Brown transferware sings the softer notes of fall, paired with white pumpkins and hydrangeas.
I love ironstone and brown transferware any time of year, but fall is the season when it really shines.
I pulled out some pieces to give the transferware its due for a seasonal table vignette in the Potting Shed.
Harvest Time by Johnson Brothers was my grandmother’s everyday pattern and I have her remaining pieces, including this gravy boat, ideal for fall and ‘harvest time’ nesting.
Limelight hydrangeas have made their fall metamorphosis, changing from white to green, now burnished from days of summer heat.
Faded beauty to pair with brown edges of transferware.
My love of brown transferware is tied to memories of my grandmother and I think of it as the dish equivalent of comfort food . . warm and homey. Pieces were picked up at antique malls and consignment stores over the years. I didn’t make a conscious decision to collect, it just sort of happened. . .a piece, pitcher or plate at a time.

Autumn’s Delight by Johnson Brothers with its multi-colored fruit pattern is evocative of harvest season.

A Johnson Brothers Windsor Ware Dover teapot is a favorite for serving up blooms . . .
Or pouring a cuppa Johnson Brothers Staffordshire Bouquet.
Floral details on the teapot lid are too pretty not to serve up on a plate!

I really love seeing this, as you know why! I keep picking up transferware in blues and reds, especially. I am charmed by those with boats and ships on them or patriotic themes. My husband likes them, too.

This was a fabulous little post that I opened before reading the newspaper. Sadly, I got rid of my brown transferware, but it did not have the personality of yours. Reading this, I pretended to poke around an English antique shop, a person can daydream, right? This would be beautiful even without the blooms. And the odds and ends are sweet. I have wondered what to do with an unmatched cup or two. My personal fav was the gravy boat, why do they look so sweet, they are all a bit different. One more time you inspire me to set my table for just a regular dinner. . . .my husband does not question it anymore. Maybe I will even pull out a gravy boat and adorn it……you are spreading the gravy love. Have a good morning.

Good Morning Mary, I just love your assortment of brown transferware. I had some odds and ends of Johnson Brothers years ago, enough for a service for six. Unfortunately I let it slip through my hands and now seriously regret it. Yours is so lovely and has sent me to Replacements website in an effort to replace it. i always washed it by hand and wondered how you cared for yours when you serve on it. We are also looking forward to Fall arriving although today is going to be 89 and are wondering if it will ever cool down.
Such warm and cozy colors. What a delight it must be to have those huge limelight hydrangeas with so many gorgeous blooms to use for your fall decorating! I had a few on my hydrangeas, but getting them to grow well here is a challenge. Hope you have cooler days soon!
What a lovely collection and it all started with grandma’s! I am sure she would be pleased and proud that you have so lovingly taken care of it and continue to add to the collection. They all do speak of Fall and all her glory. My favorite pieces are the Johnson Brothers Staffordshire Bouquet with the colors of Fall, the yellow, soft burgundy and light blue. I also like the swirled edging on the plates, very pretty. The stamping on the back of the plates is awesome, especially the lovely hallmark on Charlotte! Memories…they get us every time. Just completed my annual canning of tomatoes, minus my sweet mom. Still miss her so, even after 2 years. She would have LOVED these tomatoes as they were big, firm and beautiful with no blemishes. What is prettier than a table laden with sparkling canning jars filled with Fall’s bounty? Hello Fall, we are glad you are here. 🍂

Looks straight out of Better Homes and Gardens. Beautiful in every way! My husband bought me a set of Johnson Brothers Friendly Village dinnerware a couple years ago. I’m so looking forward to getting them out again soon. The Autumn Delight set is lovely!

The brown transferware is exquisite! And your vignettes are lovely. I have a collection of amber depression glass dishes which is what I associate with the many meals eaten at my own grandmother’s table. It’s not quite as elegant as the transferware but brings back fond memories for me.
I am trying to collect the Johnson Bros. pink transferware in the series “Old England Castles”. I have several salad plates which I plan to hang together on one of my dining room walls. My goal is to have all of them be the vintage ones with the crown on the back. I don’t know how many different castles were depicted but quite a few I think. I only have two or three different ones so far.
