I’m adding a little bit of fall and pumpkins around the Potting Shed!
It’s starting to feel like fall here in North Carolina! Our daytime temperatures are in the 70s, dipping down to 40s and 50s at night. There’s nothing like the early morning nip in the air after a long summer of energy-zapping heat and humidity to energize you. I’m ready to pile on the blankets, pillows and cozy fall layers!
The window boxes are in transition with the summer annuals waning.
The ornamental sweet potato vine is still growing, but looking a little worn and ragged.
The mandevilla vine planted in May has climbed to frame the two sides of windows with glossy green leaves and white blooms.
I planted it on a trellis between my window boxes and added some twine secured to the siding for it to climb. I was hoping it would make around all three sides before it was nipped by frost. It looks like I’ll have to plant it a little earlier next year and give some extra liquid encouragement and fertilizer to reach the third side. :)
I added some pumpkins and ornamental kale to the window boxes, tucking them in around the last of the summer annuals. . .pentas, angelonia that’s waning, and coleus that’s still growing strong with its vibrant red leaves.
I hung some Indian corn on the corners of the window box. . . I’m guessing it will take the squirrels about 30 minutes to find it. :)
Pumpkin season is my favorite time of year. . .smooth, warty, pink, orange, gray and white, I like them all.
A pot of two-tone mums helps make the transition to fall, blending the purples and brighter colors of summer with the burnished and deeper hues of fall.
Do you pick your pumpkins by their stems? I love the curled or long stems on pumpkins.

Wow, You should not have to do any arm strengthening exercises today lifting all those pumpkins. I love all the colors and varieties. Mums and pumpkins with all your lush greenery gets me in the mood. I’m loving the cooler temps too.
Our stores haven’t gotten many pumpkins in yet.Looking forward to buying some and decorating.

Be glad your squirrels aren’t eating your potato vine. They ate mine while I was gone. I think they know when I’m not home!
Your shed looks so good! Your mandevilla look terrific compared to mine. I think my magnolia has grown so large (next to), that the tropical vines can’t seem to get enough water & nutrients to grow tall like they used to on my trellis. I’ve not had really good looking ones for a few years now. Yes, I love the morning chill in the air too – it makes for great walks. I laughed at the Indian corn comment – was thinking the same thing, and yes, I pick some of my pumpkins by the stems! All your textiles are great fall additions.

Very pretty Mary. Love, Love, LOVE fall – pumpkins are my favorite. LOVE the Cinderella variety, and the regular ones too. White are also pretty neat. Not a fan of the warty ones though lol. Have a great day!
We didn’t get any potato vine in this year…Yours is GORGEOUS. We had a three late frosts and all the nurseries were hit. So I miss it’s luscious lime-ness. LOL, looks so good with pumpkins. Love your potting shed. Thanks for the tour. Sandi

Dear Mary, your pumpkins are unique as fingerprints, and they are so darling. The one with the bumps (a pox against spooky creatures?) is so cute. The warm, patterned pillows are heralds of cooler weather and shorter days. When I visit you, I always learn something about art and style–I am drinking up how you repeat colors (bench, window boxes, Indian corn, flowers) so beautifully. Your pumpkins are divine in their diversity- love, love, love them- each and everyone!! I look at the stems too, they add so much character to a simple pumpkin. Hi Mary, I read a tip on squirrels eating pumpkins and Indian corn – spray them with furniture polish to keep the squirrels away. I’m trying that this year – so far, so good!
I have got to remember mandivilla next year! I adore your Fall dressed potting shed. I, too, love all the pumpkins especially the warty ones:) I got one this year too. Your styling of this area is fabulous, but then you are the master at this. Thank you for sharing your inspiration and talents.

Your potting shed looks so happy, like it’s hugging armloads of pumpkins! I am a fellow pumpkin lover too Mary, and several seem to hop in my car every time I go shopping! Life is short, fill it with pumpkins!!

Yes Mary, I pick my pumpkins out by stems too. I took my 4 grandchildren to pick out pumpkins last week and one of the 4 children picked one out without a stem. I made them put it back (lol). We do have pumpkin “rules.” Have a great day. Mary
Or the deer!! I have a vintage wheelbarrow at my gate entering our property filled with only natural goodies for fall. I put some Indian corn in it one night before sunset. Next morning it was stripped of all kernels but the cobs had never been moved. I looked down and lots of deer tracks were all around the wheelbarrow!!! I laughed thinking how clever they must have thought they were!
