If you’re looking for a perennial that is low-maintenance, blooms repeatedly for years with little attention, tolerates the heat and drought and a wide variety of soil conditions, look no further than the daylily!
Daylilies are known for their hardiness and their big, colorful blooms. The daylily’s botanical name, Hemerocallis, means “beauty for a day” as each bloom only remains open for a single day. Depending on the variety, the bloom season can last 30 to 40 days or longer. Blooming starts in late spring and can continue into early fall.
For best results, plant daylilies where they’ll get six hours or more of direct sunlight each day. Daylilies will also grow in partial shade, but will produce fewer flowers. Daylilies are easy to transplant, quick to multiply and relatively free from pests. They can be enjoyed as a pop of color in a garden bed among other perennials or massed together and planted in drifts.
Flowers appear on stalks called ‘scapes’, with multiple flowers blooming on a single scape. Each daylily plant has numerous scapes and can produce hundreds of flowers in a season. To keep the plants looking their best, snap off the spent flowers, taking care not to disturb nearby buds.
Daylilies will grow for many years without any attention, but the plants will produce more flowers if they are divided about every 5 years. Divide daylilies after the plants have finished blooming in late summer or early fall. Dig up the entire plant and cut or pull the clump apart. You can keep the divisions larger or you can divide the plant into individual fans. The fans can then be planted close together to fill in areas of your garden. Before replanting, trim the foliage back to a height of about 6 inches and cover with 1 to 2 inches of mulch.
Fall is a great time to add perennials that bloom in the spring or summer as it gives them time to develop a strong root system before the blooming season. Another benefit to fall planting is that you can usually save money at the end of the season from nurseries clearing out their stock. In celebration of the daylily, I’m sharing my favorite online source, Smokey’s Gardens.

I’ve purchased several daylilies from Smokey’s Gardens. Among my favorite is ‘Lake Norman Sunset’ Daylily.

Dayliles are one of my favorite flowers. We actually used to have a small business in Virginia where we raised and sold Dayliles. Even did some cross breeding and developing our own cultivars. Brought quite a few varieties when we moved to Greensboro but the deer have discovered them too…

I’m a confessed Daylily-a-holic!! I have two large beds full. Many I don’t know the names of or don’t remember, but one of my favorites is Black Knight. It’s a very dark purple with large blooms. How on earth did I not know about Smokey’s living in Michigan myself??? Will have to make a trip down there. I also pinned your decorated hay bale. I love that picture. How timely! We just cleared 2 different beds of barberry bushes in one and evergreens in the other. Since both beds are rather narrow daylilies would be perfect. I love the peachy color of Cheerful Days or Chorus Line. We have a large daylily farm nearby. Will check for LKN Sunset when we visit. Need to get beyond the Stella’s that are the mainstay around here. Stay safe.

I love that the botanical name translates to “beauty for a day!” The sad thing is I have to paint daylilies because I can’t grow them, despite your assurances about how easy they are, mine only lived for 1 season! I have Yellow, Stella D’Oro and even plant my Easter Lillies, but my new love is the Lake Norman Sunset, as mentioned to you in a prior post. I so love daylilies! I remember all the beautiful ones my grandmother grew at her home in Virginia. I’ve been blessed to have several friends who shared their daylilies with me. One was an expert who judged daylily shows and had many gorgeous varieties. I have a hard time picking just one but she gave me one that is a deep red with a yellow center that might be my favorite. But actually, whichever one is blooming at the time, is my favorite!

About 5 years ago, I divided my LKN Sunset with my mom. Then we moved from the lake, and I left my daylilies behind. I am planning on dividing the daylily in my mom’s garden this fall, so I will have a LKN Sunset once again in my garden in SC. It is my favorite. Your posts make me remember fondly our years at LKN.
On3 of our past houses had a huge bed of day lilies, I do t know what varieties – various shades of yellow to orange, some with almost a rust color inside. I love all the beautiful colors in your pictures, any would work for me, scented or unscented.
Beautiful daylilies! I love them. I knew a lady here that was a collector and very involved in the Daylily Society. She had about 700 varieties in her yard. Each year, she would sell divisions to benefit an animal shelter. She was a very sweet lady. I have several plants from her divisions in my yard. Unfortunately I lost the tags many years ago before I realized that keeping names was important. I love the big pinkish/peachy ones. But I really like that barely yellow one you have in your pictures and I’m a huge fan of “green” flowers. So I looked at the Smokey’s website (thank you for the recommendation) and found several I’d love to have, including Cream Desire which is white/chartreuse.
I am a subscriber and have enjoyed your tips for a long time. Daylillies are so pretty and love the “pop”when you pull off the spent ones. I have one large one that is rust and yellow. I’ve long since forgotten its name. We are in SC and have place on the beach. Keeping fingers crossed.

Hi Mary, Oh, my, these day lilies are so beautiful. Here in central California, Stella was always a big favorite for land scaping and can be seen all over town. I had no idea there were so many different colors of day lilies now! I absolutely love the pink shades, especially pink and yellow combinations. Mary, this is a wonderful information filled post, not to mention all the beauty of the daylillies. My daylilies are heriloom ones, but not fancy. Just the generic orange ones, and also a yellow varety. They have suffered from our summer, but are beginning to revive. I appreciate the source for ordering. As I was the lucky recipient of the garden apron, tools, and other goodies, I’ll refrain from tossing my garden hat into the ring. Certainly is a wonderful gift! I am privileged to live 5 miles from North Dakota State University – home of the NDSU Historic Daylily Garden. This is an official display garden of the American Hemerocallis Society, and features more than 1,500 daylily cultivars. It is the largest public daylily collection in the nation.

In 1989 my husnand flew into Hugo as he flew for NOAA. He almost lost the plane and all souls aboard. Praise the Lord they made it back to Barbados even though there was damage to the plane. I moved from NC to Co in November and the wind damage from Hugo was evident in the NC mountain as I drove as all the trees in its path were laying down. Will never forget Hugo!

Mary, I have followed your blog for several years and have shared it with many friends. My husband loves daylillies and has several planted in our yard. My fave that we have is an Asian Lilly. It is a very deep maroon-ish red. But sadly it only blooms once a year. I would love to see it all summer!

Hi Mary, count me in as a daylily fanatic. I can’t get enough of them. Having experienced Hugo in Charlotte, which was supposed to be a nonevent, I am very nervous for friends and family in both North and South Carolina. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Mary, I just love daylillies and plan to add more to my garden this fall. My husband has started on a new brick walkway through the garden for me. My plan is to plant abundant daylillies on both sides in the sunniest areas. I am partial to Stella de Oro and the old fashion orange daylilllies which grow along the roadsides here. The flags hanging on the lampposts in our small little business district have daylillies on them. The town is even considering adopting the daylily as the Town flower. I love your blog and have been following you for years while taking care of my husband who passed away from Alzheimer’s disease. Your posts have brightened many sad days for me. I LOVE Daylilies…and so do the deer in my neighborhood….however, we plan to have a fence in the new house so I just may be able to finally grow and enjoy them…I so love it when I see the massive amounts of dailies along the highways of NC…a most spectacular vision of beauty…a most generous giveaway and love, love the gorgeous images of the daylilies! I love all your posts but am always fond of your garden pictures. We just recently moved to a new home and daylilies are planted in the flower beds around the pool. I was so pleased to see them start blooming just recently. The weather has been soooooo warm I was afraid they wouldn’t survive but they are blooming away. My favorite daylily is the pink chorus line.
We love the burgundy short lilies, not sure of the name. They match the colors of our exterior doors. But, I must have 7-8 varieties here. Stay safe….through the hurricane. I was thinking of you—when I saw the map, Sandi.

I love daylillies, had some growing in the garden when I moved to this house. Unfortunately several years ago, I had an infestation of tiny red bugs that ate the plants and all plants had to be pulled. I’ve wanted to plant day lillies but on occasion I see one of those bugs and fear the plants would be decimated again.

My favorite lily is called “Stargazer” I have one lily in our garden, it is so wonderfully fragrant. My favorite color is a deep red or a deeper mauve…
