Enjoying a little bird watching, fishing and scenery.
We rented a house on Harkers Island for our stay. You find photos of a previous visit, here.
I always enjoy looking at boat names. . .
Sadie Lady and Boss are hard-working fishing boats. . .
Along with the Mattie Marie.
Here’s a hard-working fisherman taking a break and enjoying a little November sunshine :)
Fishing widows must be pretty common on the Crystal Coast. . .hence a Sea Wife ;)
We spent a day in Beaufort, NC where I spied this wrought iron gate with sailboats.
We won the weather lottery three weeks after Hurricane Matthew blew through, with sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s.
Pots are still blooming along the dock on the waterfront.
It’s always fun the see the boats at the marina and their home ports, from Bristol, Rhode Island. . .
to Walkers Island. . .
And Portland, Maine.
Bikes are for rent. . .pick your favorite herb, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary or Thyme. . .
Basil
or Lavender.
Or reel in a Mullet, Marlin or Trout ;)
We took the ferry over to Shackleford Banks for the day for a little surf fishing and with hopes to see some of the 100+ Shackleford Banks Wild Horses who have resided there for hundreds of years.
Success! I spied two and stalked them with my zoom lens grazing on the grasses.
Whether you reel in any fish or not, it’s hard to beat the view staring across at the Cape Lookout Lighthouse.
Cape Lookout Lighthouse is painted with directional diamonds~ white diamonds facing east & west, and black diamonds, north & south.
It’s the only major lighthouse that operates during the day with its rotating 1,000-watt beacon flashing every 15 seconds 24 hours a day.
15 seconds seems like a long time when trying to hold your camera steady to capture the flashing light ;)
I have a love affair with all bodies of water. And this pictorial just seems like coming home to me. Though on Lake Michigan we don’t have Pelicans, we do have voracious cormorants. Love all you pictures, you have captured the essence of the sea, or inland sea to me. Thanks, Sandi
Looks like my kinda place. The bike plates are awesome and your adventure to see the wild horses. What a trip…thanks for sharing your beautiful photos.
Your photos are incredible Mary, the one of the snoozing fat pelican is simply stunning! LOVE the bicycles! I’m sure you had a lovely weekend with beautiful weather and views-
Jenna
Beautiful images!
Home ports? Used to be my fave part of sailing…perusing other boats on the seas to see where everyone was from. Just as others liked to see ours….Uncertain, TX!!! We had more comments and “where the hell is that?” To which we always had to respond…”we aren’t sure!!”
We made many friends because of those conversations. Blew Bayou was our baby…we miss her so!
Mary, Your photos are so gorgeous! Tracking those horses must have been fun. I always love looking at the boat names too and thinking about how far they have traveled. And I do know how hard it is to capture the lighthouse beacon! I waited for the red one to flash at a Cape Cod light recently and had to take several photos to get it. That lighthouse with the diamonds is so pretty! I could definitely stare at it for a very long time in that sunshine. And I’ll take the Rosemary or Lavender bike please! Linda
Enjoyed your waterviews today. You are visiting one of my favorite places, Beaufort. I sent today’s post to a dear friend who lives there. Thanks for sharing your weekend.
The Crystal Coast is always our beach destination – love the area, Atlantic Beach, Morehead City and Beaufort. The dock there is always beautiful, especially at sunset. Looks like you had fabulous weather. I was in the NC mountains at Lake Junaluska – lots of smoke and haze.
Beautiful. I was just in Nags Head two weekends ago. It is so lovely there. Sooo many seashells!!
I did see some of the after results of Matthew – mostly stairs washed away. Great pictures – thanks for sharing!!!
Love the pictures….especially the boat names…I have a friend who is originally from Beaufort and her family still lives there..her brother-in-law is a fisherman and while filming Forrest Gump, they used his fishing boat for the boat parts of the movie… The water in your pics looks glass like or mirror like..signs of a good photographer!!! 🐡🐠🐟⚓️
Such beautiful images of the great Crystal Coast…..looks like you had a wonderful time with friends!….I so love that you found the horses and was able to get some fantastic photos….and great photo of the “fisherman on the pier”
