Celebrate National Flag Week + Stars and Stripes Salute

It’s National Flag Week, with Flag Day on June 14th, commemorating the adoption of the U.S. flag and paying tribute to the banner that waves above us all. Americans are encouraged to observe Flag Day and National Flag Week by displaying the flag, so I’m waving the flag from the archives!

Old Glory’s official history dates back to June 14, 1777, when the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution establishing America’s banner.

The U.S. flag has gone through an evolution of 26 changes before it became the iconic symbol that it is today, proudly flying with 13 stripes and 50 stars, to represent the original 13 colonies and all 50 states.

From the Presidential Proclamation:

More than two centuries ago, on June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress formally adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of our new Republic.  Through the many triumphs and trials of our Nation, our flag has reflected our heritage of liberty and embodied the American virtues of bravery, justice, and loyalty.  Each year, we celebrate Flag Day and National Flag Week to honor our timeless national emblem.

Our flag symbolizes our solemn pride and eternal gratitude to our service members, who willingly raise their hand in front of our Nation’s colors and take an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.  Our flag also serves as a final acknowledgement of our country’s gratitude to the families of those soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coastguardsmen who have given their last full measure of devotion to our country.

The American flag invokes pride in our citizens and hope in those who come to our shores in search of a brighter tomorrow.  In recognition of the ways it has embodied our ideals and sustained our Nation, let us pay tribute to the Star Spangled Banner and continue striving to create a more perfect and indivisible Union — with liberty and justice for all.

I so enjoyed reading the historical facts you shared Mary, and seeing your incredible red, white and blue round-up! I was looking thru my stash earlier this am, wondering if I needed a shopping trip 😄 I really want to do a flag tree and your post and Shirley’s tree have given me a push! 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸

Mary, what a wonderful tribute to our flag! 🇺🇸Thank you for sharing all the beautiful pictures and interesting flag facts. We all anxiously await your patriotic tree! Gracie is just a little doll! She makes my heart smile❣️ Your Pier 1 flag plates initiated a quest for patriotic plates (like I NEED more dishes) LOL! Found some vintage Currier & Ives Tall Ships plates last week in an antique store that screamed “you need me” & I answered “yes, yes I do”! LOL They will be used this week in honor of flag day (as they have our flag on them) along with more patriotic flag decorations instead of waiting until July 4th. I may even get brave & venture into the hot attic to search for small heart shaped flag ornaments to display as well (an inspiration from your patriotic tree idea). Thank you for reminding us of this important day! We are all grateful to you for inspiring us, sharing your knowledge and reminding us to be thankful for those who have sacrificed for us so we can enjoy the great freedom we are blessed with. Have a wonderful day! Clara 🇺🇸 🐩 🇺🇸 ❤️ 🇺🇸😄 🇺🇸

Great post Mary! As soon as our spring weather arrives that’s the first yard task my husband does — hoists our beautiful flag which also is lit at night. He is a former military man serving in the National Guard during high school, the Air Force (4 years) and then the Army (3 years). Once she is unfurled and flying high, he always salutes her and it brings tears to my eyes. We are a blessed nation and are so thankful for the sacrifices of so many! Long may she wave! ♥️🇺🇸

    • June 11, 2018 at 6:15 pm

Thanks Cyndi, I didn’t know you served as a military wife…you deserve a stars & stripes salute too❣️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Oh gosh Mary, that is sweet of you, but I married “my hero” after his time of service, but thank you anyway. I do enjoy looking at his photos while he served and I display from Memorial Day to July 4th, his service picture, dog tags, and my father’s and brothers service pictures on an old Victrolia phonograph which is draped in a patriotic cloth. I like to honor them for their service. 😊🇺🇸♥️

Mary, thanks for a great post to the great symbol of our great country….how’s that for a patriotic salute. Here, we fly the flag every day except in bad weather and then I have two small flags in a jar in the entry way. I can’t think of a better way to support our military, past and present, as they serve our country and us. And as for hearing plates talk, I am sometimes afraid that my husband might ask me to leave if I bring in another plate. So far, so good, so I guess after 43 years, he is used to me “hearing” a plate call my name.
Give Gracie a pet from me and a couple of “meows” from our cats Schatze and Gaelen (they were fostered with dogs and still love any dog who comes to visit).
