Cabbage Floral Centerpiece DIY

I’m serving up flowers with my cabbage instead of corned beef for St. Patrick’s Day with a cabbage vase centerpiece!

You can use any large head of cabbage for your floral centerpiece. I chose a savoy cabbage, with its dark veining texture and color, to pair with a Bordallo Pinheiro plate.  A purple cabbage would make a pretty and colorful vase for a spring floral arrangement!

Trim the bottom of your cabbage so it sits level. Remove and save any loose outer leaves that aren’t too wilted.

I used floral pins to reattach the outer leaves to the cabbage.

Instead of hollowing out the cabbage and filling them with floral foam like hereI attached the wet floral to the top of the cabbage with floral picks using the same technique with my blooming pumpkin. It easier than hollowing out the dense center of the cabbage and there’s no risk of cutting yourself with your knife.

Add your flowers and greenery to your wet floral foam.

I used my green and white flowers from my Irish Blessings table . . .Alstroemeria, Mums, Daisies, Stock and Green Trick Dianthus, the texture reminiscent of Irish moss.

I found this Belleek Irish Cottage Teapot on eBay for a great price a couple of months ago.

Perfect to enjoy a cup of Irish breakfast tea and a Grace’s Irish Oatmeal Biscuit in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Your cabbage is brilliant Mary! It’s a pot of gold! I was looking at my big fat cabbage yesterday and decided to give it a go, but just carved out a small part at the top and filled it with mini blooms…you are so smart to just plop the oasis right on top and use pins to secure the leaves. It looks beautiful with your green and white blooms and lovely tea pot. Have a happy St. Patrick’s day filled with Irish goodies, rainbows and luck!

Oh Mary! This is so absolutely beautiful! I might have to resort to this…my husband planted decorative cabbages in the landscaping out front and I am itching to cut them and bring them in for a centerpiece! He keeps putting me off! This is absolutely perfect for Spring!

Love your Belleek irish cottage teapot and the wee little Bordallo bowl filled with a shamrock biscuit. It is ingenious to use the floral foam on top of the cabbage for your arrangement to avoid cutting yourself and save time, too. Your recipe collage is mouth watering.Great post today as always.
Mary. I used your edible glue recipe to glue birdseed to a birdhouse and my birds have enjoyed it so much. It’s time to do it again. Thanks for the DIY birdseed feeder post a while back. And on another note, I have so many sheets to launder after my attempts to save my hydrangeas.

What a great presentation, Mary. I like the twist of adding the picks to the top so you didn’t have to hollow it out.

How creative and that teapot is just too cute! We will watch our favorite St. Patrick’s Day movie, “The Quiet Man” with John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, Barry Fitzgerald and Ward Bond. Filmed in 1952 in Ireland by John Ford, it is a classic, winning 2 Oscars including Best Director. If you haven’t seen it, you need to rent it. A real winner! “Top of the mornin’ to ye”! :)

Absolutely perfect way to use a head of cabbage and beautiful too!! I have collected many pieces of Belleek over many years; but, I don’t have a teapot like yours. I must start checking eBay more diligently for sure. I have enjoyed all the St. Patrick’s Day related posts and have archived them for future use also. Thank-you for all of the spectacular photos and posts. A very Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all of you!

Very pretty Mary, it looks like you’re all set for St. Pat’s! I snuck out at lunch and bought a couple Irish Cream k-cups for afternoon coffee at work:@)

Mary, great idea to not have to hollow it out. This arrangement looks so fresh. It definitely says spring to me. Hope your St. Pat’s Day was full of green. Enjoy the weekend.

Beautiful Mary! Like the idea of adding the florist foam to the top of the cabbage vice carving it out. Much easier. I’m so ready for warm weather. Here in SE Virginia it has been a roller coaster of warm then frigid temps. I’m trying to grow Bells of Ireland from seed this spring and the weather is making it difficult. I always love your inspiring posts. Vikki in VA.
