Halloween is the time of year when everyday objects can be transformed to appear a little spooky. . .and seen in a whole new light.
I gave my lanterns a spooky incarnation for Halloween a couple of years ago inspired by a lantern I had seen while shopping.
I found a pad of Brenda Walton Haunted Papers at Michaels that were double-sided~ two images on each page, twice the scare :)
I slipped a piece of glass out of the tab holders in my lantern to use as a template.
You could make a cardboard template if your glass won’t slip out or to prevent breaking it.
I slid the cut pages down into the tabs of the lantern against the glass~ adding a little double-sided tape to keep the pages flat against the glass.
I added a double-sided page on two opposite sides of each lantern, providing light and spooky ambiance using LED candles. You could use a vellum or acetate paper for a more ghostly illumination.
Add a raven and some ribbon. . .and a spider or two if you dare. . .
Fast forward three years and my lanterns are looking a little decrepit, weathered from the elements . . .
A cracked pane, a broken hinge and rust. . .
I found Martha Stewart Crafts Gothic Lace Window and Mirror Clings, conjured from the aisles of Michaels. . .a short broom ride away. <|:>)
Reusable spider clings adhere to glass surfaces and the lantern panes.
Add some addition spooky additions for some haunted lantern fun. . .
With ghostly white pumpkins, glittery spiders, leaves and twigs. . .
Spooky lanterns and a little Halloween life for lanterns that were destined for the graveyard in their decrepit state!
Your clever and beautiful blog never ceases to bring joy to my day. I admire your efforts, and you bring just a touch of rural to someone in a quite cosmopolitan area. Oh, to have a neighbor like you to drop in on and share a cup of coffee. Thank you for providing something perhaps almost as good! Happy autumn to you!
Oh Oh my! What frightfully, wonderful ideas…and to save a lantern from the trash..that’s the best!! I hate throwing anything away..love it all, love it all and thank you for the invite, I’ll be there!! Thanks also for sharing!! 🎃🎃🎃👀👀👀💀💀💀
The spooky lanterns look hauntingly welcoming for all witches, Mary. Thanks for the product tips from Michaels, to spruce up old or new lanterns. I love the witches shoes at the end of your post, and of course your potting shed all decked out in Halloween decor.
Mary, you are forever up to something clever and creative. I think I think my old lanterns to the thrift store last spring in my frenzy to purge and get the house ready for the market. Ha! I’m feeling a tad frustrated these days with so much packed and in storage. Wish a crystal ball could tell me what the plans are.
Love the idea of the paper inserts. Spooky! Glad to see you will be at the tea party. Fun!
Totally love your lanterns…hope they will pass the ‘spooky’ test for next year…grandbaby really drew the line this year on what was spooky or not…so we have pumpkins and spiders and that’s it!…Love your ideas! Thanks, Sandi
How cute and spooooookkkkkky your shed is. I love it! What a great idea for the lanterns.
