Dressing up the Potting Shed with Vintage Garden Tools

DSC_4657-001

I’ve been looking for something to plant above the porch roof of my Potting Shed to add some additional curb appeal.

DSC_3580-001

The triangular space was a bit of a challenge, with the space broken up by a gable vent. The gable vent was fashioned from repurposed floor grates. I wanted to add something to hang to complement the vintage feel and charm of the floor grates and the rusted metal roof.

I was looking for an architectural salvage piece that would fit the space, but everything I found was pricey and better suited for indoors since it wouldn’t have any protection from the elements.

I ran across a stash of old sign letters recently. The price was right and I found the three letters I was looking for.

I’m a sucker for anything “old garden” and I have an assortment of well-worn tools I’ve collected over time.

My hubby hung a set of three hand tools above the gable vent.

And a pair of vintage garden shears on either side of “pot”.

A pitchfork and a rake fill in the space between the roof and the letters.

Un très joli coin de jardin où il doit être agréable de s’isoler.
J’adore les cabanes de fond de jardin.
    Amicalement.

Love love love what you did, I was worried when I read the first sentence or two about planting up there. Sometimes we will plant anywhere we can. It does look fantastic and adds such a nice decorative touch. One of these day I will have a garden shed, but not as grand as yours. I love yours. BTW, I received the jar glasses yesterday and I do love them. Thank you again.

Good morning Mary…love your newest additions. I would be tempted to paint the handles the same red as the door for just a little more pop….or even the letters….no matter what it still is lovely to look at! ❤️

Oh Mary, This is just adorable. What an imagination you have. Thank you for sharing. I can hardly wait for the house I’m moving to in my home town is finished. I have a garden shed there but of course needs tons of updating and decorating. My Dad and I are going to add a little porch, paint it, and various other things. It will be a Father/Daughter Project. I love it when we have our time together. He has taught me so many things thru the years and continues to do so every day. I will send you pictures before we start so if you will help me out with suggestions, that would be wonderful. I will have a pond view, but I call it a small lake.. :):).

Thanks Patricia! What fun you’ll have with your potting shed and with your pond view too!

Mary, Those are wonderful letters! I wonder where they were hanging originally? I have recently been looking through old tools, both garden and hardware, from my dad and grandfather and thinking about all the hours they were held and used. Some of the wooden handles are worn totally smooth and the metal ones are distressed in a way that can’t be duplicated. Your handy hubby did a great job! Linda

    • July 31, 2015 at 3:08 pm

I love the patina and untold history of old tools too Linda! My grandfather was a farmer, I wish I had a few of his :)

Too darn cute!….As always, you are so very creative and when you have a vision you set out to accomplish it so beautifully!…Your flowers are amazing. I have to baby the few that I have with this heat…the window boxes are flourishing. It is always a real treat to start off my day to see the wonderful things that you do to your amazing potting shed.

Mary, love your shed so much!! Great idea too! I show your pictures to my hubby every time you do something to the shed and all I get is “that’s nice”.. Grrr!! Maybe one of these days I’ll have one and can show mine off a bit!! But, jealous or not, I still love looking at yours. 😍😍😍

  11. July 31, 2015 at 7:53 am

What a cute addition you chose for the front of the potting shed, Mary. Your hubby is a gem to do all the labor, as love for you. You make a great pair! Happy weekend to you on the lake! Hope Chloe and Gracie get some pontooning fun.

I’m generally not an envious person BUT, Mary your potting shed has brought out the “evil” in me. It is just too cute. AND, Patricia, now I’m envious of you! I’m sure that having pictures of Mary’s shed will certainly be an inspiration to you.

Mary, about how many hours a day do you spend to keep your flowers looking so well groomed? I know it’s a labor of love, but it does take time.

    • July 31, 2015 at 3:06 pm

Thanks so much Betty! I’m usually outside watering and puttering around for an hour and half in the mornings to try and beat the heat. It’s still hot then :)

I love visiting you, it is always a treat to see what you have been up to!!! This is adorable. I have searched for vintage garden tools all summer and can’t find any:( Where do you find yours? Love the letters, great idea!!! Have a wonderful weekend!!

    • July 31, 2015 at 3:28 pm

Thanks Pinky, I’ve collected the tools over the years but found the garden shears recently at a favorite antique mall for $6 each. Hope Joe is pain-free and will be up and around like normal soon!

Your potting shed really is the ultimate play house – always creative, clever and fun. I love it.

  22. July 31, 2015 at 12:42 pm

Have to say the new additions are right on for added appeal, not that this beauty was lacking Curb Appeal. All those beautiful blooming plans make this gardener here in HOT Texas squeal with delight. My sun garden is struggling to just be green. Not much in bloom. I’m deadheading dead leaves! ;-)
Kudos to your husband for braving the ladder to add these charmers.

    • July 31, 2015 at 3:23 pm

Thank you Sarah! It’s hot as blazes here. We’ve had August weather since June and it’s dry. I’m not sure how much longer I can keep lugging my hose around :)

  23. July 31, 2015 at 1:38 pm

I love how you always think outside the box…Some people think less is more…but when your wonderful ideas are carried out, instead of gilding the lily, the results are like Goldilocks would have said…”just right”.

Treasure that hubby…he is a one in a million gem!

    • July 31, 2015 at 3:24 pm

Thank you Sonia! I’ve always been a ‘more is more’ kinda girl :)

Love it! I’m dreaming about converting our storage barn into my own personal garden haven. I’ve been inspired by yours for some time! Love the old pitch fork and hoe. All your plants look wonderful!

    • July 31, 2015 at 3:25 pm

Thanks Liz, I know your storage barn would be blooming with beauty if you do!

  26. July 31, 2015 at 2:44 pm

I LOVE your potting shed, I’d love one. The old tools, etc add sooo much to it. Once I had a bunch of old tools and when I moved in with my hubby I had a garage sale and an antique dealer practically stole them from me. :-( live and learn I guess.

    • July 31, 2015 at 3:17 pm

Hi Linda, I feel your pain! I sold garden accessories and gifts in my shoppe and had some beautiful display pieces including a wonderful gate, 2 old doors, a porch swing and a cupboard with a wonderful painted patina. When we sold our business I got rid of all it which I really regret…*sigh*

Hi, Mary! Well, you’ve done it again! Improved upon perfection, that is….just when you needed them, those letters popped up for you…and you knew just what to do with them! You must have a “garden Angel” for real… (along with tons of talent, that is!)…

I always love your posts and I use the adorable galvanized carrier all the time (I won it from you…remember?). I silently thank you again each time I use it! And that Fairy Cake….mmmmmmmm!

Would you mind sharing the name of the color you used on your green-shed trim and garden accessories? I have a few touches of garden-green painted things around my garden, but would love to incorporate a few more. I realize that colors in photos appear different from the real thing, but I love the softness of the shade you’re using.

      • August 1, 2015 at 2:01 pm

Thanks for your kind comments Marie {blush}. Yes, I remember, I’m glad you’ve enjoyed your picnic caddy!
The green trim paint color is Sherwin Williams Inland (SW6452). Enjoy your weekend :)

Can I borrow your husband for about a week?!? Haha! I have lots of great jobs like hanging some items off my garage! You make a great pair with all the wonderful things you do. Thanks for sharing with all of us!

  31. August 2, 2015 at 6:43 pm

Wow, this looks just like it should have been there all along! Great job to both of you!!

  32. August 3, 2015 at 4:49 pm

That is really artsy! I just love it!

  33. August 3, 2015 at 7:16 pm

How Cute!!!! Great idea, Mary….you know how to make anything look awesome. I have a question that might be crazy but I wanted to know. What is that metal strip on the peak of roof? We have a metal roof on our garden shed and it was leaking in the spring. We have fixed the leak but I was wondering if we should have this on ours.

    • August 3, 2015 at 8:17 pm

Hi Nancy, The strip along the ridge of the roof is wood that’s stained and it’s purely decorative :)

  34. August 4, 2015 at 9:12 am

Oh man I loved the before but hanging those tools horizontal makes it look bigger and better! My first visit and I’ll be following :) (Stopped by from Inspire Me Tuesday)

I hope you don’t want to throw rocks at me, but you’ve given me ideas for our building we have in our back yard. I’ve got lots of old hand me down tools and they are perfect for my husband a project to add to the outside of our shed. I already have a garden that he has planted that I can add to since your post of all your plants that I just love has given me a great idea……Thank you for your help.

    • August 22, 2015 at 5:07 am

Hi Ingrid, I think that’s a great way to use and display your old tools! Enjoy your weekend :)
