It’s football season and I’m sharing a sweet and salty treat to snack on while you to cheer on your favorite NFL or college team! Truly addictive, this popcorn mix is a winning combination and snap to make to kick off your tailgate party or enjoy as a halftime treat. Best of all, you can customize it to your taste, using your team colors.
To up the sweet factor, I added some Brach’s Football Candy Corn to the mix, available exclusively at Walmart this fall.
This sweet and salty treat combines popcorn with candy coating or almond bark, along with pretzels, nuts and candy. More of a procedure than a recipe, you can vary it to your taste, changing the candy, sprinkles and quantities of ingredients.
You can find almond bark on the baking aisle near the chocolate. I like the CandiQuik brand for the convenience of the disposable microwaveable tray, but any brand of candy coating will work.
Pop your corn using your preferred method, removing any old maids or unpopped kernels and set aside. Melt the candy coating according to the package directions, microwaving for one minute, then stirring and repeating in 15 second increments until melted. Mix your melted candy coating with your popcorn in a large bowl, stirring until coated, then spread popcorn on wax paper or parchment lined baking sheet(s).
While the candy coating is still warm, sprinkle your team colors onto your popcorn. I used Carolina Panther colors and a combination of white, blue, and black jimmies. You can place your coated popcorn in the refrigerator to speed up the setting up process if desired.
Once your popcorn is set (about 10 – 15 minutes), break into pieces. Add your other ingredients to your coated popcorn~ nuts, pretzels, and candy of choice. For some Carolina Panther blue, I used Chocolate Drops from Party City. The chocolate drops (colored candy shell milk chocolate) are available in lots of colors to match to your favorite team.
This addictive mix is fun to customize, varying your ingredients in your mix for a seasonal treat or holiday gift~ for Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving, July 4th, Easter, or Valentine’s Day.
To avoid a holding penalty ;) use enough melted almond bark to provide a hard shell to coat the popcorn and prevent it from getting stale: 16 ounces of candy coating per 6 cups of popcorn. The popcorn mix will stay fresh up to a week in an airtight container.

Hi Amy, I think the ‘extra butter’ popcorn might become too soft for the candy coating. You could always experiment or just enjoy the candy, pretzels, and nuts mixed with the extra butter popcorn. ;)

We are total sweets and salty addicts in this house, and that looks so good! So far I’ve resisted candy corn, but that’s only because we have a 4# bag of M&M peanuts, and 3# tub of peanut brittle right now, and chex mix, and ice cream and……you catch my drift, I’m sure.
