Are you prepared for Winter Storm Jonas? Our snow started in the wee hours and switched over to sleet and is now freezing rain.
We’re under a winter storm warning here in North Carolina through Saturday.
They’re predicting accumulations a 1/2 inch of ice and 6 inches of snow, thankfully nowhere near the 12 – 24 inches forecasted in the Northeast.
I’m predicting a run on birdseed just like the run on bread and milk at the grocery store. :)
The Winter Window Boxes on my Potting Shed got a light dusting of snow overnight.

I too live in NC, Southern Pines. We have a small lake/.pond out our back which has yet to freeze over. Light sleet is falling which is fine. Should it turn to freezing rain, watch out. Got up and made a big pot of Taco Soup. Having a built in generator means I can use my micro wave to heat food. Love your ideas/ designs. many I have used through the years. My favorite dinnerware pattern is still the Queen Thanksgiving, by Churchill It has the beautiful turkey in center and is edged with colorful flowers. Thanks to you I was able to find this and purchase place settings and serving pieces.

It has been pouring rain all night in Clemson, with temp hovering right at 34. We are supposed to get snow later today also. Stay safe and warm, Mary, with your camera close by! I love the photo you caught of the bird in flight at the feeder.

Thank you for shaing your beautiful photos! We are in middle Tennessee and have about 3 inches of snow and it is still falling. Our fridge is stocked and we are tucked away safe and cozy! Our birdfeeder is getting lots of visitors this morning. We’re stocked up on birdseed, too! Enjoy your day!

Ugh, our snow started at 9am here in WV, as predicted (expecting 12-18″). One of my friends on Facebook commented, “Snow is starting right on schedule. Why couldn’t it be more like a cable repair guy – coming sometime between 8am and 5pm and then never showing up?”. Trying to stay calm and winter on, but it’s hard. Very hard.

Always lovely photographs! Mary, you have a knack for capturing the mood. We’re in Reno, NV. I’m sorry to say there’s more on the way. First snow storm then horizontal rain and high winds. We’ve had a two day break but expecting more snow today. Good day for organizing the pantry and baking a loaf of homemade bread.

The only good part of a winter storm is the beauty that it brings!….I have my spagetti sauce simmering on the stove and all is well…a little bit of snow today, but mainly sleet right now….stay safe and warm and enjoy that gorgeous view!

So far, so good in beautiful Spartanburg, SC: snow on the ground, frozen water droplets in the trees, bamboo bending over…but we still have power, and my husband has got the generator ready to go and made a big pot of soup! Hope everyone stays warm and sheltered!
Hi, First and foremost, I love your blog! I always take away something after enjoying the read and pictures. In todays photos, I spotted something, I have been wondering about, since I go through Finch food like crazy. On the plastic tube feeders, (I have the same as yours pictured) should the place where the little guys get their seed be fully opened, like yours shows or do they peck it out of the hole on the lid when it’s closed? I thought you opened the little doors, if you were serving larger seeds and kept it closed for the tiny Thistle seeds. Ideas anyone? Thanks again and stay warm!!!
Thank you Linda! The feeder in the photo is designed for sunflower seed and it has a standard size opening that is stationary which the Goldfinches flock to in the winter. I have a cardinal blend in the feeder mixed with some sunflower seed now. I have a thistle feeder too but they seem to prefer the sunflower seed in the winter :)
Thanks Mary, I’ll have to try some other seeds to wet their appetite! Right now, I have the thistle seeds in the tube and I’m keeping the little covers down so they can peck through the tiny holes. It’s working! The tube is slowly emptying and I’m not going through as much as I was, while keeping the hatches open. I think a lot of the thistle was falling to the ground. Looking forward to your next newsletter. By the way, I rushed out to buy those wonderful lighted snow flakes. That’s a great idea to carry through the winter months, but alas, all our stores have turned over to Spring stock!

Mary, please know that all on the East Coast are in our prayers. We’re too far West to be in on this round of bad weather, but I’m sure we’ll get our turn later in the winter. Question I have, in your beautiful pictures your bird bath is still upright. Do you have a problem with freezing water and the bowl cracking? My birdbath is getting enough age that I’m concerned about leaving it out in the winter. Take care and stay safe.

Love pictures of new falling snow! No snow on the east coast of Florida. We are under a severe thunder storm warning until 5 0’clock. High winds and rain. Falling temperatures for the weekend into the 30*. Love the winter weather for a change though. Enjoy your snow, and stay warm & cozy!

hey! my brother and sister in law moved to New Bern, NC about three years ago. they love it, and so I guess you have to take the good with the bad. weather wise!!! stay safe!! love the birds at the feeder!! I just threw bread scraps out…usually the squirrels eat up everything, but I see the birds are out there. I try to keep my ‘watering holes’ unfrozen for them too. all good. I live down the shore, NJ. so we’re gonna get hit bigtime. but….45 on Tuesday!!! stay safe, and thanks for sharing. I love your stuff!!! (not the boat, though……!!!)
Mary and friends, It is such fun to enjoy beautiful winter photographs from afar. Would wait to post, but here in Northern Virginia they are predicting snows around 2 feet with likely power outages. I have enough craft projects to occupy me for days, but no electricity will curtail most of them. As predicted, the snow began right after noon and it is coming down fast. Right now it is pretty fine but accumulating and they say it will get much heavier tonight and most of tomorrow. Anyone who has lived in the DC metro area knows that snow of any kind is a nightmare, people panic. I am expecting that things will be pretty much closed down at least until Monday and probably part of next week. The grocery store yesterday was beyond description, I should have taken a photo but forget that I can do that with my phone. I told one friend that it looked like looters had swept through. Interestingly, there was some bread and toilet paper still available, but the meat counters were stripped bare, the milk cases completely empty, and there wasn’t a potato or onion to be had. I stocked up on what I could find and luckily it is so cold that if we do lose power for days I will just load up coolers and put the food in the snow! We are hunkering down and hoping for the best. The bird feeder picture amazing!! I love birds , but I have no feeder because doesn’t the seed droppings grow weeds? I need no more weeds to pull !!!

I can’t believe it is snowing where you are! It started here in NJ around 7 pm. I can handle the snow. I can’t handle not having electricity and it goes out at the drop of the hat. Praying it doesn’t. Stay warm!
Mary, I know you enjoy a little bit of snow so I hope you get a nice blanket but with very little ice. I can’t wait to see your photos after the flakes fall! I checked out your link for ideas for staying calm and I’d love some of the minestrone and a snow cream, adult version please. Our forecast has been crazy, from this morning when they were predicting nothing for us (we were on the edge) to 15″ now, starting tonight and going all day tomorrow. What beautiful photos you have taken–I like the snow on the window boxes and the bird feeder. We have bird feeders in our front yard and they are supposed to be squirrel proof. We have over a foot of snow and my husband shoveled a path for our sweet Shortie (she is part Beagle/Corgi) in our back yard. Sorry to hear you may get ice–stay safe and warm.

Pictures are beautiful. Sorry about the ice, but now you can know what we in the north deal with from November – March! Although we have heavy equipment and tons of salt to assist. It’s always pretty at first, but the older I get the more I want milder winters like we are having this year in MI. Hardly any snow, temps in the 20’s and next week in the 30’s! Yea! Hope all of you stay safe and warm with heat, lights and food.

Hi Mary, I hope you didn’t get that 6 inches of ice and lose power, I haven’t heard much except about NY and PA…B’ham was spared this time. It is COLD on the coast with strong winds so we’ve been watching tennis and today FOOTBALL! We’ll be rooting for your NC Panthers!!!
