I went apple picking at Carrigan Farms, a local
pick-your-own farm in Mooresville, NC.
You can take the kids for an apple hayride. . .
Or they can walk the orchard and drag
their bag of apples behind them. . .
{insert *wince* and *grin* here}
The orchard is open daily in September
to pick Golden and Red Delicious Apples.
Peeking through the cornstalks is encouraged too :)
Barn, silo and beautiful homestead love. . .*sigh*
And tractor love too . . .
In October, Pumpkin Patch Tours and hayrides begin. . .
And on select nights in October Carrigan Farms
turns into. . . Scarrigan Farms. . .
If you’re not tired of picnicking :) you can enjoy an Apple Picnic. . .
with Apple Walnut Salad, Redd’s Apple Ale and
Sweet & Savory Apple Gorgonzola & Thyme Pies.

Oh, Mary! You always delight my senses! What a wonderful excursion and picnic. I want to follow you around and and take in all the beauty of NC. I bought freshly picked French apples at the marché this morning! Trying to eat wisely, but also indulging in petite pastries from time to time. ;-)
What a perfect way to spend a fall day! I thought the same thing you did, I guess the mother of the little guy with the bag was making apple sauce as soon as she got home:@)
This post reminds me of Eckert’s Orchards in Illinois. We used to go over there every Fall to pick apples. We crossed the Mississippi via ferry. The g’kids love that! We would spend the entire day in IL. So much fun! It’s been a few years since we did the apple pickin’ trip. Great memories!

Thank you Mary for all the sweet memories. When I was growing up in New Mexico (and well into adulthood) we would go to Dixon’s to get apples. They were in a lovely little canyon and it was a treat to visit. All the great apples and apple cider with lots of places to picnic. Nothing like apple picking to get the Fall started!
Now that’s how I like to wake up… joyful moments! You got so many wonderful shots. Again I miss country living :-( it’s not often I wish to be elsewhere, but your pics stir embers of home.

Good Morning to all! Mary, you really know how to stir up memories of long ago..We took two of our grandchildren for a similar outing when they were young, even Grammy and Grandpa came along. We all went on the hayride through the designated roads on the farm. Grammy ended up buying a bushel to make applesauce. I loved the picture of the little girl who was in fashion with her boots on..Watch out for the bees hovering around the apples on the ground and hope nobody gets stung picking up one of those apples. Were any of those kids in the pictures any of your children, or grandchildren? We have several farms in the county that does the same thing at pumpkin picking time..The farm we took our grandchildren and grandparents was in another county, but neighboring ours. I used to help Grammy make applesauce..it takes a lot of sugar though. I kept the sieve that we pressed the cooked apples through for memories’s sake. Thanks for sharing your wonderful blog with everybody. It always seems to make my day.
To Pat@BackPorchMusings – we frequent Eckert’s Orchards in Illinois and the Mississippi river ferries too! Can’t help but imagine what it would be like to be Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer whenever we are midway across the river on the ferry! Thanks for the memory jog! I would if only I had a place to go :(. Sadly in the Deep South we have no picking orchards. In fact, I only saw an orchard for first time in my life a few yrs ago on trip to WA state… and I’m waaaaay old! Beautiful relaxing pics!

Thank you, Mary, for the tour, and for showing us another great place to pick apples. At 64, and with the kids all grown, I still love to capture the wonderful feeling of picking my own…just something about being out in the fresh air with it’s sensory infusing moments that beats the grocery store hands down. We live in southeastern PA., just over the DE. line, but my oldest son and his wife live in Charlotte, so we venture all around the area antique hunting and such whenever we visit.You are so lucky to live on Lake Norman, and it’s so close to little quaint towns that we love. I am new to your blog, and looking forward to making your posts a fun part of my days. Have a great one.

Fun day at the apple farm!
I enjoyed reading The Apple Orchard by Susan Wiggs…I was ready to open a little shop just like at the end of the book…
We go every year with the gkids. It is down by the ocean, so you get nice ocean breezes while you pick. They have at least 10 varieties which come in at different times. Unfortunately, the prices have skyrocketed. In 1990 it was $10 for a bag which holds about 20 lbs. It is up to $45! We may skip it this year. With 5 of them picking it takes all of 10 min to fill the bag.
Love your picnic, everything looks delicious! I bought NY state apples at the market for .69 a lb. and found a very interesting recipe I am going to try tomorrow!

What a lovely excursion! You’ve captured the essence of the quintessential autumn day, Mary, with your beautiful photos & descriptive prose. I laughed out loud at the little boy dragging his apple bag….applesauce indeed.
We’ve done the same thing every fall with our grands but this year, the oldest has gone away to college. It won’t be the same without him. :-( These are the memories of a lifetime & must be snatched & held fast, as the time is so fleeting.

We have never gone apple picking:( What a great day out! The pigtails, outfit and boots on the little girl stole my heart! The PICNIC looks wonderful as well!
