A Winter Woodland Table + Snowflake Pizzelles

Happy January!

Have you un-decked the halls and are your Christmas decorations put away?

 I’m making the transition from Christmas to winter around the house and at the table

 with a wintry woodland mix of tree slice chargers, pine cones,

snowflakes and Pfaltzgraff Chateau dinnerware.

Pfaltzgraff Chateau dinnerware provides some texture and interest for dining with an

embossed cream stoneware surface, highlighted with brown scalloped edges.

When I first saw this pattern, the round center medallion

and embossed design reminded me of snowflakes.

I foraged for a tablecloth with a woodland theme and found one with pine cones and branches.

Shades of beige, brown, gray-blue, and white scattered snowflakes,

provide a wintry pattern and foundation for the table.

A pine bough spray with metallic accents of bronze, gold and silver branches

 mix with snow-tipped pine cones and silvery berries in the center of the table.

Lanterns are filled with a mixture pine cones and botanicals to complete a woodland centerpiece.

Wood beaded snowflake napkin rings add some texture and interest

to a pair of embroidered pine cone and hemstitched napkins.

A Pfaltzgraff Chateau bowl provides a pedestal to elevate birch wrapped candles,

and an additional woodland detail to the table.

After a couple of weeks of warmer than average December temperatures,

our weather is back in the normal range and I’m keeping

my fingers crossed for some snowflakes this winter!

You can make your own edible snowflakes with a pizzelle iron or use a short-cut

with ready-made pizzelles. Pizzelles are Italian wafer cookies.

 I found ready-made pizzelles at the grocery store for scattered snowflakes and sweet ending for the table.

I piped a snowflake design with royal icing on the cookies and sprinkled

the icing with sanding sugar while wet for sparkling snowflakes.

I used an easy recipe for royal icing without meringue powder to decorate the pizzelles.

Mix 1 cup confectioner’s sugar with 2 teaspoons milk, 2 teaspoons light corn syrup and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

(substitute almond or lemon extract if you prefer). Stir the sugar mixture until smooth.

Add more milk by 1/2 teaspoons at a time as needed, stirring until your desired consistency.

Add your icing to a piping bag or use a plastic ziptop bag and

snip off the corner to pipe your snowflake designs.

Sprinkle your piped snowflake with sanding or decorative sugar and shake off the excess sugar.

Allow snowflakes to dry completely, about 1 hour.
