It’s hard to believe that’s almost September! Fall is my favorite season and I’ve been anxiously counting down the days until fall since late July and our 90+ degree temperatures. We have a lot more summer heat and humidity ahead of us here in North Carolina before fall finally arrives, but we’ve been hovering in the low 70’s since the weekend, the perfect fall teaser!
In anticipation of fall, I’m sharing some tips and ideas for creating a seasonal runner and centerpiece for your fall or holiday table. It’s a quick and easy method to dress the table, using items that you have or can gather from the grocery store or your backyard.
For my Fall Table with Woodland Friends, I wanted to create a runner/centerpiece for the table using natural materials and items I had on hand. I cut some green oak leaves, green Japanese privet berries and reddish-purple lorepetalum foliage snipped from the shrubs.
Endless summer hydrangeas had already faded and dried to a papery texture, adding a soft element and contrast to grapevine pumpkins and wooden acorns, both found at Hobby Lobby several years ago. I like to use real fall leaves whenever possible, but our leaves don’t turn until October so faux ones are filling in, providing soft and muted orange and gold hues. Last but not least, I added mercury glass votives for some sparkle and shine.
Let your materials guide you, placing them down the length of the table. I start with the larger elements first~ votives, pumpkins and hydrangeas, filling in with leaves, clippings from shrubs, and acorns. It helps to lay out your placemats or chargers on the table first, as a guide for you to build your runner/centerpiece.
I kept the privet berries and lorpetalum in water to prevent them from wilting until the last minute when assembling. If you’re using perishable flowers or greenery, you can use floral water picks, available at the craft store, concealing them under leaves or hidden among the other elements in your runner.
I used this same method last fall for a Forest Feast Gatherings Table. . .
Pomegranates, artichokes, apples, and pears join Baby Boo pumpkins, maple leaves, green oak leaves, lorepetalum and hydrangea blooms.
You can use this method to create an Easy 5-Minute Centerpiece for Thanksgiving.
Oak leaves join an assortment of mini pumpkins, scattered nuts and votives, for a leafy and organic runner for an easy and casual centerpiece for a fall or Thanksgiving table. We serve ourselves buffet style at Thanksgiving, with food on the kitchen island, so we don’t have to leave room on the table for platters of food. I have a collection of Proud Tom turkey plates that are gathered together at the table and it’s always fun to pick your favorite turkey!
If you’re in the market for turkey plates, I found some this week at Tuesday Morning. Queen’s by Churchill ‘Majestic Beauty’ turkey dinner plates are available for a great price at $4.99 each. Tuesday Morning also had Queen’s Pheasant, Mallard, and Stag patterns in stock.
You can use the same technique to deck the table with boughs of Leyland cypress for Plaid Tidings Christmas Table and DIY Evergreen Runner. Leyland cypress, is an ideal evergreen to Deck the Halls or table, since it won’t leave a sticky, sappy residue behind like cedar, fir, pine or most other live greenery. Pine cones, red apples, mercury glass votives and a few plaid ornaments are sprinkled down the length of the table, along with an assortment of nuts and sprigs of boxwood.
Another reason not to prune your boxwood between now and Christmas for your decorating and for Boxwood Wreath Napkin Rings!

Mary, I love your table centerpiece…it is definitely a wow factor! Thank you for sharing the DIY. Happy Wednesday! We are expecting heavy rain for the next three days from Harvey!
Pretty, pretty, pretty!! I love all the decorating for these seasons!! Thank you for all the wonderful ideas!! 🌻🌽🌼🍂🌻🍁❤️
Oh wow!!! Love your fall table scape, Christmas table decor, mad tea party decor and all the tips and ideas! Thank you and God bless! Remember to keep Texas in our prayers
I think I’ll try this on my kitchen table, Mary. I’m not in the fall decorating mood yet, but I appreciate you sharing your pretty, and easy ideas with us. It’ll give me something to look forward to trying. You’re the best!
Absolutely gorgeous! As usual!
I love these all. Do you ever have problems with moisture from your elements staining your table linens?
Hi Marty, No I make sure everything is dry. If you were using an heirloom tablecloth, you could always add a layer of wax paper for the elements to rest on to protect it first.
Mary, I love these kind of natural arrangements. Many times I use this kind of runner even using fresh flowers. Even though I really love a tall overflowing centerpiece, most of the time it has to be removed so guests can more easily visit. You just keep giving me great ideas. Thanks for tip about Tuesday Morning. I have the deer plates from this group but no turkey at all in my collection. Your blue turkey plate (from last year I believe) is about the most beautiful I have ever seen. Hot in Asheville too but two or three spectacular days in a row. God Bless Dianne
Mary you are so tasteful and inspiring! My only regret is that in Italy we can’t buy so nice pieces in abbordable (not sure about this word, my English is a little “rusty”) prices. I sould find the way to come back in the States… 🛩 I find your DYE really useful. Thanks

I love best the decorating/table centerpieces using first what we already have. This is a great tutorial showing the diversity of using natural materials added to what you might already have. Love this…and all your posts, Sandi
It’s all just over the top beautiful! Will have to give it a try. Mary I just loved the acorn napkin rings and contacted Mud Pie to see if they still carry them and they don’t ,boohoo, but they do have a lovely metal gravy boat that has acorns on it . I already have a darling fall gravy boat, but this is very tempting !
Hi Cyndi, The Mud Pie acorn napkin rings are sold individually and available online here.
I just love all your bountiful centerpieces Mary, bring on the pumpkins and gourds please Mr. Farmer!

The most beautiful tables and centerpieces I have ever seen! You have inspired me to try one for Christmas. Here in So Cal I don’t have acess to many natural branches or leaves. Would have to travel to local mountains which is 2 hours away.I could use fake but we’ll see what happens. I just know I’m making something like yours for Christmas. LOVE it!!!
I hope I didn’t miss this but I read and reread this article to find the name of your sweet fox and bunny salad plates. They are just adorable!! The centerpiece is spot on with all the natural elements. I do love when everything can be found right inside your yard! Can you please let us know where you got your cute fall plates or the pattern name. Thanks so much for sharing your designs.
Hi Monica, There was text link in red to the Fall Table with Woodland Friends you’re looking for with the fox, bunny and squirrel plates. All the sources are listed there, they came from Pier 1.
I love the centerpieces. You always make everything so beautiful.
Marilyn
The Turkey dishes are lovely. I have a platter from my grandmother. Thanks for sharing.

Mary, you are such a talented lady! And so gracious to share your talent with with all of us. Your instructions are very easy to understand also. I appreciate them and will be trying a table centerpiece that I hope will look somewhat like yours! :)
I think a natural runner of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and greenery is the best and you always create the most exquisite natural centerpieces. In having to keep things very simple this year, I shall follow your lead and gain inspiration from your natural decor on the table…Have a great day Mary!
These runners are outstandingly beautiful and unique! Thank you for sharing….you’re the best, Mary!
Beautiful!
Absolutely love this centerpiece and the fox plates are wonderful. You’ve given me some fall inspiration for my buffet table, thank you!
Perfectly swoon worthy! I love how you showed many examples for different tables using your same process for creating the bountiful center runner. Yes, this has been a nice teaser, but it makes for tougher weeks ahead (now that we remember how glorious cooler temps can be). I hope you have a blessed Labor Day weekend! :-)
Crazy but it has felt like fall in Rockport for almost a month with morning temps in the 50’s meaning I often have a fire to knock off the chill. I very much like all the natural elements in your centerpiece and can’t wait to stock up on pumpkins and gourds.
I love when you do these centerpieces. I made a Fall one last year and will do another this year, I am sure! Right now I have a long basket that I filled with limelight hydrangeas that I dried this year. I am loving the look. Hope you are having a great weekend!
Loved every centerpiece……….they are all gorgeous, and loved your cute salad plates every one of them.
Nicely done and very creative.
Thanks for the ideas.
Blessings,
Nellie
