It’s a time of transition weather wise here in North Carolina. We haven’t had our first frost yet and some of the summer annuals and flowers are still blooming.
I gave my window boxes on the Potting Shed a touch of fall color with a quick fix and the addition of a pumpkin and some foliage.
I removed the coleus that had gotten leggy and trimmed back the hole-ridden leaves of the sweet potato vine. I also cut the last purple blooms from the Angelonia.
I placed the pumpkin where the coleus was and added some leaves for a celebration of fall color.
I stuck the stems and leaves directly into the soil to join the remaining plants.
The soil works as a wet floral foam does in a flower arrangement and supports the stems while providing some moisture.
It’s been very wet here for over a week so the color and leaves will stay vibrant a little longer without drying out and last a little longer than they normally would.
I can replace them and enjoy a little fall color until I’m ready to plant some evergreens and deck the halls with boughs of holly!
I cut some red dogwood branches . . .
And gold lespedeza.
Some crimson burning bush. . .
To join the asparagus fern that’s still thriving and the occasional lantana bloom.
Hope you’re enjoying a little fall color and sunshine. . .
Rumor has it we’ll see some sunshine for the first time in two weeks tomorrow :)
Mary, my friend that introduced me to your blog is coming for the nite tonite. Would you mind if we road down your road for her to see your potting shed. She wants to build one and is so in love with yours. If you don’t want us to, feel free to say no. We won’t even get out of the car if you would prefer. Thanks for even considering.
Our Indian summer was this past week temps in the mid 70’s. Will be having seasonably temps basically in the 50’s, our leaves have fallen. The window boxes of fall and the pumpkins add that pop of color that your eye wanders to. Mary thank you for your blogs, I enjoy them so much.
Oh Mary, your window boxes are just bursting with Fall colors, and I love the addition of pumpkins and fall branches. I removed my coleus and begonias from my boxes and replaced with pansies and kale.
Happy weekend to you!
All of my favorite colors… except maybe blue and green the rest of the year! Have yet to walk my garden, fall has appeared a wee bit, but I think several more weeks before I am wowed, fun to enjoy yours.
It all looks very autumnal, Mary! Beautiful changes!
We’ve been blessed with some very mild weather & actually hit a new record high for Nov.1st. yay! I know the snows will come but in the meantime I’m enjoying our pretty fall colors. Thanks for sharing yours as well.
Oh they look so pretty Mary! And fresh, like a blooming spring arrangement, except with the perfect fall colors! After 3 weeks of summer time weather on the coast we came home to a yard knee deep in leaves, gray skies and now a weekend of rain ahead…I wish you could work your magic at my house! How smart to just stick the stems in the soil like an oasis~ the pumpkin looks proud as a peacock sitting among those brilliant leaves!

That looks great Mary! I’ve had to dispose of all mine and tuck things away in preparation for winter. It’s been a fabulous week of warm weather up here but today we’re back to rainy weather. November is fickle!
Mary, Your first photo has exactly captured the colors outside my window right now! Even your window box red is perfect for fall. So gorgeous!!! Believe it or not, we haven’t had a real hard freeze here in CT yet either, so the trees still have all their leaves and my roses are blooming. It’s in the high 60s today. I love this “North Carolina” style weather and think I might love living there too! Your shed boxes are just beautiful and have given me some joy this morning. Linda
autumn is my favorire season (with spring a VERY close second!) i love the ‘fall’ colors. (however, i find that i am actually now ready for some ‘ever-greenery’ .. even though, i am not looking forward to a cold Ohio winter. thanks for all you share miz mary!
I am so late getting here cause I have been SICK all day and sleeping most of the day too. Your window boxes are just beautiful. I will be pinning this! We are losing the leaves on our trees, the colors are fading now:( So sad to see the colors go. Thanks so much for sharing this beauty! I miss the 9 window boxes I had at the other house so live vicariously through you now:):) Have a glorious weekend!
Your window boxes are toe twitching gorgeous!! I LOVE Fall and live on the West coast, how fun to spend some time on the East coast and experience the changing of the seasons. Lucky you, thanks for the beautiful sampling.
Very pretty, I need to tweak the front table on the porch, because it is so dead looking. This is beautiful…and doesn’t add any $$ when you use clippings, Thanks, for the idea, Sandi
Looking at your beautiful window boxes brightened my day. Lost a wonderful friend of 35 years this week. Enjoy your blog so much. In fact it is the only blog I read.
