I’m at the table with warm plaid layers and pumpkins in anticipation of Thanksgiving! It’s the last hurrah for fall leaves and pumpkins and we’re thankful for our mild weather in November, allowing us to dine outdoors and enjoy the soft golden light of fall.
The Thanksgiving countdown has begun which I know for many is actually the countdown to the Christmas season. While most folks are all ready making Christmas preparations, this is the time of year that I like savor and enjoy the last bit of fall.
While I enjoy decking the halls, 20+ years spent in retail purchasing Christmas merchandise in January, unpacking it in July to stock the shelves by September, can make you feel a little “bah, humbug” by the time November has arrived :). I’m thankful to have the time to enjoy each season as it comes these days.
I added a throws at each chair at the table, taking my cue from a favorite restaurant in the North Carolina mountains that we enjoy dining at in the fall. We always request to sit outside on the porch that overlooks a stream. They have outdoor heaters and provide blankets for your lap on request for a cozy touch if you’re chilled while dining.
With pumpkin season winding down, I used tiger striped pumpkins for mini vases at the table for each place setting.
You can cut your mini pumpkins, scooping out the flesh to make a vase for your flowers or use a short cut and easy method of adding a piece of foam on top for your flowers.
I filled the mini pumpkins with mums and hypernicum berries from the grocery store along with leaves, rosemary, and abelia and loropetalum sprigs, snipped from the shrubs.
A proud Tom turkey struts his stuff on the plates. His soft colors of brown with a touch of blue on the feathers and on the rim of the plate, set the palette for the table with a blue matelasse coverlet for a tablecloth with a soft brown plaid fringed throw for a table topper.
Copper feather napkin rings marry a paisley and stripe napkins. Bone handle flatware adds a warm organic feel along with amber bell shaped goblets.

Love, love the mini pumpkins and posies; but it’s all just so cosy and comforting. That’s the thing about fall colors…nothing better.
Such beautiful autumnal accouterments! You’ve truly captured the essence of the season, Mary! I would love to snuggle under one of those pretty plaid throws & sip some spiced cider from those beautiful amber goblets.

Hi Andrea, I bet so, it’s a tad warmer here! Our family is too large to fit around the dining room table and we overflow onto table on the screened porch. There have only been one or two Thanksgivings that I remember when it was too chilly to sit out there :)

LOVE the lap blankets and all the warmth your whole table radiates Mary! I can almost taste the turkey :) What a lovely way to enjoy this special meal~ I am also trying to savor the last days of Fall, before the Christmas rush is upon us. I love the mix of things in your pumpkin vases, especially the beautiful colored leaves, and the rosemary surely puts a holiday scent in the air. It’s perfect!

Hi Mary, We were dining outside on a bay in Canada this August and the restaurant also was handing out blankets which we gladly accepted. Your beautiful setting for November with fall colors and pumpkins seems like a more appropriate place for snuggling in blankets while dining! Your plates are wonderful! I’ve been thinking about centerpieces for my Thanksgiving tables and now I think I will try to copy your mini pumpkin vases. They are so cute! Linda

Mary, this post sums up exactly how I feel about autumn too, even though I don’t have but a smidgen of retail experience. I volunteered for a hospital gift shop after retiring, and I experienced the unpacking in July. ‘-) I smiled at how our sentiments are so in sink as my post in draft is about the same thoughts. Wish I had your beautiful setting to share in photos.
Love the idea of individual throws at each chair. I wish some restaurants in town would adopt the idea.
I was hostess chair for garden club that was to meet yesterday. My plan for the serving table was layers of wool throws with a grouping of topiary plants in copper and pottery containers. Unfortunately the front that moved through here on Tuesday morning caused us to cancel for this month. We were touring a garden with lunch planned for the lovely terrace in the garden. We’ll reschedule for another date, but it will likely be in the spring now. Will need to come up with a different table idea.

I too love anticipating each season, and like you, I was in the retail business starting in 1980 for quite a few years, in SC, South FL and later on here in Hawaii….Each place had a completely different feel during the holidays…

Hi Barbara, The restaurant is Artisanal in Banner Elk. They’re open May 1st through November 1st. The restaurant is beautiful indoors too but we enjoy dining outside on the porch. They pass the blankets out on request :)

Mary, I sometimes think I am the only one savoring the last days of Fall. On Nov. 1st I turned my favorite radio station on and there it was…Christmas Music, non-stop until Dec. 25th. Turned it off and will not turn it on until the day after Thanksgiving. This world is moving so fast and we just keep allowing it to push us along and think we are headed in the right direction. Take time to think, RELAX!!! And enjoy the seasons!! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours and please…keep those beautiful photos coming our way!!!

MEah time I see your water view, I am a little envious. Love the individual pumpkins and warm feeling of the whole setting. In German sidewalk cafes, noce warm blankets are draped on the back of th chairs for the guests. It is charming and so are yours. Happy Thanksgiving, Linda
Such a beautiful fall setting. I would be outside enjoying the view as long as weather permits. The plaid throw is perfect, it adds a perfect fall base for your table. I’ve been thinking of a heater for my deck so we can enjoy the outdoor a little longer in the fall and early spring.
