Happy Sunday! I’m taking you along on a trip to Maine to enjoy some beautiful coastal scenery, lobster and lighthouses!
This was our first visit to Maine and it was more beautiful than we imagined. We spent 5 days there, just long enough for a taste and to whet our appetite for a return trip! We flew into in Portland to spend two nights, then drove up Coastal Highway U.S. 1, making a few stops along the way oohing and aahing over the scenery, before arriving in Bar Harbor and on to Bangor to fly home. A perfect getaway to escape our September 80 degree weather and enjoy some seasonal fall 50 and 60 degree temperatures.

Pemaquid Point Light, commissioned in 1827 by President John Quincy Adams and the lighthouse depicted on the Maine quarter.
The views will take your breath away!
Rockland Harbor Breakwater Light
Walk across the almost mile long granite breakwater that took almost two decades to build, to reach the lighthouse. Tip: Go at low tide so you’re less likely to get wet walking the granite pier.
We visited Maine the last week in September, after the summer tourists were gone, before the lobster shacks close for the season and before the leaf peeping season begins.
I can only imagine how beautiful the leaves will be when they turn and reflect along the water.

Our most memorable and delicious lobster experience was at McLoons Lobster or* Lobstah* Shack on Spruce Head Island.
Enjoy your lobster roll or dinner on a picnic table by the water . . .
Watch them pulling up lobsters while you wait, enjoying the scenery and salt air!
I took over 600 photos which I’m still editing and we spent a day (way too short!) visiting Acadia National Park, enjoying the beautiful scenery. More photos to come!
We have sunshine today but had a wet couple of days with Hurricane Matthew bringing us some much-needed rain and fortunately without the flooding like the eastern part of North Carolina. If you were in Matthew’s path, I hope you’re safe from rising waters!

Gorgeous photos of a gorgeous part of the U.S.! We too visited Maine this exact week last year and it’s perfect, since all the summer vacationers are gone and the leaf peepers haven’t quite arrived yet! We were told that all the cruise ships end their stops in Bar Harbor by the first weekend in October, so the downtown isn’t nearly as busy as well. We also stopped in Camden and Freeport where we visited the L.L. Bean flagship store that’s open 24 hrs! Acadia National Park was probably our favorite stop and you’re right, a few days are needed to take advantage of all it has to offer.🏞👌🏻

Thank you for the beautiful pictures…here in Portland, Oregon area we have rain and wind this morning! I visited the coast of Maine several years ago heading south from Portland instead…loved the scenery (stayed near Portland Head lighthouse) and the beautiful colonial architecture. Glad you didn’t get the brunt of Matthew!
Such beautiful photos thanks for sharing them, they brought back great memories of a vacation my parents took us on in 1960, still appears as quaint as it did then. We live in northeastern North Carolina and are still experiencing the last bands of Matthew. We are so thankful for no major damage.. While we still have power there are parts of our small town which do not. It was so nice to see pictures of beautiful blue sky, brightened my morning. Thanks be to God on this Sunday morning.
Mary, I’m soooo happy that you loved Maine!! The coast is unbelievably beautiful and unspoiled in many places. I was going to suggest that you try the horseback riding in Acadia. We always enjoyed that during our visits! I will have a list for you of the many things you might enjoy seeing next time you make it to New England! Our leaves are just beginning to turn as they are very late this year, so you still have time to come back and see them! :) Your photos are so gorgeous — they could be used by the Maine tourism industry. You will definitely need to go back to get pictures of the leaves when they change color.
Maine is one of my families favorite vacation destinations. We spent a week there this past May, although it is usually in the Fall when we go. We are actually going up tomorrow just to go to the Stonewall Kitchen in Ogunquit. It’s only a few hours from where I live. We have to stock up on their delicious jams, jellies, etc. for Christmas gifts and for ourselves! They have a great restaurant at the Ogunquit store too. L.L.Bean is also a great place to visit, they have two life size Moose with intertwined antlers in a display that is amazing. Thank-you for your always beautiful photos and post. Mary, I am so glad you enjoyed our beautiful state of Maine!!! I was so lucky to have lived right next to the “Two Lights Lighthouse” in Cape Elizabeth for 32 years in a home my father built for me. From Sunrise to Sunset Maine is a spectacular place. The smells and sounds of the ocean are constantly changing, and on top of all this we are uncrowded and a very safe place to live and breathe! My ancestors on both my Mom and Dad’s side go back to the great migration from Massachusetts in 1620-1640 and they came to Maine as farmers and fisherman in the early 1700’s. Needless to say I love my home!! Your pictures were spectacular!!

You were up here in Maine! You certainly captures some of our best. Next time, if you do Rt 1 well worth the stop Red’s Eats in Wiscasset. Best lobster roll in the state. More that a whole lobster in every roll and just lobster meat. But you can ask for drawn butter or mayo on the side. Then head north again on Rt 1 and turn right heading down into Boothbay Harbor. You will love the Maine Botanical Gardens. (The Haney Hillside garden is named for my next door neighbor) Well worth the trip.

We love Maine! Next trip, check out Perkins Cove, near Ogonquit. You will think you have landed right in the middle of Cabot Cove, expecting to see Angela Lansbury riding her bicycle around the next corner! THere is a footbridge over a little inlet, with lovely shops & restaurants, and it is along the famed Marginal Way coastal footpath. You captured the quintiessential Maine in your lovely photos!

I loved this post! I have been going to Maine since 1969 and have often stayed at Cliff House just south of Ogunquit on Bald Head Cliffs. I usually eat at Barnacle Billys in Perkins Cove. I love Maine!
What a wonderful getaway Mary, so refreshing after this long hot summer- looks like the weather was picture perfect. I am always drooling over fresh Maine lobster recipes and photos, and you know I LOVED your lobster trap and buoy photos! So glad you had a great time!

We have friends who have a home in Belfast, Maine, and visited them a few years ago. I would love to rent a home and spend a month somewhere in Maine. Many friends from Austin have been escaping to Maine for summer months. We need to join them. ‘-)

Wow! I just shared your brilliant photos with my husband, we spent our honeymoon in Ogonquit Maine forty two years ago. We always said we want to go back. We nearly made it this summer during a visit to Ottawa but there were too many family commitments and not enough time. I spent my summers as a child in Maine and have so many happy memories. We just came back from Cape CodWe stayed on the water in Wellfleet. Then we went to Nantucket. But I love, love, love Maine as well. To me, there is nothing like the New England coastline. Those blue waters and rocky shores are magical.
Great pictures! I had the privilege of growing up on the coast of southern Maine in the ’50-’60s. We used to ride our bikes to do our homework on the beach after school. Even tho I am only in NH, I don’t get back to my hometown nearly as often as I would like. It killed me to have to sell my parents’ home where I grew up.Sometimes life just gets in the way of our dreams …

We have traveled to this beautiful state multiple times & love it more each time! Bar Harbor is stunning but so are all the beautiful little coastal towns. And THE LOBSTER! Oh, my…the stuff dreams are made of!

Thank you for the beautiful photos. My mother and father-in-law lived on the Maine coast. My husband and I live in southern California and we went to visit them as often as possible. They are both gone now and it brought tears to my eyes seeing your gorgeous pictures and remembering the great times we had there.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful pictures of Maine and it’s rocky coastline. I’ve been there twice–once to visit with a former sister-in-law and her husband in the Portland area. The other time was to stay with a girlfriend whose husband was stationed in Maine. When I traveled there it was in August–just delightful.
A visit to Maine has been one of the items on my bucket list I haven’t been able to mark off…One of our ancestors, with a very interesting history, settled in Blue Hill, Maine 220 years ago and his home is still preserved as a ‘memorial museum’… I still hope to visit it some day…
