Gone Fishin’ Picnic

I’m joining The Novel Bakers for Picnic Week!

We’ve been busy packing picnic baskets, baking, and cooking up recipes for a couple of months in anticipation of picnic week, from a host of books full of inspiration, delicious menus and theme picnics!

I had some inspiration for a Lakeside Fishing Picnic from

Picnics by Hilary Heminway & Alex Heminway

IMG_2685

“A picnic is classically defined as a meal eaten outdoors on an excursion. But why settle for that when you can experience a Sunset Romance Picnic, a Snowshoe Picnic, or even a Dinner Picnic in Bed? Hilary Heminway and Alex Heminway share dozens of creative ways to take a meal outside, whether the sun is just coming up for the day or romantically dropping in the sky, in the heat of summer or during a winter’s chill. All-season picnics include: Sunset romance, boat on a lake, snowshoeing in the woods, rodeo tailgate, riverside barbecue, horseback riding, dog pack, picnic for children, and rainy day.”

Cucumber-Avocado Soup with Tomato Salsa caught my eye

for a cool summer soup to tote along for a picnic from

Picnics & Tailgates: Good Food for the Great Outdoors (Williams-Sonoma Outdoors)

DSC_2151-001

Creamy avocado and cool cucumber are pureed in a food processor with some chicken broth, lemon juice, sour cream (I substituted Greek yogurt), a little salsa and green onion.

Season with salt & pepper and chill for 2 to 8 hours for flavors to meld.

Garnish with a little salsa, I added some cucumber and parsley to garnish with too, topped with a Goldfish Cracker.

Mary, those cupcakes are too darn cute! The photo on the Lakeside Fishing Picnic book caught my eye. You put a lot of time into these picnics for us to enjoy, so thank you!

This is just wonderful! You always overwhelm us with your attention to detail, Mary! That soup looks tasty. I’ll have to try it. And the cupcakes are darling! What a clever way to decorate them! How does this Novel Bakers concept work? It doesn’t look like it’s a link party. How does one join future events? Is it even possible?

This is such fun, Mary! I love it all.Reminds me…I should bring the minnow bucket back to the apartment for a little fallishness.

Your tablescape is so creative and darling! Love the fish plates!

  8. September 9, 2014 at 8:28 am

You had me reeled in from the first photo of your table on the dock! My favorite all time post of yours was the Christmas tree on the dock decorated with old fishing things and this is a summer version! I can’t believe your husband has his grandfather’s tackle box, that is incredibly special! I think tuna salad packed with pita pockets on the side is such a brilliant picnic idea, as well as the cool creamy soup~your perfect and practical aluminum fish plates are too fabulous in your netted table setting with the minnow bucket! And everyone needs a catch of the day cupcake for dessert! Love love it all Mary!

Mary, I would love to get inside your head someday and see where all these ideas are whirling around–from the cupcake toppings to the goldfish crackers in the soup and the fish eye thirst quencher!! I have been eyeing that soup recipe and your photo makes me want it right now for breakfast! The tackle box is really a treasure and I’m guessing you raided your hubby’s stash for those lures and nets and buckets (although the hole-y one is quite puzzling!). So glad it is Picnic Week! Linda

  10. September 9, 2014 at 9:11 am

Like Another Linda says, I’d love to get inside your head and see where all these ideas originate. You are amazing with your creative versatility. You make me think I’m a little lazy when it comes to taking the next step as I so focus on simple.

oh my freaking goodness, i LOVE THIS! i still remember your fishing tree, but this is even more enticing! the tablecloth alone is genius in your setting… i adore the teak table and chairs too.

isn’t this a fabulous book. i thought it was very creative photography, only to be rivaled by you ;-) OF COURSE YOU WOULD DO THE FISHING THEME! this is truly another one of your masterpieces… dare i say… PICTURE PERFECT?

look at your fish scale pita bread… you are relentless in your detail :-) your photos are always like where is waldo to me, just look for all the hidden nuances, mary will always have it all, subtle, yet perfect~

how did you like the soup? i am scared to heat or puree avocados, its a taste i fear, once you taste an over ripe hot avocado you are scared for life!

look at your dessert… dang you make me smile!

oh i just hate to leave the dock now, that was so darn fun, thanks for keeping the novel bakers wrapped in edible beauty, its always a great day for a picnic now isn’t it!

I’m in, hook, line, and sinker! You do know how to pull off any theme to perfection. I so love visiting your lakeside abode, Mary. The fishnet tablecloth is so clever, and the cupcakes are really cute. I’m sending the idea to my sister for her grands. The details of this picnic are over the top. I need to order a copy of this book. It looks great!

Just adorable! I look to theme my fishing and boating trips! Check out Martha Stewart’s “Chesapeake Bay Snack Mix” ! It’s a big hit! And Pepperidge Farm’s little fish breads make perfect tuna sandwiches! We’re done with scallop season here on the Gulf coast of Florida, and looking forward to cooler days for fishing and bicycling ~ and picnicking! Thanks for the inspiration!

  27. September 10, 2014 at 8:24 am

Your hubby is a lucky man to share a picnic with you, Mary! What a darling lakeside table and the food…oh my! I was drooling and then to find the cute cupcakes at the end. What a finale!! They’re so simple and my grandkids would love it.

  28. September 10, 2014 at 10:20 am

    Amazing….too cute!

  29. September 10, 2014 at 10:32 am

How absolutely CHARMING! I tend to gravitate toward any type of fish dinnerware or serving pieces, so just fell in love with this clever, casual picnic. And now, of course, I’ll be searching the library website for books on picnics. Your posts are always inspirational.

  30. September 11, 2014 at 7:52 am

Cute theme – I love how you carried through so well…especially the Fish Eye wine!! Cupcakes are adorable and your chicken salad looks so tasty – gorgeous setting!

  31. September 16, 2014 at 11:18 am

Mary you always have the most beautiful spreads! Love this theme and I pinned that tuna salad, it looks amazing!

  32. September 21, 2014 at 10:24 pm

Hi, Mary! I’m super late to visit. I’ve been down with really bad continuing back problems. Ugh! NOT my idea of fun, especially when my favorite time of year is rolling in!

This is really terrific! I like each and every element!!! It’s so well done that I don’t think a man would be the least bit intimidated by it. I think he would just shimmy on up to the table – waders and all still intact, of course! – and appreciate the effort and love put into the table! If you’re lucky, he’ll even have a fish or two to grill up and contribute to the spread!

Coriander and fennel in the tuna salad? Sounds good! I’ve never had it that way before. I’m always up for trying a little something new to jazz up that old standby!

    Have a wonderful week!
