The witching hour is near. . .Halloween is less than two weeks away, time to polish your shoes, dust off your broom and buy a new hat!
Are you ready for some witch “craft”. . .how about a Floating Umbrella Witch?! I’ve seen these witches flying all over the web and on Pinterest. This fun DIY is easy and starts with a pair of witch legs and an umbrella.
I picked up an umbrella at Dollar Tree. Open the umbrella and break off the handle below the spring that keeps it open. This was easy to do with a dollar store umbrella, just bending the handle back and forth until it snapped off. If you’re using an umbrella you already have or one that’s more substantial, you might need a pair of pliers or snips to cut off the handle.
Fire up your broom and fly to craft store. You’ll need a pair of witch legs, I got mine at Hobby Lobby on clearance for $8.00.
I had black pipe cleaners and a roll of black mesh in my supplies left over from my Witch is In Wreath. I found some 6-inch wide glittery tulle in 25 yard rolls in orange and black to match the legs at Hobby Lobby. I used two rolls of black and one of orange.
To conceal the sticks in the witch legs, I used the black mesh, bunching it up and threading the stick with the mesh.
Next I wove the black mesh under the umbrella stretchers to give her “skirt” some volume.
Cut your tulle in lengths long enough to hang down to create a skirt and loop them or to tie onto the umbrella stretchers. You’ll want to play around with your tulle and cut it to your desired lengths, depending on the length of your witch legs.
Every good witch needs some bling, so I added some glittery spiders that I had and I picked up a couple of rolls of sparkly tulle with sequins that I found at Michaels for 70% off.
Once I had the upper part of the witch legs covered in mesh, I tied them off with black pipe cleaners, then tied them together. I had to use a little hot glue to keep the pipe cleaners in place and from slipping on the sticks of the legs.
I used a couple of black pipe cleaners twisted around the remaining part of the umbrella stem and used them to secure the witch legs to suspend them from the umbrella.
Here’s a view from underneath with her “bloomers” showing! Make your witch petticoat as full as you want, varying the lengths of your tulle, no need to be perfect.
To hang the umbrella witch, I slipped a pipe cleaner under the ‘button’ on the top of the umbrella, twisting it around to make a secure loop.
Hang your floating witch from the ceiling for a Halloween greeting, over a table for a witch’s tea party, or suspend her from a chandelier! Fly over HERE to see her at the table. . .
This is such a good idea 😂
This is awesome!! I have an old umbrella I could use and witches legs!! How did you think of this??? Love it!!!❤️🎃🕷🕸☂️
Love the tutorial, and she’s a hoot!
So fun and easy, I love it.
So very adorable!
Adorable as always, Mary. Pool noodles make good witch legs — easier than stuffing and go on sale the end of summer. We used pool noodles, child sized striped tights from Walmart and a child’s boots from the thrift store to make our witch who landed legs up in the shrubbery. Tomato stakes hold the legs upright. There is a broom also in the shrubs, a hat in a tree and a sign that says “If you can’t fly with the big girls, stay off the broom.” It was a big hit with the kids last year.
Your display sounds super cute Sara!
I love love this floating witching and thank you for sharing the diy

This is so clever…thanks for sharing!
This is so flippin’ *cute* LOVE this!
Mary, Yes, I am cackling with glee–can you hear me? This is the cutest idea I have seen this Halloween! Who knew that witches had all that prettiness tucked under their skirts? I would like to have some pretty bloomers like these for myself when I fly around. Floating along on my umbrella would be handy when my broom is in the shop for repairs! And thank you so much for my Halloween winnings! I love all the bits and have enjoyed some of the goodies already. Yum, the tea is delicious, especially in large doses in my special cup. Can’t wait to see your upcoming Halloween table! Linda
Thanks for sharing your glitzy witch, you have an incredible imagination.
Super creative and festive, Mary. I need to find a HL nearby. I found a witch legs wreath at a big box store, and the ‘witch’ parts were so disordered, it looks as if the poor gal fell into a Cuisinart. 🎃☠️🕷🕸 I can’t wait to see your tablescape!
I am so going to make this. What a sassy Witch with such cute bloomers! Thanks for the inspiration! Blessings!!!!

Looks nice
How fun is that?! You are clever. :)
Wow is amazing, super creative
I love all the darling witchy things. What I really love are all the bite size bags of candy. We don’t get any little munchkins tricking here but I prepare and then of course have to eat it all. I love KitKat bars and Reese.Yum
