Potting Shed: Sprucing Up the Window Boxes for Christmas

dsc_7498-001

Happy Friday!

I’m puttering around and gathering greenery to deck the halls this week.

dsc_7454-001

We had some much-needed rain last weekend, so I’m a little further behind than I’d like to be, but I was glad to see the rain!

dsc_7453-001

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas around the Potting Shed. I spent some time this week sprucing up the window boxes.

dsc_7531-001

I cut back the spent annuals and gave the dirt in the boxes a thorough soaking. I added the greenery using the soil to anchor the stems to hold them in place and keep them fresh longer.

dsc_7452-001

I did the same with a pair of pots to flank the bench.

dsc_7463-001

Cedar, cypress, pine and magnolia fill the window boxes along with some giant pine cones I found at Hobby Lobby.

dsc_7448-001

And I added some rusty bell garland to spill over and jingle its way through the greenery next to some tartan ribbon.

dsc_7533-001

An embroidered pillow from Pottery Barn several years ago came out to roost on my bench. . .

dsc_7523-001

dsc_7527-1-001

My Frog Footman is serving up shatterproof red ornaments and pine cones, instead of tarts or birdseed. . .

dsc_7514-001

And dressed in a tartan bow for Christmas.

dsc_7487-001

I found miniature trees in the outdoor garden area at Walmart for $9. They have a little silver glitter for some holiday sparkle for the holiday season.

dsc_7510-001

I removed them from the outer pots they came in and placed them in some long tom terra cotta pots.

dsc_7502-001

Wellies are decorated with greenery, privet berries and a bird’s nest. . .

dsc_7457-001

dsc_7535-1-001

And the temperature is plunging this weekend, I need to fill up the bird feeders!

dsc_7505-001

Hope you’ll be warm and cozy in your nest this weekend!

dsc_7530-001

Are you still decking the halls or have you finished your Christmas decorating?

Oh my those window boxes are beyond stunning. Perfect in every way! Glad to hear about your well deserved rain. We had rain here in Florida for the first time in six weeks. Welcomed but my outdoor Christmas lights shorted out for awhile. Happy weekend decorating.🌲🌲🌲🌲

Absolutely gorgeous. This definitely puts me in the Spirit of the Season. You never fail to amaze us with your talent! Happy Holidays!

Lovely decorations, Mary!! I must make a note to go get at least one of those little trees. It would look darling peeking out of a fabric bag I recently made.
You were smart to BUY the big pinecones…I almost asphixiated myself, baking some in a low temp oven to get them to open up (&kill bugs). The smell of turpentine was overwhelming!!!
The Frog Prince looks adorable with his plaid bow…love ALL your plaids!

  12. December 9, 2016 at 8:05 am

I just love this. If we had more moderate climate, I’d definitely be decking my outdoors more (maybe it’s a good thing we don’t – less pressure). I do love magnolia in any arrangement and those boxes look great, especially with the plaid ribbon.Last year I made a market basket arrangement for indoors, but it really needed to be in the sunroom or outside. I still haven’t tackled it, but you inspire me. There’s still time! Happy weekend, Mary.

Mary, the frog prince holding his bowl of ornaments cracks me up! So froggin’ cute!! Love the rusty bells, magnolia leaves and plaid ribbon winding through the boxes and the so so pretty bird pillow on your little red bench! It looks like a Christmas card!

Mary – Greetings from Fort Mill, SC – Love the window boxes!!! You have inspired me with your beautiful plaid décor and this year that is my theme. Like you, because of the weather, I too am a bit behind, but I have a very ambitious weekend planned.

Blessings and stay warm and toasty!

Love all your gardening shed decorations – so appropriate. One question – do you leave that beautiful bird pillow out when it rains? It is so very pretty – wondered if it stayed out all the time/

  21. December 9, 2016 at 11:57 am

Those window boxes are decorated so beautiful!! I love everything you decorate at The Potting Shed! Prince Frog is adorable. My window boxes are decorated at My Potting Shed but don’t look as pretty as yours. I used snowmen, snowflakes, and snowballs in mine. Stay warm, we are suppose to be 24degrees tonight.

I am always so inspired by your posts. A potting shed for gardening and decorating is one of my dreams. I’m right down the road in Charlotte, and love the connection. Wish I had a good source for cypress and cedar….is yours from your yard, the nearby fields and woods?

    • December 9, 2016 at 3:46 pm

Thanks Carol! Yes I’m fortunate and have access to lots of greenery in our yard and the field next to my Potting Shed :)

  25. December 9, 2016 at 2:54 pm

It is all wonderful. I wish I could do more outside but our weather is not cooperating. It is FREEZING cold here, very windy too. Thank goodness, I have finished decorating. I am on the house tour again this year so am trying to make it all pretty! Have a beautiful weekend, Mary!

Nice, Mary! I love the sleigh bells in your window boxes, and Mr. Froggy is the cutest!

  35. December 10, 2016 at 1:35 am

Mary, the window boxes are so lovely and Christmasy. Love the frog.
I think She Sheds should place ads on your blog because all of us have ‘shed’ envy.
Does it ever rain in shed land ? We would be so disappointed if it wasn’t perfect as usual. Great photos.

Still decorating outside as the smoke from fires (I live in western NC) and then the much needed rain kept me inside.

I always love your window boxes, but the addition of tartan ribbon and rusty bells make this year’s my favorite. As always, thanks for the inspiration.

Oh, so pretty! Love it all, especially the rusty bells and the tartan ribbon weaving through the greenery. I’m way behind due to my husband’s hospital stay, but hopefully tomorrow, the Thanksgiving items will be put away and out comes Christmas and winter! I’m settling in for a “long winter’s nap” – the forecast is calling for 6 -8 maybe 10″ of snow tonight! Hello Winter!

  40. December 11, 2016 at 8:01 am

We have the snow dump forecast also—–we did do a few lights outside a week ago—but this year, it is reeled back for sure. Hoping to have the porch ready after it’s shoveled. Your shed is gorgeous…and the greens are so varied and well, green. Beautiful! Merry Christmas! Sandi
