The Earth Laughs in Flowers: Happy Earth Day Giveaway!

The Earth laughs in flowers and I’m celebrating Earth Day with a little giveaway in honor of wildflowers and pollinators. Of course if you’re a gardener, every day is Earth Day!

Wildflowers are essential to the survival of the pollinator population. Pollinators such as bees, hummingbirds and butterflies are vital to almost all crops and plants that produce vegetables, fruits and nuts. Pollinators are also vital to plants fed to livestock, as well as to fiber-producing plants, such as cotton.

Wildflowers also support beneficial insects that help your garden with natural pest control.

And flowers absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen, through photosynthesis.

Bachelor Buttons (or Bachelor’s Button) are blooming in my field of dreams next to my Potting Shed.

Also known as Blue Bottle, Blue Bonnet, Blue Bow, Blue Cap, Cornflower, Boutonniere Flower and Basket Flower, this wildflower is easy to grow in many soil types and is native to Europe.

In the southeastern United States, Bachelor Button can be found growing in meadows and fields, is drought-tolerant, self-seeding and therefore aggressive. Here in North Carolina, it’s considered a noxious weed and growing it is prohibited since it quickly displaces other grasses, crops, and native wildflowers . . .but doesn’t the color make your heart sing?

Bees find blue, purple and yellow flowers most appealing. Flat or shallow blossoms, such as daisies, zinnias, asters and Queen Anne’s lace, attract the largest variety of bees. Ox-eye daisy is a common roadside daisy and wildflower. It attracts diverse types of pollinators, including beetles, ants, and moths, as a source of pollen and nectar.

In celebration of Earth Day, I giving away some gardening gloves, wildflower seeds, gardening tools and notecards. The notecards I had printed from photos of my Potting Shed with flower and seed quotes, fitting for Earth Day and a celebration of wildflowers!

The flowers of tomorrow are in the seeds of today.

So many seeds, so little yard.

The earth laughs in flowers.

In addition to the notecards, I’m including wildflowers seeds with 24 favorite wild annuals & perennials including Red Poppy, California Poppy, Purple Coneflower (Echinacea), Wild Lupine and others.

Three sets of 6 notecards (2 of each design) and a package of wildflower seeds will be given away.

I’m also including a pair of gardening gloves (one size fits most!) and wildflower seed pack to be given away to a fourth winner.

The ‘Earth Laughs in Flowers’ mini seed packet containing a custom blend of both annual and perennial wildflowers.

And a Three Piece Garden Tool Set with a mini seed packet to fifth winner.

For a chance to win, leave me a comment telling me your favorite flower or pollinator.

Subscribe by email or follow on Facebook and let me know by comment.

For a third entry, share this giveaway on Pinterest or Facebook and leave an additional comment telling me so.

(The FB sharing button is at the bottom of this post and the Pin/Save button pops up on the upper left corner of each photo.)

The winners will be chosen May 6th.

This giveaway is open to those living in the continental US.

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED.

May all your weeds *bee* wildflowers!

Happy Earth Day!

Thank you for your visit!

My favorite flower is the SUNFLOWER. We live on the gulf coast of Alabama and our neighbor grows them in their field and last year my husband surprised me with two buckets full for our anniversary. I have an old water can like yours and that was one container I used and filled it full of sunflowers. This week late afternoon we noticed a swarm of bees outside near a tree and then discovered they were a colony of honey bees seeking a home. We called a bee keeper who lives near us and he came over the next day but they had moved on. He had hoped to retrieve them. It was very interesting hearing just how he would have done that. I have a great picture of them on the tree but no idea how to share it to your post. Enjoy your blog and would be honored to win your giveaway. Whoever does will receive an earth day blessing.

Lovely Give Away, Mary! So many flowers how do you pick a favorite. Spring holds my heart with the beauties of the daffodils, was my Mother’s favorite too. Summer brings the wonders of the Dahlias. In 2015 a local Vet who is well known in our area for growing the most beautiful of Dahlias had me pickup a lovely box of Dahlias. That summer brought great joy in my garden with the flowers of different varieties throughout the vegetable/flower gardens. Each season brings such beauty around us. Our world is full of colors!! I get so excited when I see your latest post in my email. I would happily move into your potting shed!! I don’t kmow if I can pick just one favorie flower. I’m waiting for the weather to warm up here in the northeast to get some new beds tilled for just random seeds. We live in the woods so have to have all the beds fenced or they just become “salad bowls. I am also awaiting the return of our hummingbirds they hover in front of the windows where I hang their feeders to let me know they’re back. We have also got a hive of honeybees due to arrive shortly. Thank you so much for all the work you do to create such a beautiful blog. Off to pin you.

But having said that I remember my mother walking down to a ditch bank and coming back with a arm full of Queen Ann’s lace and day lilies that she arranged in a big yellow bowl that she placed some chicken wire so she could arrange the Queen Ann lace and day lilies . It was a very large arrangement and it was drop dead gorgeous. Simple, growing in the wild with no human care but put there by God for all to see.

My favorite flower for pollinators is Blue Fortune Agastache, which is in the hyssop family. I couldn’t believe my eyes last summer at the number of bees those blue spires attracted. I made a note to myself last fall to plant it behind my yellow lantana for this summer, 2017.

I adore your field of dreams with the long views of the Batchelor Buttons. Your blog has always been one of my favorites. I live close by in Charlotte. I’m looking forward to seeing how your new perennial garden in front of your garden shed has matured this year and what new plants you will be planting.

  97. April 22, 2017 at 2:57 pm

Your photos are lovely. Wildflowers are my favorites. Here in the Pacific Northwest I love seeing fawn lilies, trilliums and calypso orchids usher in spring. When I was small we lived for a few years in Mendocino County California, which must be the wildflower capitol! I grew up searching the woods and the hillsides for blooms. I still remember where each variety grew, more than 60 years later.

My favorite flower for butterflies is orange Tithonia. Mine is covered with yellow tiger swallowtails all summer. Favorite pollinator is the honey bee who is in such need of friends these days due to give colony collapse .An earth day plea to all your readers .Please stop using pesticides to save our pollinators.

I grow lavender, sage and rosemary in addition to butterfly bush to attract pollinators to my garden because I also grow lemons, limes and kumquats. There’s no better sound to me than the buzzing of bees as they ensure that I will enjoy fresh citrus year-round. I used to have dozens of bees visiting, but with colony collapse, I’m lucky to see a few at a time. Your note cards are adorable. You should market those! Thanks for the chance to win some gardening goodies.

  101. April 22, 2017 at 3:36 pm

I plant zinnias every year. Not only do I love them, but they attract bees, hummingbirds, and the gold finches go crazy plucking off the petals to get to the fresh seeds.

I love daisies and sunflowers! They are such cheery flowers! (I took that quote from a movie!) My best pollinators are my lavender and coneflowers which I also love. Thank you also for the chance to win your beautiful gardening items.

Boy, this is hard! I love Heavenly Blue Morning Glories, Daffodils and Lilacs. Can’t forget Peonies and Hydrangea, hope my Hydrangea bloom this year. I LOVE Hummingbirds, but you have to love Bumble Bees as they defy gravity with their fat little bodies and what is prettier than a Butterfly in flight – so it’s a 3-way split. Today I washed the front and south side of my “not so white” shed. Whew. What were we thinking? A white shed with green trim and we live on a dirt road and it’s at the edge of our woods! But boy her face is shinning tonight. Oddly, the back, which faces the woods isn’t very dirty at all – ha, but the north side makes up for it. So much green mildew from the tree line, I may have to call in reinforcements! LOVE your note cards Mary – are you starting your own line? They’ll be sold out for sure as we ALL LOVE THEM. I’ve pinned so many scenes from your garden shed I know have a book! ha. Thanks – love the garden tools – never can have enough.

Picking a favorite flower is just about impossible. I love so many. Among my favorites: bachelor buttons, lily of the valley, iris, daffodils, tulips, lilacs, peonies and roses, especially the large garden roses. My dream home would have many beautiful flower beds allowing me to pick bouquets to my heart’s content. As long as I am dreaming, I’d have to have a potting shed. MM

Roses are my favorite flower. I love the scent and colors. How can a person decide between bee, hummingbirds and butterflies? Oh my. Bees are so industrious and must be admired for their hard work and devotion. Hummingbirds each have their own little personalities. And butterflies remind me of myself in the garden. Flitting here and there at a leisurely pace enjoying each moment in the garden. I’ve shared your giveaway on Facebook and Pinterest with high hopes my friends and family will follow your beautiful blog and have a chance at winning those beautiful prizes : )

Right now my favorite is Shasta daisies – I planted them from seeds over 30 years ago and since then have divided and shared many clumps. I managed to kill all of my patch one winter by mulching too heavily but was able to dig some of the originals from my mom’s garden to bring back. I moved from my home of 32 years, where they were started, about a year ago and brought some to the new place – they’re blooming now and so cheerful! I’ve got vases of them all through the house – I love that they last up to 10 days and they play well with other flowers – great combined with roses, salvia Victoria, coreopsis and more.

Holy Moley can you take nature pics!!!! I can’t even believe those butterflies – and the butterfly and bee together, haha. What a fantastic giveaway – every single thing is awesome- thank you so much for the opportunity to inspire us to get out there and enjoy this spring’s rebirth! My very favorite flower generally is lavender – it has so many uses and is so awesome!

Though those incredible short-lived peonies are a heart-stopper to be sure. But one rain does ’em in so they aren’t very good at pollenating anything, haha. Happy Earth Day right back to you! I would be delighted to enter. Please forgive me for not having a FB account. (I fear another thing to steal me away from living life – I work blog, game and Pin on a computer. That’s all I can give. I know I would become obsessed, so I don’t even attempt it. Hope that doesn’t keep me from being able to be considered a contestant!) Thanks! Happy spring beauty!!

Like others it is hard to pick just one. My tree peony is about finished blooming. Tulips and lilacs are in full bloom. Love old fashioned flowers-pansy, iris and lily of the valley. If I have to pick I would say pansy; thank you for all your inspirations!!!!

I love coneflowers! They come in so many colors, easy to grow and multiply ever year. The bee’s love them! I just bought a bee house and hung it from a tree in my yard close to my flowers, I can’t wait till everything is in full bloom and the bee’s start buzzing!

I’m a big daylily fan. I have probably 50 varieties in our yard. They are so easy and long lasting. I also love coneflower and sweet autumn clematis. Here in MI the daffodils are just finishing up and tulips are beginning. We have a ways to go before Summer blooms but I’m totally looking forward to it.

My current favorite flower is plumeria, having recently moved to Florida, but I sure miss my Missouri lily-of-the-valley.

My favorite flower is the Geranium–could be my love of all the beautiful window boxes you see when
visiting Austria and Germany. I just discovered your blog and saving lots of your beautiful pictures to Tablescapes.
I would love to win the note cards, as I send lots of “thank you’s” for all the help I receive.

I love Gerbrera Daisies but this year I discovered Lavender plants.
I started a few plants from seed this year and found I truly love starting from seed. The two plants mentioned above I purchased already started, doesn’t make me love them any less.
