A Red, White, and Blue Ridge Getaway

We escaped to North Carolina’s High Country with friends for a Red, White & Blue Ridge Getaway over the 4th of July.

Enjoying the scenery and beautiful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Here’s a prescription to beat the summer heat and lower your blood pressure. . .

Have a seat and drink in the scenery. . .

Drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway. . .

Breathe in the fresh mountain air. . .

Celebrate the Red Wine and Blue at Grandfather Vineyard and Winery

Take a hike or walk along the many trails. . .

Admire the waves of fern fronds and rhododendron blooms. . .

Watch the clouds drift along the mountains. . .

Visit the charming town of Blowing Rock and walk along Main Street. . .

Sit on the porch and admire the view . . .

Watch the sunset.

What’s your favorite way to beat the summer heat?

Edit and Update: The mountain house with the large flag hanging vertically was across the street from us during our stay. A reader pointed out the flag was hung incorrectly. This would be an easy mistake to make, leaning over a second floor balcony to hang the flag.

“When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag’s own right, that is, to the observer’s left. When displayed in a window, the American flag should be displayed in the same way, with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street.”

You can find American flag hanging etiquette, here.

I reversed the image using PicMonkey so she hangs correctly, Long May She Wave!

What a perfect, relaxing getaway, Mary! I love the mountains, and I’ve always wanted to go to Blowing Rock, after reading the Mitford Series. I’m leaving the Texas heat tomorrow and heading to Colorado with my youngest son, DIL, and little Harper. I know we will enjoy the cool mountain air and being together.

We love living in these beautiful mountains and you have captured so much beauty. I used to have a small cottage at Lake Keowee with a dock and pontoon so I know how wonderful those mornings on the lake can be also. The lake is always busy on the 4th..a good time to enjoy the mountains. We are just a 10 minute drive to get on the Parkway. Have a blessed day. Dianne

How very pretty! Thanks for sharing the mountain scenery. No mountains near us, so to beat the heat, we go to the beach! Lake Huron’s refreshing cool waters cool you right down! :)

Mary, this looks to be a perfect solution to escape the heat. For me, I have to settle for a cold ice tea or iced coffee in the afternoons. Wish a trip to the mountains was in the plan! Thanks for sharing the beauty of NC mountains.

We just spent May through June in New Hampshire on the Great Bay and then drove to New York City and from there down to St. Augustine, Florida. I had no idea that the entire East coast is forest. There wasn’t a single state that we didn’t drive through forest as far as we could see. It’s amazing. The trees are slightly different in each state but still forest. We are done here at the end of July and we want to drive through all of Florida and the southern states again for the month of August before we turn north and head to Westerly, Rhode Island for September. Beautiful pictures as always. We are definitely going to add driving through the mountains of North Carolina to our itinerary.

I enjoyed seeing all your beautiful photos, Mary. We made a trip to NC a few days prior to your trip. It was so cool that I needed to wear a sweatshirt during the day! It was a wonderful respite from the heat here.

Oh Mary, I hope your camera did a reverse image or your cabin host hung your flag. It should be the reverse (as in stripes form a J (as in Union Jack) and not an L. Sorry to be picky but it just bugs me when our American Flag is not displayed properly. On another note….love the parkway and your blog/recipes

    • July 10, 2017 at 4:05 pm

Hi Debbie, The photo I took of the mountain house with the flag was across the street from us. I’m guessing when they were leaning over to hang it from the upper balcony they were picturing the stars and stripes when it hangs horizontally.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful photos of the Blue Ridge. It looks so cool and inviting especially during these horrible hot days. Reminds me of my home state of West Virginia.
