Keep Pounding: Football Cake Pops!

I have a sweet ending to your game day line of football food for the Super Bowl,

Football Cake Pops, aka Keep Pounding Pops!

DSC_6822-001

As you can imagine, Panthers Pride abounds in anticipation of Super Bowl 50 in the hopes of Carolina Panthers’ victory over the Denver Broncos and  first-ever Super Bowl win this Sunday! I think I bought the last package of napkins to be found in a 30 mile radius and there was no Carolina Panther blue anything left at Party City as of a week ago.

DSC_6796-001

Keep Pounding has become a team mantra in honor of late Carolina Panthers player and coach Sam Mills, who first used the phrase “Keep Pounding” as a coach in an emotional speech to the team prior to the Panthers’ playoff game in 2004, after being diagnosed with cancer. He spoke about commitment, dedication to teammates, team effort and never giving up and to “Keep Pounding.” His speech and legacy became a rallying cry for the team and the spirit of Keep Pounding continues today for anyone fighting cancer.

These football cake pops are appropriately made with pound cake. Theses cake or “fork pops” are easy to serve for a party! I used a Sara Lee Frozen Pound Cake which is easy to find and texture makes it ideal for cutting out shapes, using the same method as in Puppy Love Pops.

DSC_6747-001

Follow the directions on the package to thaw your cake. I used the family size (1 pound) cake. Cut your thawed cake in to 1-inch slices and then use a cookie cutter to make your footballs. I didn’t have a football cookie cutter, so I used a round one to create a football shape.

DSC_6753-002

Insert tines of a plastic fork carefully into bottom of your football to avoid breaking the cake. Transfer your cake forks to cookie sheet and freeze for 20 minutes.

DSC_6756-001

Microwave your canned frosting 20 – 30 seconds, heating and stirring until the texture has a smooth consistency and that of lightly whipped cream. Remove cake from freezer and holding the plastic fork, dip into melted frosting to cover, allowing excess frosting to drip back into bowl. Press the bottom of the football against the rim of the bowl to remove excess frosting.

DSC_6761-001

Microwave  5 – 10 seconds more as needed if frosting becomes too thick for dipping. Place your dipped footballs on a wire rack to allow frosting to set.

Note: I used Pillsbury Creamy Supreme Frosting as pictured above. Avoid using a whipped-style variety canned frosting that can break down when heated in the microwave.

DSC_6790-001

Add laces to your football cake pops with vanilla frosting or melted white chocolate. Gently remove footballs from wire rack. I used a knife to help pry them up so the cake pops don’t break from any frosting that sticks when you lift the forks.

DSC_6812-002

I used some faux grass from the craft store on top a styrofoam base to hold the forks for serving and then added some Panther blue chocolate candy (Sixlets from Party City in Caribbean Blue) to surround the grass “field” for a little team color and sweet ending.

Over the top! So very cute. I’ll cheer for your Panthers, since I don’t have a home team in the game.

Thanks for sharing

That sign is hilarious Mary! Your football cake pops are perfect for rooting football fans, perfect for grabbing in between plays, already on a fork and ready to eat! The way you cut the shapes was very brilliant, and I keep forgetting that you can buy colored candies in bulk at PC, how perfect for your Pounding Panthers party! We will be watching and rooting for our NC Southern neighbors!

Oh my! I love this post!!! That video is absolutely wonderful….whether you are a Panthers fan or not you have to love the effort and fun that went into making it! The cake pops are so cool…and easy which is always good! Yes, we are Panthers fans! One of our daughters cheered at UNC (when Tre Boston was there) and she now lives in Sweden. She will be staying up late (6 hours ahead of us) and watch the game at a local pub that will stay open all night for the game. She is a Panthers fan! Go Panthers! Keep Pounding!!!

    Mary!!!! I love them!!
On a side note, I’m born and raised in Auburn and you know cam was our QB, Heisman Trophy winner here at Auburn. My nephew was the starting center as a true freshman and for 4 years 2007-2010. His senior year he was the only center Cam took a snap from and they remain good friends. Cam is the nicest guy and truthfully…he really is a big kid and as nice as he appears to be. We LOVE him!!!

Oh Mary…what a hoot!! These are just the cutest & easiest idea you’ve come up with yet!
I’d never heard the expression nor the origin of “Keep Pounding” so you’ve educated me as well as inspired me today.
I won’t tell my CO. sister & nieces who I’m secretly rooting for on Sunday. I might send them the sign, though. LOL

These will be a perfect addition for my superbowl party. And as a Raleighite, you know we’ll be loud and proud for our Panthers! My local Harris Teeter had a few Panther products on clearance a few weeks ago so I got lucky and grabbed a few things. Fun post!

  16. February 5, 2016 at 1:19 pm

I don’t follow football, but if I did, I would cheer for the Panthers since I have deep roots in North Carolina… the football cake pops are just too cute!

    Keep Pounding, Panthers!

I might be the only Bronco fan here, but I do appreciate all of your enthusiasm for your team. We needed some diversity anyway. The football cake pops are a great idea, quick and easy. May the best team win. Go Broncos!

    Hi Mary,

I’ve wondered if you guys are as excited as we are about the Super Bowl — we are so pumped!!! This has been an amazing year for the Panthers, and something just told me halfway through the season that they would wind up at the Big Game this year. When I watch how well these guys play as a team, I can see that the “Keep Pounding” slogan is in their hearts.

I love your football cake pops; thanks for showing us how to make them. :) Enjoy your weekend and go Cardiac Cats!!

    Hugs,

    Denise

Hi Mary, We will be cheering for the Panthers too! Love the video, especially the kid with the panther blue hair! Pops are so cute and clever, and anything with frosting is a winner in my book! Now I understand the Keep Pounding mantra too and I think it is so inspiring! Most of all I’m looking forward to enjoying the commercials. Linda

  23. February 5, 2016 at 7:00 pm

I’m sure you’re excited for the game Mary! I’ve been rooting for Carolina ever since the Eagles were plucked early on… Although I have to say Peyton going out with a win wouldn’t be a bad thing either. So I guess I’m really only hoping for a win in my block pool:@) Enjoy the weekend and your cake pops!

Haha, what a great idea. I love how you thought outside of the box. I recently made some halloween lollipops and would love for you to check them out :)

Love the idea – I made these for this past superbowl party and they were a hit! The only thing I did different was that I served them as little football cakes (didn’t have the forks) They were snatched up so quickly and will be an annual treat for future superbowl parties! Thanks so much for posting!

      January 29, 2018 at 9:12 pm

How did you dip the cake into the icing without using the forks?

      • January 29, 2018 at 9:14 pm

I did use the forks: “Remove cake from freezer and holding the plastic fork, dip into melted frosting to cover, allowing excess frosting to drip back into bowl. Press the bottom of the football against the rim of the bowl to remove excess frosting.”

      • Joy
        February 5, 2018 at 11:24 pm

I used a can of Betty Crocker frosting, and simply put the whole container in the microwave. This made the frosting smooth enough to just pour over the cakes. So, I didn’t actually dip them.

  35. February 2, 2018 at 10:44 am

Well, our Panthers didn’t make it to the “Big Game” this year, but we still love them and are proud of them!! But if you love football, you watch to the end, regardless of who is playing. I’m so excited to have found this idea! Can’t wait to make these football cake pops for our family party. Thank you for sharing and #KeepPounding!

Hi, I am making these for my Superbowl party tomorrow but do I need to refrigerate them until I serve them or should I leave them out overnight?

    • February 3, 2018 at 5:08 pm

You can leave them out overnight. You can cover them with plastic wrap once the frosting has set. Enjoy! 🏈

  38. February 3, 2018 at 8:11 pm

These are so cute. My grandson is a big football fan. These are perfect for Game Night or week-end snacks. Please share on my Sunday’s Best linkup. Starts every Saturday night at 8:00 pm EST. I’m pinning this one.

Will definitely be trying these for our Superbowl party.

I don’t have a microwave, do you think I can use my double boiler.

    • October 21, 2018 at 4:01 pm

Hi, I haven’t tried a double boiler but probably if you make keep an eye on it and remove the frosting from the heat when it’s the right consistency. Avoid using a whipped-style variety canned frosting that can break down when heated.
