Dog Days:
1. The hot, sultry days of summer when Sirius, the Dog Star, rises in the constellation Canis Major.
2. A period marked by lethargy, inactivity, or indolence.
We’re feeling lethargic in the Dog Days of Summer and it’s dog gone hot and dry here.
Our lake level is down 5 feet from full pond and our county has we’ve moved into the severe drought category in North Carolina.
Our lowest step on our dock hasn’t been exposed and out of the water since 2008, the last time we had extreme drought conditions.
Chloe’s trying to understand why she can’t play her favorite game of Paw, Splash, Drink, Repeat . . .
And wondering where all the water went.
Gracie says, “Lethargy is my middle name and it’s kinda relaxing to sit and listen to the waves lapping against the shore.”
Hope you’re finding ways to survive the dog days of summer. . .
We’re keeping our paws crossed for a good steady rain or a pop up thunderstorm or two. :)

Sorry to hear you are having a bad drought..we on the other hand are finally drying out!! The rain is good but we had way too much and if you see how dull the flowers and greenery look, I think too much of the nutrients have been washed from the soil. Sometimes there is no happy medium..hopefully, things will turn around. Meanwhile, we are working outside early to avoid the heat, then we head inside to the air condtioning, then when the sun starts going down, back out to the screened in porch!! Have a great Sunday!! Unfortunately we are praying for rain where I’m at. Leaves are falling from trees it’s so dry, grass is brittle, and we pulled out kayaks around the river yesterday rather than paddle. It is hot (90), it’s humid, and Fall can’t come soon enough for me🍂

I heard on our local news that Lake Lanier here is almost five feet low, too, but it is a huge body of water. It was over 20 feet low a few years ago when we were in a severe drought. It looked awful. Our front yard that we do not water because it would cost a mere fortune is looking bad from lack of rain, but it looks like we have a lot on the way this week. I will send it your way. :)
Your pups are so cute! Drought can be so trying…we had record rainfall in the Spring then it dried up and we’ve only had one little shower in almost two months. Sigh, everything is burnt to a crisp and the daily watering of plants is wearing me down. Hurry Fall!
We were having severe drought conditions a couple of years ago. We’ve had rain all Summer, with flooding this year. I think we have caught up, but it has taken awhile.

I am SO over summer. Done. Finito. We have had 105-107 temps for over a month. Humidity so high you can hardly catch a breath. NO rain for over a month. Our lake levels as low as Chloe’s. All of my plants are burned to a crisp. Even if u water them everyday, they just can’t take the heat. SO. OVER. SUMMER.
Yearning for crisp cool days…but alas, here in Deep South, we won’t feel that till end of sept. How dare Hobby Lobby put all that fall stuff out already!

Hot, dry and 90+ degree days for months now here in Oregon! We did have a slight reprieve Friday night…a tiny spit of rain…at least the dust settled a bit. This is unusual for us…for the first time I am actually looking forward to the end of summer!
The picture of your husband sitting on the dock and gazing wistfully at the lake is just great. The dog is very puzzled. You really do take great photos Mary.
Here in central Ohio summers can bring anything from tornados, hail and drought with scorching temperatures. At present it is a balmy 80 deg. With a possibly of a thunderstorm this afternoon. Allergies abound!
I am so not looking forward to winter, but love autumn in all its glory.
Our house is on Clear Lake and you’ve probably heard of the fires going on here. Luckily the winds have been in our favor. With everything so dry and with the drought we would love to see some rain.
Hot and dry herein Utah. Seems everyone around us gets a little rain but not my house. Praying for rain for us both.
Awww, thank you for sharing Chloe and Gracie. Those girls are just too darn cute! Are they litter mates? We here in GA are extremely dry, however, we are supposed to get some rain this coming week….I will try to push them your way!
Thanks for the adorable Dog Days photos. Here in Northern North Carolina we have had sufficient rain. It is a beautiful day in Hertford on the Perquimans River. We are sailors and have had wonderful weather for enjoyable sails on the River recently. Nothing like watching the water go by from my screened porch. Have a great day.

It’s dog gone hot and dry here in Texas and we haven’t had any rain in weeks. I’m sure hoping we get some soon.

It is very hot and humid here for the time being…our trade winds have left us in the wake of Hurricane-turned-Tropical-Storm-Hilda that at the last minute decided to not pass over land (thank G–) but dumped lots of rain on our island…for which I am very grateful…our year-to-date rain gauge is beginning to catch up to what is our usual normal…not quite there yet, but fairly close!
LOVE the pic of the tail in motion Mary:@) We’re warm and humid but have gotten intermittent good soaking rains, so all is as well as can be in August in Philly!
Talk about a picture is worth a thousand words Mary! Your photos certainly portrayed the sadness and frustration your family is feeling in this time of drought~ I wish I could send some rain your way, we had buckets full all day on the coast yesterday and much the same today~ It’s also been a cool 75 and breezy, definitely not August weather on the Alabama Gulf Coast, but I appreciate every cool breeze and rain drop. I will do a major rain dance for you, seeing your beautiful lake recede is heart breaking…

Just returned from a few days in Santa Fe where it was delightfully cool with the occasional thunderstorm in the late afternoon. Sad to see your lake down. Our early summer rains have helped restore our lake levels. It was a treat to see them from the sky today as we flew into Austin. They have been drastically low for years. In fact, I was doubtful I’d ever see them full again.

Hoo Baby! I feel like I am in the Rainmaker movie with Burt and Kathrine…. Been a very long time since California has had rain of any sort of usefulness. I guess we are burning up all over the state. Can’t see the Sierras……… And low lakes, Ugg Uggg UGGGGG! Our lawn is gone, as is most every ones, we covered ours up in 9″ thick chips. And planting, with drip, ceanothos and manzanita and other drought tolerant non thirsty natives. It is Epic. I am now hearing “El Nino” everywhere, let us pray for the weather child or Burt’s magic drum………………..
Lake still looks good to me! Hot here in SoCal. More fires that not! In every direction. Temps as high as 106. Unless you consider Palm Springs which is almost 120. And no ran in sight. We will see what El Nino does. But watch the news in Feb. All those areas that burned will be sliding down the hills!! More pictured for the lake!! I feel cooler just looking at them
My husband, daughter and I had lunch yesterday at the Rusty Rudder on Lake Norman. It’s sad to see the lake so low. I didn’t realize Lake Norman was in a severe drought category. Seeing the LKN makes me believe it!!!

Hot, hot, hot and dry, dry, dry….We had one good rain last week, for a short while….I noticed Jordan Lake is down too…We remain on water restrictions since the last big drought many years ago. Hope Chloe can do her Paw, Splash, Drink, repeat soon!…
I’m in Eastern Kansas and the lake we go to in Missouri was 21 feet high at the beginning of July. We went at the end of July and it was still 14 feet high and we had to use a John boat to get our stuff to the dock because the water was past the end of the walkway and it was about five feet deep right there! We went again in August and it was down enough to use the walkway. They have been letting it out but it is a Corp of Engineers lake so they monitor it as it goes into another lake that was high also. I have loved this wet summer- we are starting to dry out now and have a few patches of dry grass. But my plants have done so well with the wet spring. I hope you get some rain soon- we have had dry summers the past four or so, so this is a welcome relief. The temperatures are high though and it is very humid so that isn’t fun. Love the dogs on the dock. They are adorable.
