Happy May 1st! I’m celebrating with a May Day Basket, hanging on our dock post instead of a doorknob!
I’ve been Singing the Wildflower Blues this week, in praise of Bachelor Buttons, also know as Cornflowers, blooming in the field next to my Potting Shed.
Ox-eye daisy, a common roadside daisy, popped up this week to join the Bachelor Buttons, free for the picking.
Both are considered noxious weeds since they’re so invasive. . .
But ideal for a dockside May Day Basket with a nod to the charming and forgotten tradition of filling a basket with flowers to leave on your neighbor’s or friend’s door on the first day of May.

Yes, it’s so nice to see such lovely flowers can’t wait until they start popping up! My daughter (6) keeps bringing me bouquets of Violet’s which are very pretty too. She’s a sweetheart.
My grandma gave me a pack of bachelor buttons. I had no idea they were related to cornflower. The pack I have are annuals and look just a tad different than their wild cousin. Thanks for the pretty pics!

I love your basket and those wildflowers..the only wildflower in our backyard right now is the wild mustard in the farm field behind us and those will soon be gone to have soy beans or corn to replace them..cold rain all day yesterday so hopefully today we will get some sun..I love May..I am preparing for our girls May Crowning Luncheon on Wednesday..too bad we don’t have those daisies & cornflowers to add to our ceremony..enjoy your day!! 🌺🌼🌸

Mary, I’d love to have that basket of Bachelor Buttons and Ox-eye Daisies hanging on my door. What a simple, beautiful way to welcome May! I love this tradition and plan to deliver some May baskets later today. When I was teaching, if we were in school on May 1st I’d have my students hang paper cones of simple little blooms on the door of their past year’s kindergarten teacher. They loved the mystery of doing this anonymously. It’s such a simple, sweet thing to do for others.

Back in my “grade-school days” in a one room school house attended by my grandfather, father, etc. we always had May baskets and a May Pole with colored crepe paper streamers. I luv your wildflower basket!! franki

Growing up in upstate NY, we always delivered May Day baskets to our neighbors. Here in St. Louis, where I live now, people look at me like I’m nuts. Most have never heard of May Day. Your basket is beautiful and I love wild flowers. I planted some earlier this Spring. I hope they grow!

How delightful Mary! A May day basket on the pier is such a cute idea! You’ve inspired me to do some red white and blue on our pier for the summer holidays and decorate for the boat parade that is always going by. Your basket is adorable, and wild flowers must be nature’s apology for weeds :)

A most beautiful way to start off the Month of May with that gorgeous May Day basket….I love wildflowers….I love how the sides of the roads, especially in NC are adorned with them….
So beautiful you want to lay down in it but DON”T! My daughter-in-law laid down in a field of forget me nots in Texas for a photo right before her wedding and she got poison ivy! Poor thing she’s in Scotland on a honeymoon with poison ivy!!
How can any beautiful wildflowers be called a noxious weed? I know here in Texas, though most of us love blue bonnets, I have read that the ranchers don’t like them because the cattle won’t eat them and they can fill up their fields as well. I always look forward to spring here and all the beautiful flowers along the roadside. I’m surprised the bachelor buttons don’t pop up around here.
