Our feeder is visible from our kitchen table which makes it a daily part of our dining conversation. My favorite bird to view is our woodpecker, he is diligent and amazing to watch. We also thoroughly enjoy the antics of our squirrels as they seem to be training for an upcoming Circe De Solei show.

Love the tablescape. During these dreary days it is so nice to see the beautuful bird plates and bird houses. Thanks for sharing. Jean

I am new to your blog and just love all of your beautiful table settings. My favorite bird to watch at the feeder is the black-capped chickadee. They love the black-oil sunflower seed.

  2. January 15, 2016 at 6:43 am

In Northern Wisconsin I love watching the little chickadees. They are so hardy! There in even the coldest weather, taking one sunflower seed at a time, flying to a nearby tree to eat it and back again for another.

We are six months in Florida snow birds. But I still need to see the other kind of birds, so we have a feeder in the backyard. It’s kind of bushy back there so the birds have something to hide in. I couldn’t believe it when near Christmas I saw a painted bunting! He was so spectacular, and later on I saw his mate. I needed my bird guide to identify her since she lacked the beautiful colors of the male. Such a rare treat! As are those great salad plates.

  5. January 15, 2016 at 7:22 am

Love all things “birds”, especially dishes. You always do a beautiful job. I so enjoy viewing your posts. I love seeing the humming birds at our feeder. If you’d like you can see a sweet post I did on a bird Tea Party @ MakeItDelightful.com: Enter “Bird Tea” in “Search”. Thanks so much for sharing!

Bird watching, especially in New England in winter can be spectacular! The bleakness of winter make these gorgeous creatures stand out! There are so many favorites that visit the feeders daily and if I had to pick a favorite it would have to be the orange and black Baltimore Oriole. They are not only beautiful, but they sing the sweetest little song when they visit.

Happy 6th Blogging Anniversary, Mary! You have a wonderful blog and I enjoy it very much! My favorite bird is the robin, which growing up in Chicago, I loved to watch. I now live in the desert and unfortunately, it is too hot for them to live. On a very rare occasion in winter, I may be lucky to see one passing through, and let me tell you, it absolutely makes my heart sing! It brings back so many wonderful memories of seeing them on a daily basis!

Thanks for the opportunity to win and looking forward to many more years of enjoyment with your blog!

I enjoy receiving your emails. My favorite bird to see at the feeder is the chickadee. My most surprising bird feeding moment was discovering five bluebirds feasting on the winterberris in my second story window box.

I LOVE these bird plates! We live in South Florida and get so many vacationing birds on their way south in winter and back home in spring. I don’t have a feeder but have planted out our yard with shrubs/trees to provide a place for them. A sort of Bird & Breakfast. 😉 I love the brilliant Yellow Warblers that visit but our year round resident chartreuse green parrots may be my favorite.

Happy Anniversary! What fun to have a potting shed. When the Blackeyed Susans go to seed the Goldfinch make their appearance and a bring smiles. Have a wonderful day!

  17. January 15, 2016 at 8:16 am

Living on the lake as well, I enjoy seeing birds of all feathers. My favorite part of the day is what I call “rush hour”. Coots, seagulls, geese, they all seem to be busy at this time crossing paths on the water. But my favorite hands down is our resident birds of prey, the osprey and our bald eagle couple. Their sightings never get old.

We are so blessed to have cardinals in our yard. I love watching the bright red Mister against the snow and pines.
There are so many wondful things on your table today. The gloves – and in my world, Pinecones are divine.

  29. January 15, 2016 at 8:44 am

Your blog is at the top of my favorites list! You have an incredible eye for detail and arrangements. Since I live on a horse farm and have many barn cats and don’t want to tempt them, I don’t have have a bird feeder, but if I did, I would love to watch hummingbirds like my daughter has in Atlanta.
Could you tell me who makes your flatware? Adore the knife, fork and spoon engraved on them!! :)
    Thank you.

Oh my, Mary, ! You’ve done it again. The birds are so beautiful on the plates. I’m a quilter and love material with birds. Enjoy your day and weekend.

  32. January 15, 2016 at 8:49 am

Mary, your bird plates were a great find and my favorite bird is the bluebird. We see them checking out our four birdhouses, but none have taken up residence yet in five years. We’ve had tufted titmouse couples and once had a noisy house wren pair. Maybe this year the bluebirds will move in. Thanks for all your beautiful scenes and sharing your lovely dogs with us all.

Congratulations on your blogging anniversary! I have been reading for about a year and a half now and your posts always brighten my day. Carolina Wrens and Downy Woodpeckers are year-round favorites, but during the summer I love to see Painted Buntings

  36. Wendy Shipman
    January 15, 2016 at 9:05 am

My favorite bird at the feeder is the chickadee. These little birds look so delicate, but hardily endure our cold NH winters, and they remind me of my mom whose face would light up whenever they came to the feeder with their cheerful “chicka-dee-dee-dee.”

  37. January 15, 2016 at 9:07 am

My favorite is the tenacious little hummingbird during summer months, but for now – the beautiful cardinal makes me smile! And we are blessed with many.

  38. Anne
    January 15, 2016 at 9:08 am

I love to watch the cardinals since it is the Virginia state bird and quite a few other states. There are a pair that come back year after year and I wait for their return every year. I think they must have a long life span too. All the birds that I watch are beautiful though. Love them all. Hugs, Anne

    Barbara
From Whitehall, MI, our family room is open with windows on three sides. With our snowy days, which occur often, among all the birds which visit, I love to see the pairs of cardinals against the white snow. We have a heated birdbath which now is surrounded by a lighted grapevine wreath topped with about 6″ of snow. The cardinals love to get a drink and once again, against the snow, their beauty is wonderful to see.

My favorite bird is currently wintering in the Gulf of Mexico but I’m counting the days until my hummingbird feeder is as busy as Grand Central Station. This subscriber looks forward to your posts and appreciates this giveaway.

  43. donley1214
    January 15, 2016 at 9:14 am

I don’t have bird feeders, but I have many plants, bushes and trees that provide my local bird community with lots of berries and seeds to feed them throughout the winter. They especially like the coneflower seeds, and if they are really hungry , the blackeyed susans. I have blueberry viburnum whose berries never get to turn blue because they must be a delicacy, as the birds devour them. In addition to holly bushes, firebushes, flowering crabappples and Cleveland pear to mention just a few. The red of the cardinal certainly stands out this time of year, but when I do get a sighting, the brilliant blue of the bluebird is breath taking. I love shopping at Home Goods as it is always a treasure hunt, as you never know what you may discover. Thanks again for brightening my day. I really look forward to your posts.

I love your blog and check it daily. My favorite bird is the cardinal. But my second favorite is the yellow finches, because they remind me of my dad and his bird feeders.

We had to give up on the feeder as we have a very agile cat who considered the birds dinner. When we had one, I liked the Blue jays.

    January 15, 2016 at 9:27 am

Happy Anniversary! I live in the mountains so we are never at a loss for birds (although I must confess to not knowing all the different types). However, I have a beautiful resident red cardinal that likes to hang out in my Pear tree and I do look for him every day. In the summer I love to watch for my hummingbirds as they swoop in to drink from my flower boxes on my back deck. I don’t know what it is about these tiny, delicate, colorful looking little birds that always makes me so excited to see them.

  55. Diana Berns -Zylstra
    January 15, 2016 at 9:32 am

My favorite bird is the adorable Anna’s Hummingbird that frequents my feeder throughout the day. He has to tolerate a pair of much bigger Gila Woodpeckers that often perch & monopolize the nectar, but he will hover & await his turn.

  56. Sandi Lee
    January 15, 2016 at 9:33 am

Blue birds are my favorite birds to see here in Georgia. They have the most amazing color of blue. In the summer I love the hummingbirds that feed from my flower box I can sit in my rocker and they come right up to get the nectar. Fearless as I’m only a foot or so from them. Amazing to watch.

  57. Linda W.
    January 15, 2016 at 9:34 am

I love the goldfinches at my feeder-more muted in winter but bright yellow feathers in summer. We get a kick out of watching them go upside down on the thistle feeder to get their seeds. I follow you on Bloglovin. Would love a Pottery Barn gc. Thanks for the generous offer!

The tufted tit-mouse, small but so delightful to watch. They are so airbatic as they scurry up and down the tree trunks, from right side to upside down! These skilled little feathered creatures can bring a smile to all who take time to slow down and enjoy the gifts they bring!

We have birdfeeders throughout our backyard and love to view nature’s winged beauties feasting at them.

My mother loved cardinals and I think of her often although it’s been almost three years since she passed. Each time I see a cardinal in our backyard it makes me smile, letting me know that she is watching over us. They are so beautiful!

Your creativity, decor and photography always amaze me. I love the bird theme in this post. My favorite bird to watch outside our windows at the feeders is the cardinal, the color of the males is SO vivid it’s almost like they have a bulb inside them making them glow. The females blend in with the brown of the trees, but I just watch for the orange of their beakI love how Mother Nature created the differences in gender!

Since our last name is Sparrow, we do have a lot of bird accessories in our house! I like to watch the Downy Woodpeckers bring their babies to the suet cakes to teach them how to eat from them. The babies are the same size but their head feathers are a little rumpled and they look like they just got out of bed!

Happy Blogging Anniversary! It’s been a great time for your readers. This post is so timely with the time of year. This time of year has it’s serenity and beauty in the beautiful silhouettes of the bare trees but the birds give us color and joy as they stand out in the landscape.

I enjoy the Cardinals most. I recognize their sounds immediately and like seeing Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal together eating their breakfast. The Pottery Barn plates are lovely. I’m going to check and see if they have any left.

I follow on facebook and online and have shared your post. My favorite birds are cardinals for that glorious red color, bluebirds for their pretty song and the tiny purple and green hummingbird that joins me when I sit outside in my garden to read and sip a glass of ice tea.

Beautiful post. My favorite to watch at the feeders are the hummingbirds and gold finches during the summer. In the winter I love to watch all my feathered friends including the chickadees, cardinals and tufted titmice. I am a subscriber. Happy Anniversary Mary!

I love you creativity and style Mary! I enjoy having a garden that attracts birds and butterfly’s. It’s hard to pick a favorite bird, but I do love humming birds! Golden finch are one of my favs as well! I subscribe to your blog via email, follow you on Facebook and Pinterest! Love your black cap chickadee plates!

  92. January 15, 2016 at 10:35 am

Great post and displays. I am the crazy bird lady on Shumway and have multiple feeders and houses around our 20 acre property. My favorite in the winter are the cardinals, for there shocking color in our drab landscape. However, in the spring when the gold finches come out my love is fickle, and they become my favorite. Thanks for hosting this giveaway.

I love having cardinals at our feeder. They were my late mother’s favorite birds. I fill our feeder with oily black sunflower seeds so the cardinals visit us often as well as chickadees, tufted titmice, and blue jays. We received a squirrel feeder for Christmas and have nailed it to our deck. So far, no squirrels have touched it. They prefer the sunflower seeds in the bird feeder.

I love your winter birdy tablescape. I’m going to copy it and fix up a table on my indoor porch that we can see from our kitchen table, but alas, I have no pretty bird plates but will make do with what else I have. I love your blog! I love your potting shed! We enjoy the cardinals the most in northern IL and when it’s warmer, and we’re outside, we love to hear them singing. We have lots of blue spruce so we have lots of nesting places for all the birds. And it’s so exciting to see who gets to see the first robin when they come back. Thanks for the giveaway. My birthday is Jan 29 so it would make a wonderful birthday present! I look forward to your email each day and I’m heading over to facebook to friend you right now!

  95. January 15, 2016 at 10:37 am

Oh gosh… an Amazon card would be the cat’s meow! Only because neither of the other stores are located near our town unfortunately. As for the birdie at my feeder? Well, they don’t normally feed on feeders because they are so elusive, but if they did I would most enjoy seeing a pileated woodpecker because they are so large and awesome! Thanks for this opportunity… I check and read your blog often. xo

We can see the birds feeding from our sunroom here in Tennessee. Though there are lots of birds, I think the cardinal is my favorite..the male looks so bright and beautiful against the drab background of January. Sometimes there are several cardinals in an apple tree not far from the feeder and they are such a beautiful sight.

Somehow we have attracted quail…yes quail….at our bird feeder. They are cute little things and I would attach a picture if I could figure out how. 😊 I love to watch them scurying about and their cute little song is so darling.

We love birdwatching at our house and by the generousity of family have a few feeders. My favorite bird is the perky little, always alert chickadee. Now on to post this to Facebook so I can use my gift card at Amazon for a gardening book.

I can’t tell you how many times we’ve laughed at his antics (and…does it count that is our state bird as well as the mascot of my high school daze??) :) What a perfect potting shed vignettes!! franki

I love the table! It is beautiful and reminds me of a dear friend who died several years ago. She loved birds and before she died of breast cancer, she told her friends to always think of her when we hear the birds singing. I think of her every day. She loved cardinals best, so I especially miss her when I see cardinals at my feeders.

Cardinals are my all time favorite birds. I have made several birdseed bars this year and placed them in the yard using the recipe you featured for birdseed wreaths. I have Cardinals in the snow as a mailbox cover and several ‘chippy’ birds setting around the house. I would love to use a gift card at Amazon.

I have not seen anything you do that I have not gasped at the beauty. But a question that keeps circling my brain is where does she store all her goodies? Have you ever showed the group your storage area? I have only been following for a year, so you may have already shared with others. But do think about this question, I’m surely not the only one.

Love this post!! I live south of you on lake Wylie. My favorite birds have got to be the great blue herons. Also love the geese who look like barges on the water. Oh and the eagle. And the baby ducks in spring! I truly can’t pick one,and that’s not including the birds at feeder.

We have 3 cats who are real hunters and frequently bring in gifts, consequently we don’t have a bird feeder to aid them. If we did, I would so love to see cardinals feeding in my birdfeeders. Alas, in Montana that is not a reality.

I so enjoy reading your blog.

Good Morning. I love all songbirds for their plumage, grace and pluckiness. I feel fortunate that I see chickadees, nuthatch, juncos, tufted titmouse, goldfinch and a very occasional cardinal. But I get really excited when I see the downy and pileated woodpeckers show up in the winter. I make sure I have suet available for these strong, beautifully plumed birds. Thanks for asking!!

My birds come to my pond to drink from the fountain. I love the Cardinals, Jays and Mockers, but my favorite is the little Carolina Wrens that sometimes build their nest in my hanging basket by the backdoor. Tried to get the bird plates, but seem to be sold out. LOVE your blog!

My favorites to see and watch are the yellow finches. I loved this special post because I love birds and my deck backs up the the Chattahoochee Preserve. I get lovely birds but there is something so joyful to look out and see the sweet finches. I also loved your idea of putting utensils in the potting gloves. You are so creative!!

Mary, Six years is fantastic, congratulations. My husband and I spend the winter in Florida. Our condo here is on the St. Lucie River and we just love watching the birds hunting and diving for fish. I love how very patient the brown pelicans are as the wait for a meal to show up. The remainder of the year we spend in North Carolina where we enjoy watching all kinds of birds in our garden but my very favorite is a pair of Cardinals who visit every year.

Mary, it’s been going on 2 years since I discovered your post. You have been blessed with a wonderful talent. I,like many other readers look on my email first to seen if you have a new post. I absolutely love the bird plates. We have no Pottery Barn or Home Goods near by, both are in Chicago about 150 miles away. I have always had a Thistle and suet feeder out,but this year I added a seed cake. I now have Cardinals and Blue Jays visiting several times a day in addition to the Nuthatches, Finch, Dove, Tit-Mouse and my 2 different sized Woodpeckers. So hard to pick my favorite love all of Gods creations. Give a treat to your 2 furry pals from me.

What a sweet table setting. I made your macaroon wreaths three times during the holidays for various parties. They were a big hit…so festive looking. I think I will try making them in a heart shape for Valentine’s Day as they work out well for my gluten-free friends. The city is clearing out the dead brush near my house. I hope they don’t chase all of the birds away. I love seeing little California Wrens and young Doves eating and bathing.

CongratUlations on 6 years of inspiring so many! Such a generous give away too! We don’t have many birds here in winter, plenty of deer though! In the warmer months I love seeing the Cardinals visit. Love your fun table! We had a few cold days but today it will warm up to near 50 and I intend to walk down to the beach and enjoy it, and then go to Home Goods, my fave, for some retail therapy! Have a great weekend, Mary!

Just beautiful! Not my favorite bird, however I am saying my cardinal who I see every morning at my bird feeder. Looking out my kitchen window he greets me every day. I named him Harold last year. “HARK THE HEARALD ANGEL SING” Harold reminds me of Hearald which reminds me of Jesus and His love for us!!!

I love all of your potting shed posts. I hope to have a shed of my own some day. Maybe this is the year…. :)
My favorite bird is the hummingbird but they are gone for the winter in Washington. My second favorite are the Robins, not ones for perching at the bird feeder but for me the beginning of the garden season. Thanks for your wonderful blog.

Love those plates! I have Bluebirds that are visiting my feeder right now. This is a first, as I have never seen them in the past. I started using a mix of seed that has dried meal-worms in it, so guess that might be what they are after. It seems that both the male and female travel together, for they are giving me a lot of eye candy these days.

I would like to get an Amazon card should I be the winner!

Also, I subscribe to your daily posts….and enjoy every one of them!

The Cardinals are my favorite bird to see at the feeder or in our bushes. I believe because they were my Mother’s favorite, that is why I love them so much. I really enjoy your posts and seeing all your pretty dishes , accessories and arrangements. You have a wonderful talent and are an inspiration!

  150. January 15, 2016 at 12:42 pm

Hi Mary, I love your January Blues header today! So gorgeous! And your table with the birdhouses and all the little birdies is so inviting. I am wondering if it is cold in the Shed? I can imagine walking along your lake then going in for some munchies and a warm toddy! There are always so many things to talk about with your photos that sometimes I just start dreaming (or click a tempting link to a previous post) and don’t even know where to begin! Like today, I want to tell you that I have a little brass bell EXACTLY like the one near the edge of the jute runner (another of my favorites which I always notice!) which was given to me by Secret Santa in college, and I’m thinking about that friend now! I so very much appreciate all your 6 years of amazing and entertaining posts. As for my favorite birds, I don’t want them to hear me say this, but I was very excited (and a bit worried) to see two bluebirds last week! We have a large flock of goldfinch for the first time, three types of woodpeckers, and the other usual northeastern birds. I watch for them all each day. Here’s to another six (or more) years of inspiration from you! Linda

I would have to say that my favorite are the busy little Chickadees! Of course the fact that my Grandmother use to call me her “Little Chickadee” when I was very young may have something to do with it! She had a small home in Wisconsin…it had a huge yard and she had beautiful flowers of all kinds, zinnia, gladiolus, iris and lots of tomato plants. She also loved her feathered friends and she nestled in her birdbath and feeders. The chickadees were the most prevalent and I loved their markings and how they flitted about from feeder to feeder and splashed in the little birdbath. It was peaceful and serene and I loved being there. That was many years ago now and I have picked up where she left off with her flowers and bird feeders and birdbaths scattered all over my yard. I miss her very much but her legacy lives on…..
I just love your photos your blog is an inspiration to start each day.
    Thank you.

  154. January 15, 2016 at 12:53 pm

I love birds, especially the robin, which is also my little sister’s name. Bird nests with eggs are sooooo charming, I have a few nests with eggs around the house – gives it an earthy touch.
I love reading Home is Where the Boat Is for inspiration, for the home and for the heart.

What a charming post, but then that is a common reward when visiting your blog. I am a follower both on friends connect and by email and I feel that I have already won . . . I’m taking home some stunning ideas to incorporate into my potting shed. Thank you for the opportunity to win this very gracious gift.

It is hard for me to choose, I love them all. I love sitting at my kitchen table and watch them on my feeders. I suppose if I have to choose a favorite right this minute, it would be a Cardinal. It is so rainy and grey this morning, that beautiful red breaks through and brightens my day.

Mary, I love the use of the gardening gloves–great idea! Have you tried Droll Yankee bird squirrel-proof bird feeders? They actually work. I got one after I almost shot a workman on my deck with a BB gun because I thought he was a squirrel The birdfeeders are expensive but cheaper than a lawsuit. LOL!!

Love your blog – my favorite of all of them! My favorite bird is the Red Bird. I lost my brother 3 years ago at age 62 (way to early) and every time I see a red bird it reminds me of him! I always smile and say hello sweet brother! Life is so short and we must always find beauty in all of God’s creatures and each other! Thanks for sharing a beautiful part of you! All the best to you in this New Year!

Hi Mary! First of all I wanted to tell you how much I enjoy reading your blog and seeing your pictures. I’m continually amazed at your creativity and love the recipes you choose to share and your gorgeous presentations of each.
It’s hard to pick a favorite winter bird at my feeders but, I do particularly love the house finches with their touch of crimson and the beautiful cardinals.

My son put a birdfeeder on top of a metal shed in our back yard. It draws all kinds of birds and a very chubby squirrel. I just love him , he has some sass. I really enjoy your blog – excellent photography and very creative decorating that inspires me. Thanks you!

  168. January 15, 2016 at 1:48 pm

I love the friendly little chickadees. Then at dusk the vibrant cardinal and his mate. All the hungry birds are welcome all year long.

  169. January 15, 2016 at 1:50 pm

As an avid bird watcher for a long time, my dad got me into that! I love all birds that come to my feeder. I especially love the Sparrow! I always think about the song “Eye on the Sparrow” And I feel especially close to God at that time! I would love a Homegoods card to “feather my nest”! Thank you for this opportunity and always the beautiful presentations!

We have sparrows, mourning doves, Mexican doves, woodpeckers, an occasional cardinal, and, of course squirrels, but, a few years ago because of forest fires in the Bastrop Tx area, Baltimore orioles were apparently driven off their migratory path and we had dozens in our backyard for several weeks. Just beautiful, beautiful birds. Love the tablescape as usual.

I like cardinals and golden finches the best. But I’m happy when any bird is on our feeder because we have two cats that love to watch them and it makes me happy when they are happy. (I am a blog follower also.)

Another post of your’s that I have so enjoyed! Bird watching at my feeders is an enormous daily pleasure. Besides my hanging feeders I fill a birdbath with various seeds and it attracts squirrels and as I live in a high mountain there are lots of deer stopping by for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Mary Happy 6th Anniversary blogging, always look forward to your postings. In the mornings my husband and I watch from the kitchen table window busy little nuthatches, they swoop in, are everywhere on the large Rockrose bush on the other side. So agile, flitting from one branch to the next, upside down, all around…they are quick and then are gone.

My backyard bird feeder is an active spot for Los Angeles area birds and some that pass by seasonally. One of the locals is an Oak Titmouse who always waits until the feeder is unoccupied and then quickly swoops in to select one special seed from the bird feeder and then quickly retreat to a nearby tree to enjoy the treat.

  196. January 15, 2016 at 4:34 pm

I would love to win in your give away! Happy Blogiversary sweetie! My favorite bird at my bird feeder are Hummingbirds! Such powerful little creatures! Hugz Lisa and Bear

I so enjoy your blog, which I get via email. I live in the northern suburbs of Chicago, and we have such wicked winters around here that my neighbors and I make extra efforts to keep our bird feeders full. The Canada geese have just departed, which makes it somewhat quieter, but our local woodpecker is trying to fill that void. He is a favorite, but the blue jay who only stops by occasionally is by far my very favorite.

  199. January 15, 2016 at 4:50 pm

I actually don’t have a feeder up. Haven’t figured out where to put one in my little patio space. I do, however, have a bird bath that sees a lot of visits from feathered friends. I love watching all birds and can’t pick a favorite! :-)

Beautiful plates, Mary! Don’t put me in the drawing, though. Let someone else win it.
I just wanted to tell you birds may no longer be so cute to me!!! Would you believe a hawk flew right through the large screen into the gazebo & got trapped inside? I opened the door & laid down bread pieces, trying to entice it out. Two full hours went by & it didn’t touch the bread, but it was flying into all the other screened areas, trying to get out. STUPID BIRD!!!

I finally put on Ernie’s black hoodie, tied it tight around my head, then held a big yellow bath towel up in front of me to try to chase him around to the door. It worked!

I just spent an hour cleaning up bird poop off my beautiful brand new canvas table/chair cover!!!! All the years Ernie used crappy blue plastic tarps that took 2 people to fasten with tie-down straps, this never happened. The FIRST time I get to use the expensive $$$ cover & it shit all over it…and the floor!

I scrubbed the floor on my hands & knees & flushed everything with buckets of water that I carried across the kitchen floor, because the water has been turned off to the outside faucets for the winter.

I’ve read that birds flying into the house represents death of a loved one or bad luck.

I wanted to yell after him that he was a year late!!!

I love feeding the birds year round! I currently have 8 feeders. And two heated birdbaths. Living in the Rocky Mountains at 7,000 feet, limits the types of birds that I have in the winter. And though I love all types of birds, in the winter I enjoy seeing the sharp tailed grouse. It is not uncommon for us to have several here at one time. And it has turned out, that we have a lek; a mating area for them. Such a privilege to watch and observe their habits.

  202. January 15, 2016 at 5:06 pm

In winter I love to see Cardinals against the white snow. They just make me smile every time.

  203. January 15, 2016 at 5:41 pm

I love to see our Iowa state bird, the Goldfinch. They are so petite and the males are such a bright yellow in the summer but a bit dull in the winter like their female counterparts. They are a bit rare these days but hope to see more in the Spring. Beautiful post today, as usual.

  206. January 15, 2016 at 7:10 pm

I love watching the birds at our feeder, I love them all. The goldfinches are so pretty in summer, and we have the Carolina Wren too. There are nuthatches and titmouse, woodpeckers and cardinals. We have juncos in the spring. I just made them a homemade suet cake for their feeder, first to find it was the Carolina Wren.

Love your winter bird table setting. You have the touch!

After this past year I have to say my favorite bird is the humming bird. We had a mama build a nest on a low branch and had the joy of watching her raise 2 babies. That was something. In her honor we upgraded our feeder. So fun!

Thanks for being so generous to us. I still make your buffalo meat balls you posted for super bowl one year.

  209. January 15, 2016 at 7:39 pm

    Mary,
Yours posts are so inspiring! Birds…love them all, almost. The hummingbird in the warmer months and the cardinal in the colder ones are the

I love reading all of your posts and especially delight in your creative tablescapes and recipes! Living on a lake and in the woods of NJ, we can only feed birds during the winter months; due to the bear roaming the area. Bear love the seed and local wildlife regulations prohibit bird feeders from March to December. However my favorite daily sightings are of the Swan couple that live near the lake. They are magnificent beauties, gliding along in the water or waddling over the ice when the lake is frozen. We have been blessed for several years in the springtime, when the swans have had their cygnets and bring them onto the lake. Fluffy little greyish cygnets bobbling on the water, until they tire out and mom swan opens her wings. Then the little ones climb up and under her wings and they float back home. This is a blessed gift from mother nature indeed.

Mary, this was the first post I read this morning and it’s taking me this long to get back to you – tgif. Congratulations on your 6 year mark – your blog is one of my favorites and I just love this tablescape. Thanks for the chance of your giveaway. My favorite bird at the [black oil sunflower] feeder in winter is the cardinal, hands down. It is our state bird, and I love the symbolism of a visitor from heaven when one is sighted.

    January 16, 2016 at 12:17 am

My husband and I still talk about a fleeting moment in nature that we witnessed together. We were walking around a conservation area, where birds stay and feed over winter. That place seemed magical with the hoar frost hanging everywhere in the -20F morning. We were heading back towards the bridge, to an area that opens up, like a natural amphitheatre with an expanse of water on either side. The sun was shining through, sparkling and highlighting the muskrat dens and reeds that were poking through the ice.
We had just set foot on the bridge, when the words spilled out of our mouths at same time “what’s that noise?”. Two large white swans appeared, as out of nowhere, flying over our heads, not more than ten feet above us and over the water and gone, just as quickly as they had appeared.

Happy anniversary and many more!! Bluebirds and quail at the feeders.

I enjoyed a walk today in the snow and was delightfully surprised to see Canadian Geese, ducks, mallards and large white ducks marching up the trail from a hidden pond and creek and by luck got it all on video. wish there was some way I could show it to you, such a rare sight. I love to see the juncos. I don’t actually see them at the feeder, but below it. They are foraging for the seeds that land on the ground. Such cute little birds…black on top with white underbelly and sides. I only see them here in the winter. They look so plump to me…I just want to scoop them up and pet them. Ha! Love your post….I call myself a bird nerd…I enjoy watching all the birds at my feeders.

The bird plates look great with the plaid Mary! Glad you’ve been staying warm, I hear there’s even a chance of flurries for the Carolina game tomorrow! When I see the bright red cardinal against a winter landscape, I know my guardian angel is close by. When I see the giant red-headed woodpecker at the suet, I think of “the wise old man.” I laugh when my nosey house wren comes out from under the lawn furniture screeching for attention. To choose one is to live half a life. Enjoy all Gods creatures to the fullest. :)

I enjoy seeing the bluebirds. Their little birdies seem hand-painted, and of course their presence portends Happiness!!

  248. January 16, 2016 at 10:02 am

My favorite bird at my feeder is only around a short time in Minnesota summers. They are the Baltimore Orioles. Early in May, I dust off my orange jelly feeder, make a trip to the grocery store for grape jelly & fill it up in anticipation for my beautiful orange birdies! The neat thing about them, is that you hear them first before they come to the feeder. I often have the parents bring their babies to the feeder, watching the parents put jelly in their babies mouths is joy to watch. It is said that the same couple comes back to the same area and sets up their domain. I’m happy they have chosen my yard as their summer retreat!

Mary, I’m thinking my favorite bird will not qualify, as it could not fit on either of my 2 feeders. It is the American Bald Eagle. I am “Lucky Enough” to live on the side of a hill overlooking a River and at this time of the year it is mostly frozen. The Bald Eagles come through periodically looking for food. They are the most amazing, majestic bird I have ever seen. It stirs my heart and fills me with pride that our forefathers chose this bird as a symbol for the United States of America. When I am lucky enough to see them soar by, I can’t imagine a better symbol of Freedom.

Congratulations! Thus is such a sweet post~I’ve always loved birds. I watched them as a little girl growing up in Wisconsin & I’m still watching them in Massachusetts! I, of course, love the beautiful colors of the cardinals & bluebirds but I have to say my favorite are the little nut hatches. We had a little nest of them last spring & they brought me such joy. So sweet!
Keep up the wonderful posts~we all treasure reading them!

Hey Mary – happy Saturday! Love all the birdies – even the hawk. Felt really bad for Rettabug – but glad he got out of her gazebo without damage to himself. (Sorry she had to do so much cleaning). Love the chic-a-dee for it’s sweet little body, cute black cap and delightful song; Love the Cardinal for it’s brilliant red coat against the white snow. Also love how Mr. Cardinal always gives Mrs. Cardinal a seed and places it right in her beak! What a gentleman! Busy today organizing things in the basement, but will soon be making my gingerbread bird house that you inspired – can’t wait to get started. Happy 6th delightful, inspirational years – so glad I’m an avid fan! Would love to get a new heater for the birdbath at Amazon! :)

Mary, our garden shed is almost done and you have been a huge inspiration for it. I enjoy our variety of birds around here also, at last count I’ve identified over thirty, but I think the Western Bluebird has to be my favorite. I have about twenty bluebird houses out and looking forward to this spring.

Love this blog of yours, I look forward to it and read it so detailed every time you post. Our bird feeder is right out side our kitchen window, like so many others, we love all the birds but the male cardinal is my favorite, that red is just beautiful.

    Mary,

I have been following your blog for almost two years now and look forward to all your wonderful recipes and ideas. Everything is beautiful and inspiring! Thank-you!

My Husband and I love watching the birds at the feeders in our yard and are always looking for the next place that “must have” a feeder!

I especially love the little Black Capped Chickadees. They are so tiny and plump and share the feeders well with their other feathered friends. Admittedly, I also get a rush of excitement later in the winter when we get our first glimpse of electric blue on the Eastern Bluebirds lighting on the hedgerow! So lovely!

Thank-you for inspiring us all and sharing your gifts!

Without a doubt my favorite birds to watch at my feeder are the bright and cheery cardinals. Here in my Alabama winter woods, their bright red color offers a cheery hello against the grays and browns of the trees. I have counted as many as eight or nine gathering for their daily treats and chatter!

Holy smokes, this has to be my most favorite post of yours ever…..and that’s saying a LOT because your pics are always so WOW…but a bird themed tablescape – be still my heart! ♥♥♥ birdies!!!

I am a follower, so there’s that. My home, business and blog is called FINCH REST – so I would have to say they’re my favorites to have come around to any one of my 7 feeders. I enjoyed watching a male and female cardinal this morning, that’s our State Bird, and Chickadees are so cute they melt my heart. My favorite one these past two summers were chubby little bluebirds, but they always seems to fall victim to preying flier birds. Makes me cry every single time. I even posted about it a long while back.

As for the stores you are asking me to choose between my three favorite stores of all time, yikes. If given only one I will just say HomeGoods because I need so much there. Thank you very much for the generous giveaway! : – )

My favorite birds to watch is a pair of Painted Buntings, the reason bring that they were also my mom’s favorite. We would watch them from her bedroom as they say in her lemon tree. And while my lemon tree is too far from my window, grandchildren are learning to watch for and observe them at the glass doors by the feeder and bath. Wish Great-grandma could watch and enjoy with them!

I enjoy watching goldfinch from our table at our kitchen window. We have an upside down thistle feeder and the goldfinch are the only ones able to hang upside down to feed. Other birds will try but don’t have the ability to hang upside down. It’s fun to watch them try. Occasionally, a chickadee will be able to but they don’t have the stamina to stay for very long.

We have quite a few bird feeders. We love our feathered friends. Hands down for me is the cardinal. The cardinal is special to my family. My father would feed the birds.. The cardinals practically ate out of his hand.. My mother would laugh saying boy you are St. Francis.. ( his middle name Francis.. Lol) When my father passed away, coming home from the funeral a cardinal was sitting right by the back door on the fence.. To my mother it was a sign from dad 😇 So my mother always had cardinals dishes at and ornaments at Christmas..😊 Well when mom passed away after coming home from making funeral arrangements my husband called me to the kitchen window and there was a flock of cardinals in our yard..what a sight. My cousin said that is a sign she is home.. I would like to think that. So we love the family of cardinals in our yard. We also get Quaker parrots too..the red and green at the feeders is so pretty .. and they all love it when it is snowing too. We just love to watch them.
Your tables apes are so inspiring. Geez everything you do is inspiring😀 Thank you for having such an inspiring blog.

  343. PatinCal
    January 28, 2016 at 6:44 pm

We don’t have a feeder, since there are plenty of plants for the birds to nosh on in the garden. The bird I would love to see at a feeder, if we did have one, would be a cardinal. However, since we also don’t have cardinals here, I’ll nominate the elusive flicker, which I’ve only seen around here a few times.
