Welcome November: Holiday Whiplash and Magazine Feature

Happy November 1st! I always look forward to November’s arrival. It’s the quiet and forgotten month, falling between the excitement of October with Halloween and mayhem of December and the beginning of the holiday season.

November is the month when I find myself with holiday whiplash. I’m still packing up my cauldron and broom from Halloween and starting to think about turkey, but have visions of sugar plums dancing in my head.

{insert *deep breath* here}

I like to take some time to enjoy pumpkin season beyond the jack-o’-lantern until after Thanksgiving, when it’s time to trade in the pumpkins for boughs of holly and jingle bells!

And I tell myself to slow down and enjoy November as Thanksgiving season, instead of as Thanksgiving day.

If you have visions of sugar plums dancing in your head, I have a treat for you and magazine full of Christmas inspiration to share!

Vintage Holiday Magazine is available at the newstands now through December 5th.

This magazine is vintage Christmas heaven for fans of vintage decor and Christmas decorating with Shiny Brites, Putz houses, aluminum or flocked Christmas trees.

For those who love vintage decor, the Christmas season not only allows us to treasure the past, but helps preserve history by rescuing and displaying vintage holiday items in our homes.

I recognized Pam at House of Hawthorne‘s vintage Christmas decor including her Gurley candles, collection of plaid thermoses and Skotch koolers, in this issue.

And there are peeks into other collectors’ homes filled with vintage Santas, stockings, tree finials, Putz houses and more.

I was honored to be included in a Holly Jolly Dining section, featuring my Plaid Tidings Christmas Table

and DIY fresh garland centerpiece with my collection of plaid and Santa plates.

I found a copy of Vintage Holiday Magazine at my local Harris Teeter grocery store, but look for it at Michaels, JoAnn’s, Barnes & Noble, or you can purchase it online from the publisher at Engaged Media.

Wishing you Happy November and Thanksgiving Season!

Congratulations on the feature, Mary. I loved that table. I also love your thoughts on this month of Thanksgiving. Your garden photo collage is beautiful – still clinging to the beauty of the pieces remaining in the garden.

Mary, you are so right about November, we need to the take time to slow down and be thankful. Most store have little regarding Thanksgiving, in comparison to Halloween. Love the final fall pictures. So proud of you for yet another feature in a magazine! Love that! I will go to our JoAnne’so store to get the magazine. I have shinny bright Christmas ornaments, some of the very ones you show and also the choir Christmas candles. Love vintage! Thanks!

Congrats Mary, I do love that beautiful table! I agree Thanksgiving is a season not just a day and is often overlooked crammed between Halloween and Christmas!

It has always been our tradition to honor Thanksgiving as a season rather than day. After a month that glorifies fear, darkness, death and decay, albeit in a fun way, gentle November is a welcome relief. We set it aside to specifically celebrate a whole month of remembrance and gratitude to God.

Here is something we do: We fill a bowl with the names of 30 of our heroes from history and/or family members living or dead written on construction paper leaves. All family members contribute a name or names. Each day a name is drawn from the leaf bowl. The one whose name it is recounts a story or reason that person is special. Then we include a prayer of thanksgiving for the life of that person when we say grace. It is one way to keep story telling and family history alive.

I have a couple of orange tub filled with Thanksgiving decorations that come out November 1. Out come our Byers Choice pilgrims and Native Americans, the turkeys, the acorn garland, etc. We too, keep out the pumpkins, the cabbage, the corn stalks, the mums…all things that speak of autumn and harvest. Fall is such a delight!

Congratulations, Mary!!! I think you should be featured in EVERY magazine. I get so much inspiration from you each day.

Congratulations on your magazine feature!! You should have a magazine yourself….you are so talented! I agree on Thanksgiving should be a season instead of a day of thanks.

Congrats Mary on the magazine piece. You could certainly have your own magazine! Your “plaid” table was and is so beautiful and a natural choice to include in Vintage Holiday. I’ll be looking for the magazine at my Harris Teeter. Vikki in VA

Mary, congratulations on the feature! You know my plaid loving heart is beating quickly. I’m off to find that magazine today. Thanks for a heads up! Like you, I want to savor the russet colors of autumn for the month of November. Christmas will be here soon enough. I noticed the plaid Wellies in the mosaic. I have leopard and Courtly Check, but I think I need to find a fun plaid to add to the mix. Thanks as always for all the inspiration you give with each of your stellar posts. I think your blog should be printed into a wonderful tabletop book. You could do a series!
Cherish these last days of Autumn, my friend!

Congrats Mary! You really should have a magazine featuring all the beautiful work you do! The plaid tidings table is to die for! I love, love everything about it! Where did you get the plaid ornaments? They look perfect with the decorated table. Would love to copy this for Christmas. It’s never to early to start with all that has to be done at Christmas. Shopping, wrapping, baking, decorating, etc… I like to get an early start or I’m overwhelmed come Christmas. Now I can start looking for items to use on my tablescape!

Thanks so much Debbie. I found the plaid ornaments at Hobby Lobby. :)

Thanks for the Magazine hint. I’ll be looking for it. I already see just in your pages you showed some things we inherited from “hubby’s” parents. Several of those angel candles, etc. Also, many ornaments older than we are – and that’s saying something! I drag it out just about everything for Christmas decorating that we’ve acquired ourselves & the things we inherited. It’s like we’re still sharing our Christmas with those who have gone on before us! This NC sun, however, bleached out some of the antique ornaments that I hung from a guest bedroom window!!! Wasn’t happy about that. But there are other windows that won’t get the heat of the sun that I’ll have to see how I can work that all in. We downsized a few years back, and sadly, we no longer have a formal dining room (sigh). We do have a large area next to the kitchen – so I decorate that table as if it’s a formal room – makes me happy! I also have large collection of Christmas lighted houses which I put together as if it’s a mountain town – it goes above the fireplace in what was supposed to be a place for the TV (not with flat screens these days). And some other places to put more houses. Hmm, think I need to down size my Christmas decorations!!!

Everything you do is magazine material! Congrats, I’ll enjoy seeing your table in print. I really get sentimental about vintage at Christmastime and haven’t yet seen this magazine. I also like to stretch the pumpkin season until after Thanksgiving and will join you in making its month falloff Thanksgiving.

Congratulations, Mary! We get this magazine at Publix, and I will look for it today. I sort of skipped indoor autumn decor, but I am excited about decking the halls for Christmas.
