Weekend Waterview: How to Keep an Osprey from Nesting on Your Boat

Happy Sunday! Most of you know us, but for those who don’t we’re Chloe & Gracie.  We’re filling in for our Mom this morning who is dog gone tired from gardening chores and lugging the hose around in the heat. She says 90 degrees is way too hot for May! We said we’d fill in for her and guest post this morning  and take you along a pontoon ride to give you a weekend waterview.

We like to boat in the early morning or evening to watch the sunset, when it’s a bit cooler.

This is me, Chloe, riding with my Dad. He lets me sit with him in the captain’s chair which is my favorite place to ride.

We like to check on the osprey nests on the lakeThis mama Osprey is holding her wings out to protect her chicks in her nest.

She thought we were boating too close for comfort even though we were pretty far away and our Mom was just standing up using her zoom lens.

This is an Osprey nest on a boat dock roof. We think it looks likes a slippery slope and would make chick-rearing a challenge. . .

Last summer we saw an osprey nest on a boatwhat a mess. . .

In the US, Osprey are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and moving an active osprey nest violates federal and state laws.

Osprey will return the same nest site every year.

This spring we noticed that the boat owner found a creative way to prevent the Osprey from rebuilding a nest. . .using pool noodles!

It looks like a quite a feat of engineering that kept the osprey from nesting, and saving the paint finish and from having to buy another bimini top!

Best practical and creative use of pool noodles ever!

We like to boat over and see some of our favorite houses on the water. . .

This is our Dad’s favorite house. . .

And these are two of my Mom’s favorites with the landscaping. . .

The one below has water on three sides which makes it a hand’s down favorite.

Thanks for joining us today. . .

Guest blogging is harder work than we thought it would be!

Hope you’re gearing up for some fun in the sun on Memorial Day weekend!

Thank you for your visit!

Great photos, and those houses!! But the best of the best here is that boat owner’s ingenious method of keeping the osprey from returning to his boat to nest – WINNER!

That was FUN – Love boating around the lake to see what everyone is up to! WOW – the ospreys really do make quite a mess with their nests – and they are HUGE! Our lake was much (much) farther north – and we got much smaller birds (usually swallows) nesting in the canopy of the boat hoists….I guess I had nothing to complain about! Thank you so for taking us with –

Beautiful…your pictures tell a story all by itself! I’m envious of your view and sunsets! Love the ending with the American flag…it warms my heart and just in time for Memorial Day!

Love the “castles” on the lake -wow! What a joy it would be to motor around daydreaming about those! The lake is so pretty and the ending shot of our beautiful flag is awesome. I wonder how long it took the pool noodle contraption to be made – pretty smart decoy. Happy Sunday – “day of rest” Mary. :) I plan on doing just that after church. We stained our 2 decks and the potting shed porch this week – I’m pooped. Girls did a great job!

Great job, girls! You two know your way around that beautiful lake. I’m not sure Sadie would be as eager to get on a boat, but maybe. If we still had our sailboat, she would have to get used to it.
Thanks for the update on the osprey nest. I remember when your mom showed us this last year. What a mess for that boat owner! I think his solution was a good idea!
Happy Memorial Day weekend. It’s gorgeous here in Texas, but we won’t be on the lake, just hanging out on our breezy terrace.

Dog Gone Great Hosting, Thank-you Chloe and Gracie!! Gorgeous photos of some magnificent homes. That is a strange, yet inspired, contraption by the boat owner. I wonder what those Osprey thought when they found their nesting site unavailable?

We live on the gulf coast of Alabama, more specifically on a creek and love boat riding out our creek to the bay to observe the osprey nests. There was a contest a few years ago to name an osprey couple and I won! I named them Josephine and Elberta (the community/town we live in) but they have shortened them to Josie and Elbert.

Thanks for the fun tour, Chloe and Gracie. Fabulous houses and very interesting contraption to discourage the osprey from nesting.

Thanks for the fun boat ride Mary, we were rained in all weekend watching tennis and golf on TV. I loved seeing the solution your creative neighbor came up with for his osprey nest prevention, that is quite a sculpture! Ironically, he still can’t use his boat I guess, you couldn’t possibly ride around with that thing? I hope you had a restful Sunday!

No, he could probably take it down since nesting season is already underway, but it sure beats buying a new Bimini top. ;)

Chloe and Grace, no doubt you’re awesome job of guest blogging earned you both a summer’s worth of your Mom’s homemade treats! Great job, girls!

Great job Chloe and Gracie! The pool noodles are definitely an engineering feat and those homes on the water are gorgeous!

  27. May 22, 2017 at 8:15 am

Thank you Chloe and Gracie for guest posting for your “dog gone” tired Mom! I enjoyed seeing the homes, and especially seeing the creative use of noodles on the boat. How fun for you to enjoy your weekend boat ride!

Hi Chloe and Gracie, I always enjoy your posts so much, and it’s so nice of you to take such good care of your Mom! I’m sure she appreciates it after all that hose dragging in your southern temps so she can nap while you take over! I was just wondering about those osprey from last year and that poor boat! I hope this ingenious contraption sent the osprey looking elsewhere, although if it’s the same bird who chose that slippery roof I think she will have to keep looking for next year! Hope you enjoy some nice weather for Memorial Day! Linda
