May Flowers Around the Potting Shed

Happy Monday, I hope you had a good weekend and Happy Mother’s Day! I’ve been enjoying the May flowers courtesy of all our April showers. Come along for a little walk with me to see what’s in bloom around the Potting Shed!

We’ve been in upper 80s and 90s the past week. It seems like we had two weeks of spring weather and have taken the leap into summer. I’m not prepared for 90+ degree temps this early! We’re in hardiness zone 7b, in our area of North Carolina. A USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is the standard by which gardeners and growers can determine which plants are most likely to thrive at a location. You can look up your hardiness zone by zipcode, here.

Salvia ‘May Night’, (common name Meadow Sage), has been blooming for several weeks. I love this easy to grow perennial that thrives in full sun!

The deep purple flower spikes attract bees and butterflies and is deer resistant. Deadheading and a little extra watering help ensure re-blooming.

To deadhead to promote more flowering, follow each spent stem from the top down to the first branching point and cut just above where new buds are forming.

Popcorn Drift Rose starts out yellow and fades to creamy white, reminiscent of buttery popcorn.

It’s comparable to the family of Knock Out Roses in disease resistance and low-maintenance, but smaller in size so ideal for small gardens or containers.

I’ve taken some time to stop and smell the peonies this week, they’re almost bloomed out . . .*sniff*.

‘Sarah Bernhardt’ is one of my favorites with pink double blooms that resemble old-fashioned roses.

As well as ‘Festiva Maxima’ with white double flowers with crimson flecks.

‘Mother of Pearl’ rose variety blooms just in time for Mother’s Day. This shrub rose was gifted to us by friends and planted a year and a half ago in memory of my mother-in-law, Betty.

‘Mother of Pearl’ is a Grandiflora rose that’s resistant to black spot and performs well in hot humid areas (us!) as well as cooler climates.

Pink Double Knock Out Roses have been especially floriferous this spring!

They’re fast-growing, long-blooming and drought and heat tolerant. While Rose Rosette Disease (RRD) can infect The Knock Out Roses, they themselves did not spread it. You can read about it here.

‘Cherokee’ Clematis has star-shaped pink blooms with a deeper pink center stripe. It’s a fast grower and blooms in May to June and again in August to September.

Mature height is 3 -4 feet so it’s the right size for smaller gardens or containers with a short trellis.

Japanese privet is considered invasive here in the South, popping up from seeds carried by birds that spread the plant. Our privet volunteered and grows in a hedge mixed with wax myrtles. You can cut the flowers to help eliminate potential reseeding.

I like cut some blooms to enjoy in a basket on the Potting Shed door or mixed with an arrangement of peonies.

Hope you’re enjoying some spring blooms where you are!

Thank you for your visit!

Your flower garden is gorgeous! Thanks for the flower arrangement ideas. I plan on using the hosta leaves in between two vases, very cool!

It’s so wonderful to see your beautiful gardens. Here in the frozen north…Zone 3..my peonies are a couple of green sprouts, salvia has little rosettes of green leaves, and the rose is still thinking about whether it’s safe to come out! We have had fairly warm days, but chilly nights…I’ll enjoy your blooms, and dream of warmer days! Thanks Carrole

You always start off my day with an incredible smile Mary! Your Spring garden around the sweet Potting shed is truly abundant with joy as you can only feel amazing joy that the flowers bring to your soul. I am enjoying my knock out roses too this year…they seem to be doing better this year than in the past….Off to the garden center today to seek out more blooms for my porches…maybe I will have some luck in finding some peonies…yours are exquisite! Have a great day Mary!

Mary, how your garden has grown, very lovely. The deep purple Salvia is stunning and the Popcorn roses are so cute. I have never tried to grow roses, but these are tempting me to try. The gifted rose plant, Mother of Pearl is so pretty! I love the star shaped, striped Cherokee Clemantis, mine is just starting to green-up and get buds, it’s a Jackmani Clemantis. Will look for this version as I really like that stripe. What a joy it must be to wander down your garden path from each lovely plant to the next! I so enjoy doing that. My pink Bleeding Heart is really starting to fill out. I love this plant, the hearts hang like little jeweled gifts. Thank you Mary, the garden tour was most enjoyable! ⚘

This post just made my day! I have the Japanese privet growing at the edge of our property and it smells wonderful, but I didn’t know what it was until I read your post! Everything is gorgeous as always! Happy Monday!

Good morning Mary- What beautiful flowers! Using the hostas leaves is so clever for a vase within a vase. I am going to look for the white and mother of pearl disease resistant roses as we battle blackspot for months as you mentioned as we are in TN. We have pink and red knockout roses but would like to add to the color palette. I don’t think there is a garden in the south that doesn’t have privet hedge thanks to the birds as you mentioned. I love it for the privacy factor & the blooms but it’s hard on some allergies, but that’s why there’s Zytec! LOL You’re right spring in the south this year spring was so short & now it’s summer! Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden, your floral knowledge and your floral arrangement ideas. Happy Monday! Clara 😃

Mary, your spring blooms are beautiful! The peonies, roses, salvia, clemetis, well, all are just a lovely treat to behold! I love the trellis that your clemetis is growing on. Do you happen to remember where it came from? I saw the beautiful Cherokee celemetis at Home Depot and wanted to buy one buy couldn’t decide how I could trellis it. One similar to your would work for where I would like to plant the clemetis. Just such a lovely garden! Thanks for letting me enjoy it with you!!! Happy Monday, Mary!

Thank you Karen! I found the trellis at HomeGoods several years ago. I always enjoy looking at their garden assortment in the spring 🌸🌺💐

Thanks for the tour, Mary! Everything is beautiful. I agree with you about the very short spring and hot humid weather already here (Lilburn GA). I do love gardening and am dismayed at my problems as I’m getting older. Have a nice deck and am pot gardening more and more.

Love your garden especially the Cherokee’ Clematis growing on the trellis. I have a small garden area around my home & this is a great idea for a pop of color that I can control by planting in a pot with a trellis. This would also look great on my small deck. The garden shed is just beautiful as well. I also think I may get potted miniature roses. Thank you for the ideas! Have a fabulous day.

  27. May 14, 2018 at 6:19 pm

Mary, your May garden is thriving with so much in bloom. It is gorgeous! I am so disappointed, my gardenias appear to be dying, not a single bud. Daylilies are really late. We need rain really bad. At least I can enjoy yours!

    • May 14, 2018 at 6:26 pm

Mother Nature has been schizophrenic this spring Pam! I lost a gardenia along with several perennials that just didn’t return including an impossible to kill buddleia, some coreopsis and artemisia. I hope you get the rain you need. ♥

Ahhh Peonies!! Wish they bloomed all summer!! The fragrance is heavenly and since they were my dad’s favorite, I imagine that fragrance wafting towards him in heaven!! Thanks for the wonderful post and ours won’t be blooming for another couple weeks..this year they should be right on time for Memorial Day!! 🇺🇸🌸🇺🇸🌸🇺🇸🌸

Absolutely gorgeous! I always love the shots with the bees in them Mary:@)

  33. May 15, 2018 at 7:29 am

What a beautiful post! Your plants are all doing so well. Love the pictures of the salvia. Your roses and peonies look amazing. My peonies are just out of the ground a few inches. They do grow fast though so I’ll be enjoying them before long. My clematis hasn’t started to grow just yet but I remember last year it was slow to get going. You’ll be all finished with your blooms long before mine begin!

  34. May 15, 2018 at 9:03 am

I needed this today! I just walked around our yard last night taking pictures too. Your gardens are FAR ahead of ours! The weather has been crazy. every day you guess how to dress, as we go from 90 to 50’s to 70’s etc. Thank you for sharing this beauty!

  35. May 15, 2018 at 9:17 pm

Gorgeous tour, feels so good to see the same things in my new garden after seven years of beach living sans a garden. I am drinking in color and scents, you can never have to much of a good thing! We have a matching bloom cycle, just glad I’m skipping the 90 degrees 😬

LOVE your potting shed and gorgeous gardens!! Our weather here in NEPA has been crazy with high temps. in the 80’s one day and now today we will be lucky if we see the 60’s!! I am no lover of heat and would be thrilled if it never went above 70-75!!
    Hugs,

So beautiful. I have a question about your red bench that sits outside your potting shed. Do you do anything to protect it from rotting? I’ve had a couple in my garden and they always rot from the bottom over time.

  40. May 25, 2018 at 11:19 am

There’s just so much to love in this post! I’m always a little green with envy about your potting shed. That collection of watering cans is to die for too! So glad you shared this at the garden party. The next one will be

I love your potting shed and the flowers around it are gorgeous! I have lots blooming in front of mine right now and thought that I needed to snap a pic. I love your collection of watering cans and how you’ve displayed them! Mind if I ask exactly what the pole is? I have quite a few, but have them scattered here and there. I have a gorgeous peach Peony blooming right now. The others are in bud and I can’t wait!! Thanks for sharing with the Garden party.
