I’m in the Potting Shed, enjoying the peonies ‘last hurrah’ along with roses that are blooming!
And as it’s the first Friday of the month, I’m joining my blogging friends for Floral Friday. You’ll find their links for more floral inspiration and flower therapy at the bottom of this post!
I cut the last peonies before our heavy rainfall from Alberto. Heavy rain + peonies = shattered flowers. . .there is nothing more distressing than peony confetti!
Our challenge and common theme for this edition of Floral Friday was to use a ‘box’ of some sort for flowers.
This set of three chippy drawers were a favorite antique mall find several years ago.
Their $7 price tag and small size made them a fun additional on the ladder steps of my Hatherly Patent Lattistep in the Potting Shed.
Earth Angel Floribunda Roses planted last year are in bloom. They (and I!) would be happier with a little less rain.
I lined the drawers with plastic bags before adding wet floral foam. The chippy nature of the drawers called for a casual ‘just picked’ garden bouquet, when it came to adding the flowers, rather than an ‘arrangement’.
I added a stamped marker to the drawer, among the roses. . .
“In the garden my soul is sunshine.”
My garden and soul is lacking sunshine as of late!
‘Earth Angel’ is a fragrant old-fashioned rose with blooms that vary from white to soft pink and that change as it reaches maturity.
It takes several bloom cycles to produce peony-shaped roses.
In addition to the drawers, peonies fill a Ball jar, served up on a tole painted tray.
I took my cue from a Garden Market sign. . .
The Garden Market, Open 9 to Noon, Flowers & Potted Plants, Garden Tools & Supplies
A vintage flower frog, birdhouses, blooming spade and watering can provide some tools and supplies on a bench next to the ladder.
‘Keep Calm and Garden On’ provides a reminder and ‘note to self’ as a stamped spoon marker. It joins a sprig of Lamb’s Ear in a small watering can.
Lamb’s Ear weathers the toughest of droughts and too much water can result in root rot -> Mother Nature: please take note!
I love the soft, silvery stalks with their pinkish-purple colored flowers that are always buzzing with bumblebees.
I’m saying farewell to ‘Festiva Maxima’ peony until next year …*sniff*

I always see the statement above the comment thread and always forget to mention that you make my day too! I love those chippy boxes that sit upon your ladder. Your ladder creations are always a favorite of mine. The other day while at Whole Foods, I saw these gorgeous roses and thought,now those I would love to plant in my future garden. The peonies, the roses … stunning Mary…and love your garden metaphor for life. Mary, it doesn’t get any better than roses and peonies for flower therapy! Your ladder with the chippy drawers is perfect for a gorgeous display. The potting shed with bird houses, watering cans, signs, and everything gardening is what dreams dreams are made of! My lamb’s ear did not return this year and I miss it’s fuzzy texture. You provided fabulous eye candy for my first cup of coffee before I start weeding. I love sharing Floral Friday with you, have a wonderful weekend!

Such beautiful flowers! What a lovely combination, love everything in this post! I don’t have any rose bushes and that beautiful “Earth Angel” is tempting to try, but I’m out of sunny spots with my yard in so much shade. So enjoy seeing the inside of the potting shed and the ladder all decked out with awesome vintage boxes as vases. The heat and humidity for the last week has been in the 90’s which is too much for me if I’m not at the beach or in a pool, but I did manage to plant Impatience and some Geraniums. Cooler weather in the high 70’s is coming and that makes me happy and able to do more yard work. The upside to the rain is not having to lug around the gardenhose! Lol Hopefully more sun is in your forecast Mary. You sure brighten our days. Happy Friday! ☀️

Love this Mary! I’m always sad when the peonies are finished blooming and invariably there are always heavy showers that pummel the flowers. Repurposing the drawers is such a fun idea for your ladder too!
Good morning Mary! What a delightful and unique floral display. You always provide us with a calming view of nature at its best. Love the floral boxes. Must go rescue a drawer (after the rain subsides) I was going to throw away from garage clean out Monday & use it to display flowers! Thank you for your inspiration! It’s pouring buckets of rain here currently (won’t last long hopefully) so the lovely flowers are so enjoyable to gaze upon while hearing the rain & thunder. Your white bird house is so cute; love the metal bee, key & fleur de lis topping it off. Bird houses make wonderful decorations! You have a lovely collection of watering cans as well. I live in Texas and we are having 107 tomorrow and are in drought mode. PLEASE send rain!!!! MY peonies were like that 6 weeks ago. I love the term peony confetti.

Mary your flowers in the chippy drawers is a show stopper! Also love your quote. This is first year that my peonies bloomed..transplanted from Mother’s garden. The rain just destroyed them. I brought one inside because of its fragrance. There are so many blossoms on the ground. You girls have really taken Floral Friday to a new dimension.

Gorgeous, the last peonies I bought in Oregon finished blooming this week, how unbearable we must wait another year! I can’t wait to have my own garden play house again, the endless fun you have!
Mary, I lose myself in your blogs! Your photography is spectacular! I read every word you write and feel like you are sharing with me one-on-one! Oh no, peony confetti!! That must have broken your heart Mary, seeing your flowers melting away…but the blooms you saved are simply elegant, the peony roses are gorgeous!
