Monday Morning Blooms: Winter Nesting Flower Arrangement and Tablescape

Create a ‘Winter Nesting’ Centerpiece for your table or home. This nesting-vase method is a decorative and easy way to hide your floral stems when using a glass vase for a flower arrangement. Customize your arrangement with the ‘filler’ or decorative material of your choice to match your decor or tablesetting.

Welcome to Monday Morning Blooms, the first and third Mondays of the month. I’m happy to be joining my blogging friends for some flower therapy and to send some blooming inspiration your way!

You’ll find my blogging friends’ links to their blooming creations at the bottom of this post.

If you follow my blog, you know that we’re enjoying the glow and twinkle of the lights from our Winter Nesting Tree.  It’s a cheery way to transition from Christmas to winter and brighten the house during the cold, gray months of January and February. Our winter tree is decorated with snowflakes, icy branches, glittery nests, pine cones and bird ornaments, you can see it HERE.

Our common theme for this edition of Monday Morning Blooms, was using a glass vase for a flower arrangement. My favorite way to use a glass vase when arranging flowers is with a ‘nesting vase’.

dsc_6960.1

To use this method, start with two vases, a smaller one to nest inside a larger one (round vases work too, they don’t have to be square). Fill the walls between your vases with your decorative material, which will conceal the flower stems. Add water and floral preservative to the inner vase, and then fill with your flowers.  If you don’t have any floral preservative, you can make your own with this easy formula.

For my ‘Winter Nesting’ themed flower arrangement, I filled the walls of my vases with birdseed. The birds will enjoy the birdseed in our feeders after the flowers are spent! Use the material of your choice to fill your vase walls to coordinate with your theme or holiday. I’ve used hosta leaves, lemon slices and different types of candy for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, EasterHalloween and Christmas, in a glass vase using this method.

I added a row of pine cones along the top of the vase for some additional filler and texture. Alstroemeria, frilly mums, and one large hydrangea add some snowy white blooms for a ‘Winter Nesting’ arrangement.

Pine cones, twigs, a nest and bird ornament provide some texture and ‘nesting’ details for a finishing touch the arrangement.

Use florist wire or hot glue to attach a floral pick to your pine cones and bird nest to add them to your arrangement.

I used the same ‘nesting vase’ method for a smaller vase. Since the vase opening was so narrow between the wall of the vases, I placed a plastic grocery bag inside the inner vase, to keep it seed-free while filling the vase.

Twigs placed in the vase among hyacinth blooms give a clip-on bird ornament a place to perch!

A winter-woodland tablecloth, provides a foundation for a winter nesting table, with pine cones, branches and scattered snowflakes.

Snow bird salad plates are layered on embossed white plates. . .

Twig flatware, pine cone napkins and napkin rings add some woodland table details.

Mercury glass votives provide some sparkle and shine on dreary winter day. Larger votives are filled with birdseed for some added nesting details.

And more birds flew down from the tree to nest at the table.

Mary, Your creativity when it comes to flower arranging and tables never ceases to amaze me! Thank you for the easy to follow tutorial. I pinned your Valentine’s Day flower arrangement last year using the method and was going to try to find vases for it this year. Hope you’re staying warm and cozy in your nest. It’s a 14 degrees here this morning…brrrr!

Oh, Mary, that overview photo is such a pretty sight to see! It’s so perfect for this season (but a lot prettier than what I see when I’m outside!). You not only have a beautiful arrangement, but the entire room with the tree and tabletop. Your floral arrangement is gorgeous. Lucky birds!

Thank you for being so generous with your creative ideas, Mary. You always manage to have a surprise or two up your sleeve, and in this case, it’s the filler bird seed…love that idea! What a gorgeous table. I know you enjoy creating new scenes, but don’t you hate taking down those lovely creations to put up another? Probably not, as each one you do gives you such joy…just keep on creating for us…stay warm…

Quiet confession. Your tables are so INSPIRING that I have often followed your instructions and proudly displayed them on my dining room table. And when friends come over….well….sorry, but with the exception of one friend, i don’t give you credit. I let them think I’m just that good. So I’ve now confessed. Forgive me?

Just when I think that you’ve outdone yourself for the last time, you post one of these tablescapes even more amazing than the last. I LOVE birds too, and this is SO adorable, but not too cutesy. I love the vase-within-a-vase idea. I need to start looking for some pairs of glass vases. I always appreciate your sourcing information. I’m going to get some of those Mikasa French Countryside goblets one of these days. They are so versatile!

i know this question has been asked before, but just wondering if you still may have a label on your table cloth with the makers name? Such a beautiful piece!
    Your decor is soooo inspiring!

Thank you, Doreen. Unfortunately no manufacturer’s tag on the tablecloth, only ‘made in China’ and laundering directions.
