oh, Mary, I’m going WAAAYYYY back here…when I was a child my favorite Halloween treat/candy was a Chunky chocolate square…raisins and nuts in a block of chocolate…I don’t think they make those anymore. You always have the BEST ideas for fun dining…and I freely admit that I have borrowed more than a few as bases for my own every day is a special day tablescapes…thank you for all the fun!

I have been a member of the Black Hat Society for a long time. Love Halloween and all the festivities. I guess my favorite candy was anything with caramel involved. Memories of going house to house to beg for treats then returning to a friend’s house to dump out our bags and do some trading followed by dunking for apples ,having cider and doughnuts then hearing scary stories are all wonderful. Happy Halloween.

As a child (my favorite TREAT on that special night) was the popcorn balls that one of our neighbors made and some homemade candy apples..never had store bought but that was a loooong time ago!! Popcorn balls are still my favorite!! I usually do my Halloween table beginning the 1st of October..therefore, any of those would be a welcome addition!! I’m a BLACK HAT MEMBER and a Facebook friend..I wish all lots of luck in this giveaway!! 🕸🕷🍁🍿⚰️🔮👻🎃💀👁

When I was a kid (a very long time ago), my favorite candy was the orange wax harmonicas and corn candy. Haven’t seen those in a while but I always buy a bag of corn candy for myself. I love all of your tables but always look forward to the Halloween one.

  27. Kathy Harris
    September 15, 2017 at 7:59 am

I treat myself around Halloween and buy those sacks of mixed mini candy bars. We particularly like the Pay Day, Baby Ruth and Reese’s mixture. I saw that Brach’s has a new “football shaped” candy corn this year. How fun to use them to decorate cupcakes for a tailgate
    I love Fall. 🍂🍁❤️

  28. September 15, 2017 at 7:59 am

Mary, I love the candy corn…the original and the chocolate varieties as well as the little pumpkins! I always have a small candy dish of them during the Fall. My daughter who has long since left home…told me the other day. “Mom, I do NOT like candy corn and all these years, I have been pretending I like them because you like them so much. :) I had to laugh…and not a cackle laugh although that most likely would have been appropriate. Your inspirations are amazing.

  29. Julie
    September 15, 2017 at 8:03 am

Mary, these are the best Halloween decorations I have ever seen! You put things together so well and are such an inspiration. I always buy a chocolate assortment of candy for our trick or treaters with the hope that there will be some peanut butter cups left over! I love them frozen! Thank you for all you do. I so enjoy your blog!

I was never into Halloween that much, but it is my daughter’s favorite holiday.
To me, it wouldn’t be fall or Halloween without the caramel apples!

  37. September 15, 2017 at 8:26 am

How fun Mary! I love decorating for Halloween and always enjoy your Halloween creations! I love to indulge in a tootsie roll! I spotted those white plates with the cute black border on them at Home Goods just yesterday, but I refrained myself since I would have to fly back to Florida with them! I always enjoy a visit here!

I think my favorite Halloween candy would be when I see the first package of Mellow Cream Pumpkins, candy corn, ears of corn, and walnuts in their shinny bag just waiting for me to grab them up at the local Fresh Market store and bring them home and put them in my leaf candy dish. Please keep on flying in with more decorating ideas.

Somehow Mom managed to find five sheets she could spare. She cut out two holes for eyes in the middle and then threw them over us for our costumes. Can’t you imagine 4 little boys and their sister tripping through the neighborhood hollering, “BOO!” to everyone? Our favorite treat was getting a can of Sundrop from our neighbor who owned the Sundrop company in Concord, NC.

Always love your posts coming in my email!!! I have to say that the best treat of all for Halloween was a grab bag that I would receive from some people full of Halloween goodies. I always loved this as a child as it added to the mystery of Halloween night wondering what was in those bags until I returned home. Now, I continue that tradition myself and give out grab bags full of treats tied with orange and black ribbon to all the little witches and goblins that grace my door each Halloween. Thank you for your wonderful blog and giveaways!

Halloween is my favorite holiday, like Christmas at our house! We have a smorgasbord of Halloween “treats, ” Including a crock of cider, spooky snack mix, mummy dogs, spaghetti brains, chocolate and caramel apples (hubby’s fave), Halloween brownies (son’s fave, though I’ll be trying your Oreo Brownies this year), and a cauldron of candy for the trick or theaters. I purchase any candy wrapped for Halloween and always add wax lips and fangs because they’re fun! My personal favorite is the candy corn autumn mix with pumpkins. I pick all the pumpkins out!!

Hi Mary! I love it when anything from you pops up on my email feed. So, I am a subscriber. I have been inspired by you from gardening and osprey views on the lake, info about monarch butterflies and recipes of course. Most inspirational of all are the tablescapes and the notes under each pic are so creative, especially the rhymes. My favorites by default because I am the dark chocolate lover in the house, are Special Dark.

  110. September 15, 2017 at 12:26 pm

Wow, what a great post! I am excited to attend my first meeting of the Black Hat Society! My favorite treat for Halloween, and year ’round is a Hershey bar with Almonds. I buy the giant ones, and nibble on them throughout the week. I kinda’ have a reputation for it. I went back to college late in life, and always kept one on my desk in AutoCAD class to share with the other gals, my classmate referred to the time in the afternoon when they needed a bite as Choc-O-Clock.

My current favorite Halloween treat is your blog. I am a subscriber and look forward to each new blog but Fall and Halloween are special. My favorite treat from years past was the special “adult punch” my neighbors offered the adults accompanying the trick or treaters. The couple put on a massive Halloween display and the husband supervised the kids while his wife, in costume, served punch to the adults on the porch. It was a nice surprise and added to the overall community spirit for the neighborhood. I especially remember the night the Texas Chain Saw Murderer came roaring out of the woods and I spilled my adult punch all over my leather jacket.

Wicked fun and sublime creativity! I could happily get lost in these photos. When I was young, I haunted the candy section of my dad’s Ben Franklun dime store, and I ate my weight in miniature pumpkin sweets. As an adult, I’m sorry to say that if a food doesn’t bite, it’s in my belly.🍭🍬

This year, I am hosting my first annual “Witches, Wine and Chocolate” party for about 36 girlfriends. I am requiring my guests to decorate a witch’s hat to wear to the party. I am going to serve a chocolate cheesecake, (or chocolate mousse in ice cream cones to resemble witch’s hats.) mini chocolate cupcakes, with black glitter picks from Etsy, wonderful orange cocktail napkins from World Market that say “Drink up Witches!” and an assortment of marshmallows, pretzels and fruit to dip in chocolate fondue, as well as wine ((However MY personal favorite treat is candy corn mixed with dry roasted peanuts!))

Hi, I really enjoy making your Halloween popcorn treat and sharing with my grown children and their children. I first saw that recipe last year and it was a big hit. I also make cut-out sugar cookies in the shape of bats, pumpkins and ghosts. You have the best decorating ideas and coordinating recipes, thanks for sharing.

You have one of my favorites pictured-pixie stix! I loved them as a kid (yes, they’ve been around forever) and my daughter always gave me hers, when she was a kid, cause she said they made her cough! The grapes ones are the best :)

Mary, you really are amazing. Everything you do is done so well, I can’t tell what you love doing best – is is baking/cooking? gardening? or tablescaping? All so tasteful…..which reminds me, I love candy corn, but mixed with peanuts, like a payday candy bar this time of year….:)

  202. September 18, 2017 at 11:58 am

Of course I follow your blog, but am now following on Facebook too! And, of course I pinned this post – the hardest part is deciding which board(S) to put it on – it can apply to several! Just really great stuff, Mary.

Everything looks so good! This year I get to take my granddaughter trick or treating. I can not wait. My favorite candy is Reese’s Peanut Butter cups, but around here, fall signals the return of my favorite seasonal treat, Ivins Spiced Wafers. I

For me, there are certain candies that only go with a particular holiday. For Halloween, it’s got to be candy corn! Not only is it a wonderful treat, I buy enough to put it in a glass vase and place a candle on top – then the house smells like candy corn too.

I absolutely love your page and blog! I’ve been following you for years!! Long before you were on Facebook and Twitter!
My favorite Halloween treats for our neighbors kiddos is to sit out on the front porch with a cauldron of hot chocolate (Witches Brew!) and Russel Stovers Candies. My favorite is the peanut butter pumpkins! They are hard to find but worth it! Walgreens usually cares some pretty cool seasonal candies! I decorate my house with the witches stripped stockings and shoes like the house fell on her with a sign that says, Watch out for falling Houses! And life size cowboy skeletons, with cowboy hats, guns and holsters, sitting on the front porch playing cards on top of a whiskey barrel. Empty cobwebbed Whiskey bottles and an owl 🦉 overlooking them. Skeleton is on top of the roof peering down at them.

Mallow creams in the harvest shapes are my favorite, specifically the black cats and bats. I eat all those first. they are like tootsie roll flavor without the taffy-ness of tootsie rolls.

Years ago, when trick-or-treating meant going house to house in costume and getting candy, Mom would send me out with my 2 older brothers. After a couple hours of scouring the neighborhood, we’d come home and compare our loot. Inevitably, my older brothers convinced me the candy bars and anything chocolate was meant for boys not girls. So after a few years of losing my ‘good’ candy, I learned to hide the good ‘stuff” before the ‘comparing’ began. So today, any candy bar or chocolate treat is a favorite! Now that we all have our own families, I send a Halloween gift box to my brothers and their families with treats and toys but only one piece of chocolate!

My favorite Halloween trick or treat candy is by far Mrs. Brown’s homemade Popcorn Balls. This was in the 50’s trick or treating. We lived in a wonderful old neighborhood with sidewalks and huge trees in every yard and it was fun skipping down the sidewalks in the cool evening air with leaves crunching under our feet. I always went dressed as a Gypsy. My costume compliments of Woolworth’s.
I have no idea how Mrs. Brown made her popcorn balls, but it was probably with the good popcorn you use to pop on the stove. It had a flavor like no other. She always wrapped them in waxed paper and tied with a ribbon. They were the best! I still have my cloth Halloween trick or treat bag (orange with goblins on it) and sometimes I think I can still smell the aroma of her long ago Halloween treats.
Of course the old fashioned candy like MaryJanes, Tootsie Rolls, Fireballs, Wax Lips, Red Devils, Brown Cows, Neco Wafers and Sugar Babies were a close second! Wish I could turn back the clock.

I absolutely love your blog! Especially the Halloween and Christmas ones! I must say Halloween is my favourite holiday. Sadly, I don’t get as many kids because I live on a very short street at the top of the culdesac and most of my neighbors don’t give out candy. But that doesn’t stop me from decorating! I love the Halloween shaped goodies this time of year, especially Reese.
