satisfying sweet, tangy, salty, peppery bite!

DSC_8782-001

You can top smaller butterflies with just a wee bit of goat cheese and drizzle of fig balsamic glaze. . .

Or brush them with fig preserves before

topping with goat cheese and arugula.

I too love the use of quilts in lieu of a table cloth. Your table settings are always so festive and seasonal!🌷🌺🌻

Beautiful composition, esp. the florals in the butterfly cups!

I was instantly transported to your butterfly garden with the first photos~Your table is perfection, the green butterfly house is adorable and all the butterflies everywhere are totally delightful. The individual flower vases are delicate and the whole table feels like a fairy garden~the book looks like it is full to the brim, and I love the quote about how the settings say “so glad you’re here!” Fig glazed puff pastry butterflies and scallion pizzas with arugula, Wowza!

Mary, what a delight to play with you this week! I love puttering at home with NB projects, but the part I love best is visiting you and Jain. I am always wowed and inspired, and I leave so reluctantly. I just want to play: I’m like a butterfly, drawn to your artistry and divine goodies. You’ve combined beauty, nature, and magic with this stunning tablescape. I love the way you’ve paired wicker chargers with floral china, all of it grounded on that gorgeous quilt. The vases are beyond perfect, filled with individual bouquets. Indeed, you have created a woodland feast. And the butterfly pizzas are the crowning glory. Thank you for filling my heart this morning. Happy NB Garden Week!

FINALLY able to fire up the laptop so i can see your pics big and beautiful and i can expound as long as i like without a tiny cell phone retyping my words 10 times over before they appear to be english. i have been up since 3 am, i have been revisiting you and mlees pics in my head all day as i have been doing system restore at the beach all day long with a truckload filled with plants, picnic materials and garden dishes to put away form the summer, i am still panicking because i have 4 days to cook for and i wonder where i will find the time!

meanwhile lets take in today… so peaceful with the calming affect of a subdivision for butterflies right on your table! i loved his and your interpretation, both fanciful and freeing, but the best part is that giant liquid reflection you and your winged friends get as an extra bonus… heavy sigh! from silverware to goblets they mirror themselves with every wisp of their wings, you do know lantana is one of their very favorite flowers too. of course you do, you have it as a welcome home tucked into their cute little condo~

so glad you saved the best for last, i never like to leave hungry and i feel very satiated with those scrumptious little puffs of heavens, this is so a favorite flavor combo of mine, but even better when it comes with wings… its all so artfully presented right down to the cookies cutters… i so love playing with food, books, flowers and insects!

I’d love to dine at your butterfly-themed table, Mary. The dishes, napkins, napkin rings and centerpiece look so Spring-y and perfect for your delicious bites of artistic food.

Oh Mary what a beautiful post with all that delicious food, table decorations, butterfly’s and flowers. The books look so good I am putting them on my list of things I need or have to have, since I have a Bday coming up soon.
The photo’s are terrific, you really out did your self. Thanks so much. I going back and re-read the post again.

I, too, love the butterflies: on everything and especially the butterfly box! The individual bouquets are exquisite! Are the flowers from your garden??? Everything is perfect and I am looking for those napkin rings!

What a lovely opening post for the NB’s week! I just love the idea of this luncheon. All the theming, right down to the food, is so much fun. Sounds like the book is full of wonderful novel ideas. I think it’s a must-have.

This week is going to be so great…I cannot wait until tomorrow!

  18. May 28, 2014 at 3:42 am

    Stunning!
    Love the butterfly “pizzas”

  19. May 28, 2014 at 9:52 am

    Loving it all…

  20. May 28, 2014 at 11:42 am

Couldn’t leave a comment yesterday, so I’m back for seconds. ‘-)
You know the week of garden posts has me jumping for joy. Your creative food and flower shots are the best. The little bouquets recall memories of my childhood when I’d pluck flowers from my mother’s garden, gather them together to make little bouquets, and then pretend I was a florist. Funny what sparks a long ago memory.
Thanks for the delights, my friend. I’m savoring each post this week!

  21. May 31, 2014 at 12:28 am

Loved the raised or embossed flowers and butterfly on the knife, incredible! Very inspiring and I loved the moment of metamorphosis of round pizzas to mini butterfly pizzas. Your post probably challenges or inspires all of us to think about how to create a more creative post.

So fresh and lovely! One of the best uses of this china that I have seen.

  23. June 4, 2014 at 7:28 am

Hi Mary, After a long, much needed break I was looking forward to catching up on all the NB posts this morning, but I can’t seem to leave this page. Your table is sooooo beautiful. The contrast of the dainty china and the rustic chargers and soft quilt is perfect, and the flowers are calling to me just as the lovely centerpiece is calling the butterflies with its come hither sprig of flowers tucked into the entry. I can see that I need a butterfly house now. And the puff pastry~~yum! How will I ever be good now! I must make these, especially with the fig and goat cheese combo. Oooh, yum again!! I’m going to savor all the NB posts over the next few days. Linda

I am enthralled by it all! Please share where you found the Butterfly cookie cutters. I must have them to try the delicious fig pizzas. I have 3 fig trees & 3 cuttings rooting of a new fig tree that produces awesome tasting figs. Thank you very much for this sharing your beautiful Butterfly Luncheon! Betty

I remember this post but I don’t see my comment so I guess I didn’t leave one! Those Tablescapes are awesome- so full of creativity. The puff pastry butterfly pizzas sound yummy!
