Fall Planting for Summer Blooms: Daylilies + Giveaway

If you’re looking for a perennial that is low-maintenance, blooms repeatedly for years with little attention, tolerates the heat and drought and a wide variety of soil conditions, look no further than the daylily!

Daylilies are known for their hardiness and their big, colorful blooms. The daylily’s botanical name, Hemerocallis, means “beauty for a day” as each bloom only remains open for a single day.  Depending on the variety, the bloom season can last 30 to 40 days or longer. Blooming starts in late spring and can continue into early fall.

For best results, plant daylilies where they’ll get six hours or more of direct sunlight each day. Daylilies will also grow in partial shade, but will produce fewer flowers. Daylilies are easy to transplant, quick to multiply and relatively free from pests. They can be enjoyed as a pop of color in a garden bed among other perennials or massed together and planted in drifts.

Flowers appear on stalks called ‘scapes’, with multiple flowers blooming on a single scape. Each daylily plant has numerous scapes and can produce hundreds of flowers in a season. To keep the plants looking their best, snap off the spent flowers, taking care not to disturb nearby buds.

Daylilies will grow for many years without any attention, but the plants will produce more flowers if they are divided about every 5 years. Divide daylilies after the plants have finished blooming in late summer or early fall. Dig up the entire plant and cut or pull the clump apart. You can keep the divisions larger or you can divide the plant into individual fans. The fans can then be planted close together to fill in areas of your garden. Before replanting, trim the foliage back to a height of about 6 inches and cover with 1 to 2 inches of mulch.

Fall is a great time to add perennials that bloom in the spring or summer as it gives them time to develop a strong root system before the blooming season. Another benefit to fall planting is that you can usually save money at the end of the season from nurseries clearing out their stock. In celebration of the daylily, I’m sharing my favorite online source, Smokey’s Gardens.

Located in Coldwater, Michigan, Smokey’s Gardens is one of the largest daylily growers in the United States, with over three thousand varieties of daylilies and over five million plants, including thousands of seedlings and daylily seed production.

I’ve purchased several daylilies from Smokey’s Gardens. Among my favorite is ‘Lake Norman Sunset’ Daylily.

You’d think it would have been available locally but I could only find it online in Michigan :)  LKN Sunset is currently out of stock but you can find an amazing selection of individual daylilies or collections at Smokey’s Gardens.

The Rebloomer Collections are among my favorites as they have more than one bloom cycle for extended bloom time in your garden.

There is also a Fragrant Rebloomer Collection.

(Collection items may change at any time due to inventory levels.)

I’m sharing some daylily love and giving away a Rebloomer Collection to two winners!

My friend Jenna at The Painted Apron recently painted a beautiful watercolor version of my daylilies! Jenna is always wielding her whisk or her paintbrush to whip up something delicious in her kitchen or create something beautiful on canvas. You see her creative step-by-step process of her daylily watercolor, but I guarantee they are much easier to grow than they are to paint. ;)

We’ve stocked up on water and keeping our eye on Hurricane Florence as she heads toward the Carolinas. We were in Charlotte in 1989 when Hugo came ashore in Charleston. No one thought Hugo would come that far inland but. . .surprise! We were without power for a week from downed power lines from trees. If you’re in the path of Florence, I hope you stay safe. ♥

Mary, entry x3 – complete! Thanks for the chance to add to my garden. I will not be picky about choice should I win. Praying we are ALL safe from this storm. We are 5 hours – at least – inland, and are currently in the projected path of heavy rains and flooding. Incredible. The most unbelievable part is my sister in Beaufort SC is planning to stay put. I guess they’ll drag her out, one way or another. :'(

Visited Beaufort, SC (from the Pacific Northwest) just for fun ,and for the first time last fall. It was a wonderful visit. Hoping the area weathers anything storm-related and your sister stays safe.

Love your posts always, and I do love daylilies. I have mostly Stella D’Oro – very common here in Kansas, but I am loving the red and pink varieties. I like Chorus Line and Buffy’s Doll! Hope all are safe from the storm!

Dayliles are one of my favorite flowers. We actually used to have a small business in Virginia where we raised and sold Dayliles. Even did some cross breeding and developing our own cultivars. Brought quite a few varieties when we moved to Greensboro but the deer have discovered them too…
Stay safe in the storm. We were scheduled to go to Topsail next week but I feel that will be postponed. .

I’m going to check out the varieties you’ve shared in these shipments and see if they will do well in HOT Texas. My husband and I love daylilies! The foliage is pretty when the flowers aren’t blooming and the flowers are so much bang for the buck. :)

Daylilies have always been a favorite of mine. I especially love anything in the pink- rose color family. I can see why the Lake Norman is a favorite besides its name, it’s a beautiful color. Stay safe this week my friend.

I have a daylily garden…my “current” favorite is Buttered Popcorn…but that is subject to change. Thanks for the chance!! Happy subscriber here…

  31. September 11, 2018 at 8:33 am

I’m a confessed Daylily-a-holic!! I have two large beds full. Many I don’t know the names of or don’t remember, but one of my favorites is Black Knight. It’s a very dark purple with large blooms. How on earth did I not know about Smokey’s living in Michigan myself??? Will have to make a trip down there. I also pinned your decorated hay bale. I love that picture. Seeing hay bales scattered across an open field is so beautiful any time of the year. Stay safe dear friend!

  35. September 11, 2018 at 8:46 am

What beautiful collections of daylilies that you’ve shared, May. I grew yellow ones at one time, but then eventually they got too much shade. My favorites are the pink colored ones. Thank you for your awesome giveaways that you offer. Jenna is so talented!
Stay safe at Lake Norman…praying that the hurricane path strays from you.

    September 11, 2018 at 8:47 am

How timely! We just cleared 2 different beds of barberry bushes in one and evergreens in the other. Since both beds are rather narrow daylilies would be perfect. I love the peachy color of Cheerful Days or Chorus Line. We have a large daylily farm nearby. Will check for LKN Sunset when we visit. Need to get beyond the Stella’s that are the mainstay around here. Stay safe.
    Thanks, Carolyn K.

I love daylilies! What a treat to see them featured on your blog this morning. It’s difficult to pick just one, but a real favorite is EZEKIEL (Talbott ’92) shown on Smokey’s Garden list. It is a knock-out eye-catcher and one that just draws you in. I am enjoying having 4 seasons again so your photos give me inspiration. I pinned “Flowers in a Pumpkin Tureen’ to my Decorating Ideas file. We’re gearing up for the possibilities of the hurricane. You stay safe, too.

I love the evergreen varieties and the red and yellow or purple and yellow contrasting daylilies. Mostly I love that they are “Triciaproof.” Have not killed a daylily yet!

  43. September 11, 2018 at 9:07 am

Oh Mary, here I am worried sick about you and your NC neighbors and you are lightening the mood with your beautiful daylilies! I love that the botanical name translates to “beauty for a day!” The sad thing is I have to paint daylilies because I can’t grow them, despite your assurances about how easy they are, mine only lived for 1 season! Thank you so much for the kind words and shout out~ hunker down, little ole tropical storm Gordon was strong enough to blow my begonias out of their pots last week! Oh, and please give my entry to a much more deserving gardener like Rita. Such a lovely giveaway, I had no idea there were so many types!

I have Yellow, Stella D’Oro and even plant my Easter Lillies, but my new love is the Lake Norman Sunset, as mentioned to you in a prior post. Can’t believe the source is located here in MI and only 2 and a half hours away from me, lol! I have pinned the beautiful sunset picture and also the lovely fall look to the pontoon boat! I could live on that boat so easily! Will say a prayer for your safety Mary and for all those in the path of Flo. Thank you. 🌅

I so love daylilies! I remember all the beautiful ones my grandmother grew at her home in Virginia. I’ve been blessed to have several friends who shared their daylilies with me. One was an expert who judged daylily shows and had many gorgeous varieties. I have a hard time picking just one but she gave me one that is a deep red with a yellow center that might be my favorite. But actually, whichever one is blooming at the time, is my favorite!

  51. September 11, 2018 at 9:39 am

I do love day-lilies. … all the different sizes, colors, types. I buy mine from Oakes Day Lily. Great customer service and wonderful collection to pick from. I’ll have to look into Smokey’s. Stay safe in Florence and buckle up!

It’s apropos your giveaways are daylilies in view of what you may be facing (Florence.) Just like daylilies, you and your family are firmly planted and will handle whatever Mother Nature throws your way. I know you won’t let this potential setback stop your amazing spirit; you continually create a truly magical garden and so freely share it with all of us…we thank you! And, if Florence does wreak havoc in your yard, I bet there are probably a zillion readers who would love to come to your yard and help you restore it! After you sharing your beautiful garden and world with us all these years, it’s about time we did something nice to thank you!

About 5 years ago, I divided my LKN Sunset with my mom. Then we moved from the lake, and I left my daylilies behind. I am planning on dividing the daylily in my mom’s garden this fall, so I will have a LKN Sunset once again in my garden in SC. It is my favorite. Your posts make me remember fondly our years at LKN.

  62. Linda
    September 11, 2018 at 10:30 am

On3 of our past houses had a huge bed of day lilies, I do t know what varieties – various shades of yellow to orange, some with almost a rust color inside. I love all the beautiful colors in your pictures, any would work for me, scented or unscented.

  63. September 11, 2018 at 10:36 am

Beautiful daylilies! I love them. I knew a lady here that was a collector and very involved in the Daylily Society. She had about 700 varieties in her yard. Each year, she would sell divisions to benefit an animal shelter. She was a very sweet lady. I have several plants from her divisions in my yard. Unfortunately I lost the tags many years ago before I realized that keeping names was important. I love the big pinkish/peachy ones. But I really like that barely yellow one you have in your pictures and I’m a huge fan of “green” flowers. So I looked at the Smokey’s website (thank you for the recommendation) and found several I’d love to have, including Cream Desire which is white/chartreuse.

I am a subscriber and have enjoyed your tips for a long time. Daylillies are so pretty and love the “pop”when you pull off the spent ones. I have one large one that is rust and yellow. I’ve long since forgotten its name. We are in SC and have place on the beach. Keeping fingers crossed.

Hi Mary, Oh, my, these day lilies are so beautiful. Here in central California, Stella was always a big favorite for land scaping and can be seen all over town. I had no idea there were so many different colors of day lilies now! I absolutely love the pink shades, especially pink and yellow combinations. The one that you have photographed at you home is stunning! I am so inspired to add in some daylillies now to my garden, who knew there was so many options for spectacular color and fragrance. Thanks for the contest. Stay safe.

  68. September 11, 2018 at 11:26 am

Mary, this is a wonderful information filled post, not to mention all the beauty of the daylillies. My daylilies are heriloom ones, but not fancy. Just the generic orange ones, and also a yellow varety. They have suffered from our summer, but are beginning to revive. I appreciate the source for ordering. As I was the lucky recipient of the garden apron, tools, and other goodies, I’ll refrain from tossing my garden hat into the ring. Certainly is a wonderful gift! You are always the most generous friend! Stay safe. Hope the rains don’t flood your area.

Thank you for your blog! Definitely enjoy reading your posts. At the moment my favorite is one lonely Stella D’oro! When we bought this 14 year old house last summer, it was the one and only plant of any kind in the yard. Hi Mary! I’m a happy subscriber for YEARS now! My favorite is the one you see when you open their site. I looked through the gallery and can’t tell for sure which one it is, but I’m guessing it’s Datin Chan Oi Yin. Happy fall!

Good Morning Mary! First and foremost, be safe from the storm. Next, I am in awe of your talent; and finally, my favorite is Blueberry Cream Daylily. It has creamy yellow with a blueberry-purple center and purple edges. I’m also very fond of all the peach and mauve colored daylillies.

I am privileged to live 5 miles from North Dakota State University – home of the NDSU Historic Daylily Garden. This is an official display garden of the American Hemerocallis Society, and features more than 1,500 daylily cultivars. It is the largest public daylily collection in the nation.
My favorites are Copper Royale and Chorus Line. And I am a subscriber.
Thank you for another great give-away!

Wow! Gorgeous! Praying that Florence will lessen plus not have so much water.
In 1989 my husnand flew into Hugo as he flew for NOAA. He almost lost the plane and all souls aboard. Praise the Lord they made it back to Barbados even though there was damage to the plane. I moved from NC to Co in November and the wind damage from Hugo was evident in the NC mountain as I drove as all the trees in its path were laying down. Will never forget Hugo!

Mary, I have followed your blog for several years and have shared it with many friends. My husband loves daylillies and has several planted in our yard. My fave that we have is an Asian Lilly. It is a very deep maroon-ish red. But sadly it only blooms once a year. I would love to see it all summer!

  96. September 11, 2018 at 9:50 pm

I have only the old fashioned orange ones. They faithfully return each year in the spring and do well until the hot Texas sun returns in the summer. I would love to try Buffy’s Doll.

Please be safe. I love the pinks and purples and will be planting some out here in California. I had not heard of the fragrant rebloomers – THANK U! Are you able to use day lilies in bouquets? I’ve been told the flowers do not last. I’m going to experiment anyway as I have a perfect spot to try.

Hi Mary, count me in as a daylily fanatic. I can’t get enough of them. Having experienced Hugo in Charlotte, which was supposed to be a nonevent, I am very nervous for friends and family in both North and South Carolina. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Mary, I just love daylillies and plan to add more to my garden this fall. My husband has started on a new brick walkway through the garden for me. My plan is to plant abundant daylillies on both sides in the sunniest areas. I am partial to Stella de Oro and the old fashion orange daylilllies which grow along the roadsides here. The flags hanging on the lampposts in our small little business district have daylillies on them. The town is even considering adopting the daylily as the Town flower. I would love to be a winner of your giveaway. We have been busy the last few days preparing for Florence as we live 60 miles inland from the Outer Banks and on a big old river. Thankfully the recent projections are showing our area out of the worst of it but in for lots of rain and wind. Take care all and stay safe.

Oh Mary, I have to pick just one favorite daylily, that’s nearly impossible for a daylily lover like myself. I’ll just say South Seas since I have to pick one though. I have several daylilies in my gardens from Smokey’s, so I can second the suggestion to purchase from them. Prayers for safety from the storm.

I have gotten back into gardening since he passed and would love some daylilies for my yard. Thank you for your wonderful posts and beautiful photos! Praying you are safe during the storm.

I LOVE Daylilies…and so do the deer in my neighborhood….however, we plan to have a fence in the new house so I just may be able to finally grow and enjoy them…I so love it when I see the massive amounts of dailies along the highways of NC…a most spectacular vision of beauty…a most generous giveaway and love, love the gorgeous images of the daylilies! Have a great week and stay safe and dry!

I love all your posts but am always fond of your garden pictures. We just recently moved to a new home and daylilies are planted in the flower beds around the pool. I was so pleased to see them start blooming just recently. The weather has been soooooo warm I was afraid they wouldn’t survive but they are blooming away. My favorite daylily is the pink chorus line.

  106. September 13, 2018 at 9:28 am

We love the burgundy short lilies, not sure of the name. They match the colors of our exterior doors. But, I must have 7-8 varieties here. Stay safe….through the hurricane. I was thinking of you—when I saw the map, Sandi.

I love daylillies, had some growing in the garden when I moved to this house. Unfortunately several years ago, I had an infestation of tiny red bugs that ate the plants and all plants had to be pulled. I’ve wanted to plant day lillies but on occasion I see one of those bugs and fear the plants would be decimated again.
