Happy Friday and Mother’s Day Weekend!
I’ve taken some time to stop and smell the roses and peonies that are in bloom this week!
The peonies smell heavenly. . .
Peony blooms are so fleeting, especially when you factor in heavy rain showers and thunderstorms that pummel the petals.
Time to gather ye peonies while ye may and enjoy the bloom!
In addition to peonies, I gathered some vintage mason jars along with some blue and white transferware for a blooming table in the Potting Shed.
Blue and white floral salad plates were found at Pottery Barn last spring. The crackle glaze and transferware-inspired floral motif had a vintage look without the price tag.
They’re layered on Mikasa English Countryside plates and topped with favorite nesting bird dishes.
Pieces of blue and white transferware were collected over time. . .a little shabby and time-worn.
Platters with crazing and chips. . .tureens and sugar bowls with missing lids.
But imperfectly perfect to serve up flowers!
I cut some blooming blackberry bush to enjoy the little white flowers. Blackberries grow along the edge of the field by my shed and the distant rumble of a tractor told me they were moments away from their demise with the annual spring mow.
Handle with care, these delicate little flowers grow on thorny canes, more hazardous than the thorns on rose bushes!
Garden gloves hold napkins with a bouquet of mismatched vintage floral flatware.

What a beautifully happy, happy table for Mother’s Day. Interesting pattern combination going on…with the tiny striped napkins (placemats) and flowered ones, too. I need to go to Trader Joe’s for some peonies…they are not very successful in my yard…

The Peonies are so beautiful! Love all the pink flowers with the blue and white! I pointed out all the blackberry bushes in bloom along the side of the road just yesterday to my hubby! They were abundant on the road we were on. And yes, they are quite the sticky little things and would never thought about cutting the blossoms! Mary, you’re so clever! Blue was never my favorite color . But over the yrsI have shifted my thinking. There are so many shades in dishes, painted pieces ,and paint colors. You have made me a believer. Now I have beautiful blue and white pieces in my kitchen, yea Me😍
I love those nesting bird dishes! We have 5 acres and I have a lot of bird feeders and have birds featured in my decor in kitchen and living room. And I am going to borrow your clever idea of gardening gloves as napkin and utensil holder, so appropriate this time of year. I so enjoy your blog!
Morning. I agree with Jennifer that it would be sweet to come over to your potting shed and just sit/enjoy this view. Your Pottery Barn blue and white transferware plates look similar to ones I picked up at an estate sale last weekend. I told myself I did not need them but…This colors and the peonies are favorites. Wish I had started collecting blue and white sooner. Again, we appreciate these visual feast. Thank you. Sometimes I like to dress the table just for us, not exactly with dinner in mind. The garden gloves with multiple silverware designs are so very sweet! It is easy to see why you were a standout at visual display. Wow, wow, wow.

Going out to cut a bouquet of peonies right now. I have several bushes including one from my grandmother’s home place. I am on the Flower Guild in our church, we love using these beauties in the naive. The heady aroma permeates the entire sanctuary.

Thank you for such a pretty display of flowers , dishes and awesome vintage flower flatware! Those Peonies are beautiful, so delicate. My plant is only about 1 foot tall, but growing steadily each day. My tulip tree is in full bloom with it’s delicate pink and white tulip flowers and I prayed that last night’s rain would not have placed them all scattered on the ground this morning. We wait so long for spring to come, I hate it when Mr.Frost hits or the rain destroys. All is well with the Tulip tree and my Azalea bush, they are both in their glory. Love it! Happy Mother’s Day, give Sweet Gracie a hug for me. Any decisions on a new fur baby? My neice just rescued a 6 week old kitten from a friends barn and boy, is she darling and so much fun to watch. I have great peonies in my yard. Every year they are so covered with ants and I have to shake them out before I bring them in. they often curl to one side as well. Any suggestions???? Yours are beautiful and you don’t have ants crawling out of the center…..
Hi Gail, I read in Southern Living that peonies attract ants but they’re more of a blessing than a curse since ants play an important role in helping peonies bloom. Ants are attracted to the nectar found inside peony buds; when they climb inside the buds, they help them open. Plus, ants help keep other (damaging) insects away. Give them a good rinse to remove ants or cut them when they’re at the soft marshmallow, break bud stage.

My peonies are beautiful right now. I don’t cut them anymore because they are always full of ants and other creepy crawlies with pinchers. Don’t know what they are, but I’ve been surprised too many times at the sink. I’ll let Mother Nature enjoy her work and leave them in my garden.

Thank you Anne! Those creepy crawlies are earwigs and they’ve surprised me a time or two, lol! I learned to give the peonies a swish in a bucket outside :)

This may be my favorite ever! I love everything about this table! Here in west Texas we are dealing with hot wind and no rain! The wind has stripped my new rose bushes and bedding plants – no flowers to cut and enjoy. So I get to enjoy yours online! lol

Went out yesterday and cut a bouquet of peonies for my cut glass. vase and make sure I saved them from the “Peony Rain” as I call it. Always get those heavy storms that knock them down just when they are blooming. Absolutely love the smell and like to put them by my bedside for sweet dreams and to be the first thing I see when I wake up. Happy Mother’s Day to all . Have a beautiful day.

So very pretty Mary. I just love Peonies too and yours are beautiful especially with the blue and white transferware. I was able to cut a few last week between storms but unfortunately last night’s storm did the remainder in, thank you so much for sharing yours. The pollen in NE North Carolina has been abundant and had hoped it might have been washed away with last night’s storm but just heard my husband sneeze as he works on the boat. Mary, it’s Virginia again. I sent my. 93 year old Mother the Garden Apron which you featured as her Mother’s Day gift. I included pretty nitrill gloves, seeds and a gift certificate for plants just as you had shown. She called me yesterday to tell me how much she loves and appreciates the gift but did not want to get the pretty apron dirty so she plans to hang it up on display in her gardening and flower arranging room. 😊🌻🌸

So pretty, Mary. It seems my work in the garden this year is going to be about dividing, transplanting and nurturing new plants to replace those withering over the years. Of course, I’ll be trying to nurture a few new ones too. Your shed always makes me happy when you style it with blooms and pretty dishes. Gets me every time!
Obsessed with peonies, heading to Oregon to adelmans, a large grower this week, I adore those huge floppy fragrant heads! Brave girl with the blackberries, I think they are the bane of my garden existence, invasive devils yet you make them look sweet and demure! Happy mother’s day to you, I’m spending mine in the garden for a good ten hours 😬
So beautiful!!! Where do you find all of the gorgeous gardening gloves!! You always seem to find the perfect floral pattern in a glove to match your beautiful dishes. I live vicariously through your garden shed. It is going to take quite a while before I have any real garden to speak of – we need to do so many other things first to this place – in due time – but in the mean time – I drool over your spectacular florals!
