But if you’re a dog owner, everyday is paws for celebration. :)

National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate, Colleen Paige. It’s celebrated August 26th every year to encourage dog ownership of all breeds, mixed and pure, and embraces the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe and “abuse-free life”.

The National Dog Day Foundation supports all breeds and varieties of dogs and discourages purchasing from unethical backyard breeders and puppy mills; instead, supporting reputable breeders or adopting from rescue homes.

The goal of the National Dog Day Foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs each year.

We got Chloe and Gracie from the same breeder 10 years ago. We joke about Chloe being our “rescue” dog, since she’s so high maintenance chances are another family would have traded her in for a less neurotic dog a long time ago.

If you have a neurotic dog, I recommend trying ThunderShirt. . . and wine helps too :)

Celebrate National Dog Day by taking your dog for a ride. . .

Freekibble.com was launched in 2008, as the vision of then 11 year-old, Mimi Ausland. Mimi wanted to feed the hungry dogs and cats at her local shelter. “There are 10’s of thousands of dogs and cats in animal shelters across the country, all needing to be fed a good meal.” With this goal in mind, Freekibble was created.

Today, the Freekibble Network reaches over 500,000 passionate pet-lovers. This loyal community has helped feed over 14 million meals to homeless dogs and cats in shelters, rescues and food-banks across the country.

Happy Dog Day to Chloe and Gracie! It’s always wonderful to see those two; they must be a joy to have around. I also have 2 bundles of joys myself, Stoogie and Churhill (English Bulldogs) that fill my heart with wonder daily. Animals are just blessed gifts! Thanks for the pics and bringing a smile to everyone’s heart <3

Mary, thank you so much for bringing National Dog Day to everyone’s attention. I cannot imagine a life without a dog. Your babies are precious and very lucky pooches. Every dog deserves the life those two lead. Love your blog. I wish you were my neighbor. But, through blogland we can enjoy lots of far away friends—and their pets. Thanks for daily “making my day”.

  12. August 26, 2015 at 8:28 am

Happy Dog Day to the two cuties Chloe and Gracie! I see that they have chosen a great chair as their favorite place to nap!

  13. August 26, 2015 at 8:31 am

Chloe and Gracie won the lottery when you brought them home Mary, they are definitely living the life of royalty not dogs with boat rides, homemade treats, picnics and a seasonal wardrobe! Again, you could write a book, with Chloe and Gracie narrating their daily antics :) Thanks for sharing all the good that is being done for the shelter dogs, and the need for support, the Freekibble is incredible. Your two little puff balls have so much personality that you capture so well with your magic camera~ I especially love Chloe & Gracie’s favorite fall things collage at the end

It is such a delight to see your girls ‘smiling’ whenever you photograph them running to you. Muffy, the Welsh Terror says thanks for the frosty paws recipe!!

Mary, Thank you for sharing this special occasion to celebrate our beloved companions. I always love seeing your posts in my inbox and love your girls. Our Hunter came from a breeder, but I believe she was a hobby breeder. He has been perfect for us and I celebrate him daily. I’m sharing one of the quotes you used on my blog.
    Have a wonderful fall day!

Happy National Dog Day to Chloe and Gracie. Sadie and I started the morning off with a nice long walk with a little recent cool front that blew in last night. Then she had a little extra doggie treat upon our return. Enjoy a beautiful day Chloe and Gracie!

Everyday is dog day in our house with our two, the loves of our lives. Reeses our boy needs the thundershirt but when we bought it, it didn’t look like yours. Ours had tons of ve!cro and a million strips. Where did you get yours? Also, is it like that. We didn’t see trying to wrap a dog afraid of everything with it. Any help would be appreciated

THANK YOU for buying purebreds from a reputable breeder. I have spent my entire life surrounded by purebred show champions, well-bred and genetically tested, who have–thank God–lived long and healthy lives.
While I applaud anyone who opens their home to a stray or rescue dog, I do resent people who attempt to make me feel guilty because I have bred and raised champion purebreds my entire life. I have been accosted in pet stores and told “I am part of the problem”. (Do these people all opt out of breeding their own kids and have nothing but adopted children??) The straw that broke the came’ls back (and prompted this vent) was last week when I listened to a woman at the grocery store break down in tears because the staff at the local shelter berated her for being selfish when she brought her beloved dog, afflicted with liver cancer, to be euthanised. She was a single mother raising three kids and had maxed her credit cards trying to save her dog, and could not afford any more. How about trying to help her instead of adding guilt to her grief?
National Dog Day Foundation rightly steers the moderate course–buy from a reputable breeder or rescue from a reputable shelter. The most important thing, which you have so aptly stated, is that all dogs should live an “abuse-free life”.
Long live Chloe & Grace and their lovely Mom & Dad!

  24. August 26, 2015 at 10:44 pm

Happy National Dog Day. My girl was rescued and she is the best girl I could ask for.

  25. August 26, 2015 at 11:15 pm

They both are so precious! Buddy, our cocker spaniel / black Lab mix sends his thanks and love as well. We live in the country and someone dropped Buddy off and I can’t imagine why as he is such a precious dog. My neighbor rescued him and within a week he was ours. It’s been 5 years of constant love and companionship. We are blessed. Thanks for informing us of National Dog Day!
