Thank you for all your emails and concerns about rising waters with the rain we’ve had the past two weeks.
We were fortunate to get much-needed rain without the flooding that affected South Carolina, especially in Columbia and Charleston, our favorite weekend getaway.
We went from a low of a 93.6 lake level reading (100 being full pond) and our neighbors’ dock no longer floating on September 24th to this. . .
A 97.4 reading as of this morning, almost 4 feet up and our normal lake level this time of year.
We had another rainy day yesterday and are no longer under a drought advisory.
We’re greening up again and our leaves look like they’ll turn color on schedule. . .
Instead of falling off crispy brown from stress and lack of water.
It’s shaping up to be a beautiful day here with Carolina blue skies.

We love the Low Country and we were saddened to see the flooding.
I took photos of Bagnell Dam at Lake of the Ozarks on the 4th of July. The gates were open, due to flooding north of the lake.
Having lived near the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers plus smaller rivers and creeks, for a very long time, over 70 years for J, we’ve seen the devastation of flooding many times. In ’93 there was a 500 year flood along the rivers. We pass through the Chesterfield Valley often. That area is restored and bigger and better levees have been built and are in constant updating, hoping it doesn’t happen again.
Isn’t it amazing how the drought can be reversed so quickly? I know you’re thankful for the rain and the lake level returning to normal, Mary. Maybe you, your hubby and Chloe and Gracie will be out on the boat enjoying the gorgeous scenery? Happy Sunday to you!

Mary, this is good news. It’s amazing how quickly a lake can fill with rains such as you all have had in recent weeks. Lake Travis is up once again since the Memorial Day storms. It’s a mixed blessing though when so many lost lives and property with those rain storms. I’ve been following the news on the Charleston flood.
Has Lake Norman ever had a history of flooding?

So glad you are safe up there. Lake Murray got extremely high 359.7 I believe out of full stage of 360. Highest it’s been in a very long time! It’s currently down to 359.1. They’re having to keep it high in order to not add more water down river in Columbia. Our flooding here has been devastating Please add Columbia, Charleston and all the little towns in between here in SC to your prayer list everyone because faith is the only thing getting people through this nightmare Thank you Mary #SCStrong. #SCProud.

So glad your lake levels are getting back to normal.
When my son moved to Hawai’i 23 years ago, he said that one of his reasons to move to the area near the ‘wettest city on earth [Hilo]) was water…He was living in Atlanta at the time and the levels of the Chattahoochee River – the main water supplier to that city – were already getting low.
He strongly believes, and stated at the time, that the fight for water right controls was on the way…it took 20 years, but it has already started in areas of California and other states.
We have been experiencing drought conditions in Hilo – and the East side of the island, which is normally the wettest side- thank goodness we’ve been receiving some much needed rain and are catching up to our normal year-to-date rain levels.
I was relieved to hear the happy news that your lovely lake is back to normal for this time of the year, especially without flooding. Enjoy your lovely views….
So glad that you all are safe and that the Lake is at normal now. Feel so bad for all the people in So Carolina. They have lost everything and looks like they are in for more flooding.
In SO CA we are experiencing extremely high triple digit temperatures. The drought is worse than ever.
So I don’t go out much only when I have to.
Trees are looking good with the leaves changing colors.

Your photos show your good news very well. It is amazing how quickly a lake can rise, but it’s the rivers and streams rising so quickly that seem to bring the devastating floods in our area. We need rain; it hasn’t rained more than a trace at my house in about two months.

i have been eager to see how fast and full you were getting, amazing reprieve for you! it looks watery and wonderful, you and girls must be thrilled. a little terrifed about our winter, the hype for a killer winter has me a wreck for both houses, i only hope we can end the drought and still manage to have both homes without mudslides :-(

We live in the Great Lakes area, and sometimes forget how water issues are affected across the country. Water is our most important natural resource. Hope you can enjoy the boat for a few more weeks now. Glad you are safe, Sandi

It is beautiful there Mary! I am so glad you were not affected like SC. My sister is in Wilmington and saw quite a bit of water…in her yard…but fortunately it drained off and don’t ruin anything. My heart goes out to my SC friends…it is just awful there! Hugs to the girls!
